JMIR--Crowdsourced Health Research Studies: An Important Emerging Complement to Clinica... - 0 views

  •
Results: Participatory health is a growing area with individuals using health social networks, crowdsourced studies, smartphone health applications, and personal health records to achieve positive outcomes for a variety of health conditions. PatientsLikeMe and 23andMe are the leading operators of researcher-organized, crowdsourced health research studies. These operators have published findings in the areas of disease research, drug response, user experience in crowdsourced studies, and genetic association. Quantified Self, Genomera, and DIYgenomics are communities of participant-organized health research studies where individuals conduct self-experimentation and group studies. Crowdsourced health research studies have a diversity of intended outcomes and levels of scientific rigor.s

Study on Impact Of Journal Data Policies - 0 views

  •
Policies that request and require investigators to share research data are becoming more common. This research study, The impact of public data archiving policies on attitudes, experiences, and practices of authors, explores the impact of journal policies on the experiences, attitudes, and practices of active scientists.

BOINC - 0 views

  •
BOINC harnesses the idle time of participants' computers for a massive, crowdsourced version of distributed computing. This computing power is then marshaled for and made available for virtuous scientific necessities including global warming research, planet discovery, extraterrestrial study, and more. The entities and projects utilizing the BOINC platform to crowdsource their research include SETI, FightAIDS@home, the Collatz Conjecture project and more.

Use the idle time on your computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) to cure diseases, study global warming, discover pulsars, and do many other types of scientific research. It's safe, secure, and easy: Or, if you run several projects, try an account manager such as GridRepublic or BAM!.

The biological impact of mass-spectrometry-based prot... [Nature. 2007] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
In the past decade, there have been remarkable advances in proteomic technologies. Mass spectrometry has emerged as the preferred method for in-depth characterization of the protein components of biological systems. Using mass spectrometry, key insights into the composition, regulation and function of molecular complexes and pathways have been gained. From these studies, it is clear that mass-spectrometry-based proteomics is now a powerful 'hypothesis-generating engine' that, when combined with complementary molecular, cellular and pharmacological techniques, provides a framework for translating large data sets into an understanding of complex biological processes.

Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study - National Institute of General Medical Sciences - 0 views

  •
Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) is a collaboration of research and informatics groups to develop computational models of the interactions between infectious agents and their hosts, disease spread, prediction systems and response strategies. The models will be useful to policymakers, public health workers and other researchers who want to better understand and respond to emerging infectious diseases. If a disease outbreak occurs, the MIDAS network may be called upon to develop specific models to aid public officials in their decision-making processes. More information about MIDAS is available at the links below.

Case Study: Re-Engineering an Institutional Repository to Engage Users - 0 views

  •
When institutional repositories were introduced, many libraries embraced them as a means to support and further the cause of open access and the dissemination of scholarly communication. As has been widely reported, however, faculty did not embrace the concept, and repositories generally have not filled up as envisioned.

PsychFileDrawer.org - An Archive of Brief Reports of Replication Attempts in Experiment... - 0 views

  •
Now Open for Beta Testing The website is designed to make it quick and convenient to upload reports but also to require enough detail to make the report credible and responsible. The site also provides a discussion forum for each posting, allowing users to discuss the report (potentially allowing collective brainstorming about possible moderator variables, defects in the original study or in the non-replication attempt, etc.)

The Human Connectome Project - 0 views

  •
The NIH Human Connectome Project is an ambitious effort to map the neural pathways that underlie human brain function. The overarching purpose of the Project is to acquire and share data about the structural and functional connectivity of the human brain. It will greatly advance the capabilities for imaging and analyzing brain connections, resulting in improved sensitivity, resolution, and utility, thereby accelerating progress in the emerging field of human connectomics. Altogether, the Human Connectome Project will lead to major advances in our understanding of what makes us uniquely human and will set the stage for future studies of abnormal brain circuits in many neurological and psychiatric disorders.

Freeing the Dark Data of Failed Scientific Experiments - 1 views

  •
In 1981, the New England Journal of Medicine published a Harvard study that showed an unexpected link between drinking coffee and pancreatic cancer. As it happened, researchers were anticipating a connection between alcohol or tobacco and cancer. But according to the survey of several hundred patients, booze and cigarettes didn't seem to increase your risk.
