Arizona literacy law kicks in next year - 0 views

  •
An interesting article on a new law to take effect in Arizona in which students who do not meet reading goals by third grade will be retained (exceptions are made for students with special needs and ELLs). There are lots of implications here for RTI, Common Core, and "standards-based" instruction.

Alternative to corkboards. You add notes and this site offers great lesson ideas like writing something you learned in a story, write as many adjectives as you can, write a question for discussions, and it can be used in many subjects. Students can personalize and it is very safe and easy to use.

Cyberbullying | StopBullying.gov - 0 views

  •
Website that give educators for recognizing cyberbullying, how to react/what action steps to take, and how to bring cyberbullying into lesson within the classroom.
  •
I like that this website has step by step suggestions for preventing bullying, including assessing how often the bullying is occurring. Although there may be some students who would not be truthful about bullying on a survey, hopefully there would be some students who would provide valuable information to help you determine what underlying things are going on in your classroom that you might not notice while teaching. I know many of us like our students to think we have eyes in the back of our head, but the reality is we may need our own students to help us see the bigger picture of what is going on in school.

Awesome website Becky! I had to write a paper on cyber bullying a few semesters ago. I wish I had known about this website. It has such a simplified breakdown! It's very easy to follow. Thanks for sharing!

Safe Cyberspace Surfing - 0 views

This article from the KidsHealth website describes some simple rules for staying safe online, as well as the reasoning behind these rules. It is essential that students learn certain rules for online safety, and understand why they must follow these rules. I also appreciate that all of the KidsHealth webpages feature an option to listen to the article as it is read aloud by an automated voice, which makes these articles accessible to young or striving readers. As the voice reads the article, the text is highlighted so students can follow along.
  •
Great resource for laying down some simple rules for students in how to stay safe online. I really like the fact that you can listen to the article as the words are highlighted. Even better, I see there is a button to read and/or listen to it in Spanish. With increasing numbers of ELLs in classrooms, many of whom speak Spanish, that is a great option to make sure cyber safety information is available to all students.

EdTechTeacher | Professional Development for Creating 21st Century Student-Centered Lea... - 0 views

Although professional development for technology is important for teachers and staff, many schools may not have the funds to provide such opportunities. This places the burden on the teachers to become up to date in using technology for their instruction. This website provides resources for presentations, workshops, online courses, and webinars for teachers to help them use technology in their classrooms!

Wallace & Gromit's World of Cracking Ideas - Intellectual Property - 1 views

  •
Wallace and Gromit are British stop motion animation characters with many movies to their names. These fun characters appear in free resources for teachers about teaching intellectual property rights to kids. Packs come for 3 age groups: 4-7 years, 8-11 years, and 12-16 years. Curriculum links are also provided.
  •
I absolutely LOVE Wallace and Gromit - and my 2 little nephews share the same love for them. Seems like a great/cute FREE resource to pull into the classroom. The curriculum links are intersting to take a look at since they mark the standards for Ireland, Wales and Scotland as well as cross curricular links. Seems like a resource that would be great for learners who have a great imagination and creativity, possibly as a little extra assignment or challenge for some students.
  •
I adore Wallace and Gromit too! My dad is Irish, so I was certainly raised watching them. What is also great is that Wallace and Gromit have many fun short movies (even just 10 minutes in length). You could show one in class as a fun activity, and then build a bridge into some actual class content with the free tools on this site!

I was introduced to this tool in clinic and i checked it out! This is a great site that allows anyone to create an avator. By creating an avator, you can give it a voice and customize it any way you'd like. I think this would be great to use to teach lessons that students can listen to on the computer or even spelling words. Students can interpret their opions of stories (incase they dont want to voice their opinion in public). Avatars and voices can be shared and published. There are many possiblities with this web 2.0 tool and i think it would be especially great for students with disabilities.
  •
This is such a great tool! I created and used a voki character for a web quest for my clinic students. I had the voki character introduce them to their "assignment" as a reporter as if it was a video message on their phone. Much more engaging than just reading directions!

NetSmartz Lesson Builder - 0 views

Use this lesson builder to help you create lessons to deal with cybersafety. Choose from a resource library or view sample lessons that tackle topics such as sexting, cyberbullying, meeting online, identity theft, and social networking. This could be a great resource to help teachers feel more willing to cover these issues in their classrooms.
