Renewable energy now forms one-third of the world's total energy capacity, according to a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The agency found that 171GW of renewable energy was added to the global system in 2018, with an annual increase of 7.9%. Two-thirds of new power generation capacity added in 2018 came from renewables.

The Carbon Trust believes that offshore wind power has the potential to supply 25% of the UK's electricity by 2020. Hydropower is an incredibly old source of energy, tracing its usage back to the watermills that have been a staple of civilisations since ancient times.
