      The drugs listed in this chapter are all used for this purpose. Some of them do work, but any drug that is effective is (1) probably dangerous to the user and (2) illegal in most competitive environments.

  • An athlete may suffer physical or psychological harm because of his drug use. Drug use contaminates sports because the results are obtained by unnatural means. An athlete who uses drugs has an unfair advantage over one who does not. The use of anabolic steroids is cheating and violates the rules of virtually every sport. The use of steroids for nonmedical purposes is a violation of state and federal laws. The use of drugs by one athlete may coerce or force another to use them to maintain equality. High school students and younger individuals are using these drugs.

They have been able to do this, in part, because a wealth of scientific data exists that correlates habits and health risks.
