This page from the AOTA website contains links to various topics associated with the aging adult. These are tip sheets that explain different conditions and how OT can help. These include aging in place, living with Alzheimer's, fall prevention, hip replacement, home modification, low vision, driving and stroke. In addition to the tip sheets, there are links to videos for aging in place, home modification and precautions the elderly can take to prevent falls in the home. This is a great place to look to obtain a lot of good information on a variety of problems the elderly can face and how occupational therapy can help this population.

I love this website. It should be titled "Restrictions Made Easy." The Occupational Therapy Department at the University of Washington Medical Center has created this website to provide handouts for multiple conditions to include sternal precautions, ADLs following surgery of the abdomen, self-care after breast reconstruction, etc. This website will make it easy to accurately advise and treat our patients.

This web site offers courses for thermal and electrical modalities that are used in OT. IT is a live online course. It covers treatment and safety precautions. I would love to take this course, but the price is $599.00!! I wonder if there are facilities that will pay for or pay for half of the course for their OT employee.

This article explains what musculoskeletal disorders are, the different types, how it's diagnosed, how to treat, and most importantly how to prevent. The prevention precautions in this article are very simple things we can keep in mind every day.

This is a slide presentation by AgrAbility which does a little bit of teaching about ergonomics and also shows lots of examples of adapted garden tools. I don't garden, but I found this presentation interesting because a lot of older people I know garden, and I enjoy eating their produce! Grips, handle lengths, lightweight materials and the like are described and suggested, either to purchase or make yourself. There's also information about gardening with arthritis and general safety precautions.

This video is helpful for teaching patients how to get out of bed after a THR! Unfortunately, it was not mentioned if it was a posterior or anterior THR, but the precautions (no hip bending past 90 degrees) made it fairly clear that this video was made for patients with posterior THR.

Standard Precautions represent the minimum infection prevention measures that apply to all patient care. These evidence-based practices are designed to both protect healthcare personnel and prevent the spread of infections among patients. Ambulatory care facilities need to develop specific strategies to control the spread of transmissible diseases specific to their setting. This includes early detection and management of potentially infectious patients.
