"There is a need for safe medications that can effectively support recovery by treating symptoms of protracted abstinence in alcoholics that may precipitate relapse e.g., craving and disturbances in sleep and mood. This proof-of-concept study reports on the effectiveness of gabapentin 1200 mg for attenuating these symptoms in a non treatment-seeking sample of cue-reactive, alcohol-dependent individuals. Subjects were 33 paid volunteers with current DSM-IV alcohol dependence and a strength of craving rating 1σ or greater for alcohol than water cues. Subjects were randomly assigned to gabapentin or placebo for 1-week and then participated in a within-subjects trial where each was exposed to standardized sets of pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant visual stimuli followed by alcohol or water cues. We found a significant attenuating effect of gabapentin (vs. placebo) on several measures of subjective craving for alcohol as well as for affectively-evoked craving. Gabapentin was also found to significantly improve several measures of sleep quality. Side effects were minimal, and gabapentin effects were not found to resemble any major classes of abused drugs. Results suggest that gabapentin may be effective for treating the protracted abstinence phase in alcohol dependence and, hence, that a randomized clinical trial would be an appropriate next step. The study also suggests the value of cue reactivity studies as proof-of-concept screens for potential anti relapse drugs."

Gabapentin reduces alcohol consumption and craving, which may help patients to maintain abstinence. These results, together with the virtual absence of side effects and a favorable safety profile, support gabapentin as a potential drug for the treatment of alcohol withdrawal and dependence.

Preventieve zorg en aandacht voor alcohol worden wel belangrijker gevonden dan tien jaar geleden. Er zijn verschillende manieren om alcoholproblemen te behandelen. Het is belangrijk om in een vroeg stadium het drankprobleem te herkennen. de eigen motivatie om het gebruik te veranderen is een belangrijke voorwaarde voor verbetering van je probleem. Er zijn een aantal verslavingsinstellingen die hulp aan bieden. Een behandeling kan ambulant of klinisch plaatsvinden.

Effect van alcoholmisbruik op bloed en bloedvormende organen

AMSTERDAM - Behandelingen tegen huiselijk geweld hebben nauwelijks effect: geweldplegers vallen bijna altijd terug in hun oude gedrag. Dat komt doordat bij minstens de helft van de daders nog een tweede probleem speelt: alcohol- en/of drugsverslaving. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van de UvA.

Duidelijk dat er nog heel veel is wat we niet weten. Zit wat mij betreft in dezelfde hoek als de experimenten die gebaseerd zijn op extinctie door herhaalde exposure. Werk ook niet altijd en ook niet bij iedereen. Vraagje: hoe kun je het beste naar Parijs reizen. Per vliegtuig, trein of auto ?

Ja maar mensen die goede ervaringen hebben met de trein zullen je altijd vertellen dat de trein het beste vervoermiddel is om naar Parijs te komen. Tot er op een dag stakingen of storingen op het spoor zijn. Maar........ When ik kills you you'd better be safe than sorry. And when it doesn't keep asking 'what if' and investigate ! Mijn ervaring is dat clienten vaak 'what if'' denken en doen (en meestal onderuit gaan) en wij roepen "better safe than sorry'. Misschien is het een proces..... wij roepen vaker 'what if' en clienten zeggen in reactie steeds vaker 'better safe than sorry'. Maar dat veronderstelt een brein dat bereid is om in vrijheid te leren zonder daarbij gegijzeld te zijn door alcohol of middelen. Leuke discussie voor de visie...

Het denken staat nooit stil gelukkig. Als we maar niet experimenteel overschatten. Ik vrees dat het niet uit te leggen valt hoe ingrijpend-behalve fysiek- vooral ook mentaal een relapse werk. Het wordt nl steeds erger en verslaving is een dodelijke ziekte.
