A self-induced problem dubbed Tight Pants Syndrome can produce frequent belching heartburn and abdominal discomfort.  Reporting in the Archives of Internal Medicine Dr. Octavio Bessa of Stamford Conn. says he often treats middle-aged men who complain of vague abdominal discomfort distention and even skipped heartbeats.  He easily diagnoses those suffering from Tight Pants Syndrome because there is usually a discrepancy of three inches or more between the patient's trousers size and their abdominal girth.    Geriatrics  march 21 - A drug undergoing clinical tests may help people grow old without the aches and pains associated with aging.  Isolated 30 years ago by French scientist Dr. Emile-Etienne Baulieu the molecule called dehydroepiandroesterone (DHEA) is said to produce a general feeling of well-being in patients who took small doses over six months.  The subjects said they slept better had more energy and were better able to handle stress says Dr. Samuel Yen of the University of California San Diego. There were no severe side effects.  While they are not sure how DHEA works scientists say the molecule which is secreted by the adrenal glands first appears around age seven peaks around 25 and then begins to decline.  More testing is needed before the substance can be manufactured for general use.

Infertility  april - A recent survey has found a possible link between sports injuries and male infertility.  The survey of nearly 200 men undergoing infertility evaluation at the University of Wisconsin in Madison found 17% had experienced at least one severe blow to the testes mostly during contact sports such as football wrestling and martial arts or while biking over rough terrain.  Damaged testicular tissue signals the body to produce extra amounts of FSH a hormone responsible for sperm production. However a by-product of this increased hormonal stimulation is estrogen which actually inhibits sperm production says Dr. Wolfram Nolten associate professor of medicine at the university.  To reduce the risk Dr. Nolten recommends male athletes wear a protective plastic cup even when engaging in noncontact sports such as baseball or basketball.  Sexual  april - Men who have to deal with premature ejaculation can be treated with an antidepressant.

Researchers at Cleveland's Center for Marital and Sexual Health have found men who took a daily pill containing 50 mg of clomipramine a drug long used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders increased ejaculation time to nearly seven minutes from an average of 80 seconds.  The delay increased sexual satisfaction for men and women says Dr. Stanley Althof (PhD) co-director of the centre.    Pharmacology  april - Adults taking children's medicine may risk undesirable side effects.  While an over-the-counter product like cough medicine poses no harm an adult may fail to get adequate relief from taking too little or suffer side effects from taking too much in the absence of clearly marked adult dosages.  With prescription drugs such as certain antibiotics an adult may actually need less than a child since adults metabolize medications differently than children do says Dr. Stephanie Phelps associate professor of clinical pharmacy at the University of Tennessee.  Surgery  march 21 - A new surgical procedure gives quick relief to sufferers of heel spurs which develop when a ligament pulls away from the bone and aggravates the nerves around the heel.  Traditional treatment involves a large incision that can result in possible tissue damage and a lengthy recovery period. With the new procedure the surgeon makes only two small incisions in the skin then makes a tiny cut in the ligament which helps it to lengthen and stop tugging at the nerves.  Dr. Dale Rosenblum attending physician at Western Medical Center Anaheim in California says the surgery takes only 45 minutes and allows patients pain-free mobility in about two weeks.    Breast cancer  march 21 - A new study has shown women who participate in a moderate exercise program during their reproductive years can reduce their breast cancer risk by 60%.

Even one to three hours of physical exercise per week reduces a woman's breast cancer risk by up to 30% says Dr. Leslie Bernstein professor of preventive medicine at the University of Southern California school of medicine.  The study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute did not determine why exercise reduces cancer risk in women under 40. But researchers believe physical activity affects the production of ovarian hormones which are thought to play an important role in breast cancer development.  Prenatal  april - Prenatal tests can be helpful in spotting birth defects but there are drawbacks.  Tests like amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) are usually fairly accurate in detecting birth defects but both procedures increase the risk of a miscarriage.  According to Dr. Patrick Mohide professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University in Hamilton maternal serum screening which measures the levels of certain hormones in the blood can be safely given to all pregnant women. However more than 50% of the tests produce false negatives or positives.  Pregnant women should be tested for group B streptococcus a bacterial infection found in the vagina or lower intestinal tract of an estimated 15% to 35% of women. Antibiotic treatment during labor can lower the potentially fatal infection risk to babies says Dr. Fay Weisberg an OB/GYN at Women's College Hospital in Toronto.

Asthma  april - "Steroid phobia" may be one reason inhaled corticosteroids to control asthma are underused.  Many doctors and patients fear inhaled steroids cause the same side effects as oral steroids do says Dr. Sonia Buist head of the pulmonary and critical care division at the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.  But for most people the tiny amount of steroids in the inhaled form produce no side effects Dr. Buist says.  She believes they should be the first line of treatment for anyone with moderate-to-severe asthma.
