In this project we want to analyze and test the idea of incorporating a network of robots (robots, intelligent sensors, devices and communications) in order to improve life quality in urban areas. The URUS project is focused in designing a network of robots that in a cooperative way interact with human beings and the environment for tasks of assistance, transportation of goods, and surveillance in urban areas. Specifically, our objective is to design and develop a cognitive network robot architecture that integrates cooperating urban robots, intelligent sensors, intelligent devices and communications.

This video from PAL Robotics shows the teleoperation system of its REEM robot. Equipped with a Kinect sensor as a motion capture device, a laptop captures the gestures and movements of a person and feeds the result to the robot as commands. This process is called motion retargeting and the teleoperation system was developed by Marcus Liebhardt as part of his master thesis project. PAL Robotics is a small Spanish company based in Barcelona, part of the PAL Group from Abu Dhabi. It develops humanoid robots since 2004 and its latest version of the REEM line of robots focuses towards commercial applications.

Kanibot is an innovative robot concept that has been designed to work as a surveillance robot with various handy functionalities. This spider like design of the robot features six mechanical legs with the ability to perform all-way movement, giving the robot the opportunity to go on almost any surfaces. The main body features a powerful camera to capture photos and videos, motion sensor to detect suspicious elements and a tiny antenna to send and receive signals and data to the base station. The glossy black and orange color combination has given the robot an appearance of professional military equipment.
