hacking education conference - 0 views

  • I can appreciate the desire to rid ourselves of bureaucracy, but I wouldn't be so sure that effective learning can simply happen from the bottom up
  • The basic problem is that as a student you don't know what you need to know.

50 Questions - 0 views

  •
"Our teachers were asked to view this video prior to our 15-minute Friday staff meeting on March 6. They were then asked to create a question that was inspired by the video that "no one else will ask". The result was 50, wide-ranging questions that are captured in this Wordle." This would be interesting an interesting activity anywhere - college classroom, faculty meeting, professional development. Create a shared google document (spreadsheet). Ask participants to enter their questions on the spreadsheet. Copy/paste it into wordle and voila...in 2 minutes you have a visual representation of the groups thinking. Try it with kids sometime, too.

At this point in their proliferation, much remains unknown concerning the educational and learning impacts of NDM: Will they be large or small, will the outcomes be positive, negative, mixed, or neutral? It is still too early to tell. That having been said, we believe that a "perfect storm" of NDM affordances, sociocultural changes associated with globalization, and the growing pace and interconnectedness of human life may potentially add up to a formidable tipping point. We operate on the assumption that NDM contain affordances that, if leveraged properly, could create future learning environments and cultures in which the promises of constructivist, social, situated, and informal learning are realized.

Moreover, those who took notes during the podcast scored even higher, averaging 15 points higher than their live-lecture counterparts.

Not exactly the best pedagogical practice, but the idea of lectures being done differently is pretty significant.

It's not often that a professor tells her students to skip class. But that's what SUNY Fredonia Psychology professor Dani McKinney did to support a recent study - and its results have thrust her into the national spotlight, with stories appearing in media ranging from the "New York Times" to "New Scientist" magazine.
