With Science Fiction television and movies being so popular with the younger age bracket, it is of no surprise that such source material became popular fodder for video game productions. Even the first ever video arcade games such as Computer Space, Space War, and the world renowned classic Space Invaders were based on science fiction themes. Since the video game home console debuted in the mid 70s, there have been probably more science fiction video games made than movies and television series from the same genre. There are literally thousands of science fiction video games out there, spread throughout the various consoles. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--I don't want to date myself, but when I was in high school, one of the things I remember was that, among the geeks like myself who hung out in the computer lab, a bit of a culture war was under way.

The 16-bit generation was really the heyday of the 2D fighter.  It was the genre that defined the arcade of the late 80s and early 90s, fueled much of the gaming violence debate through the decade, and holds within its ranks the title that many point to when debating how Nintendo ultimately won the generation's console war over Sega.  And in the United States, we ate it up.  For many of us, dreams of the hits that sucked us into gaming came from our arcades, and ports of those same titles brought us to love our home consoles.

The Sony PlayStation essentially came out of nowhere in the mid 1990's to take on both Nintendo and Sega in the heated console wars.  With some impressive technology and a heavy marketing budget behind them, Sony rallied a number of the best game developers in the industry to create a powerhouse library of games - many of which laid a solid foundation for generations to come.

Sega is a multinational video game software and hardware development company founded in 1940 as Standard games. Sega's biggest marketing push for video games between 1989 and 2001 was to launch an anti-Nintendo campaign to carry the new generation of games with a slogan of "We do what Nintendon't". In 1991 Sega changed their slogan to "Welcome to the next level" and the console war continued. As a result of these campaigns some very popular games became available for players to entertain themselves with. These are ten of the most popular ones that Sega Genesis was involved with.

In 1991, a storm swept over the international arcade scene.  Street Fighter II swept the world, invigorating the arcade scene, determine the future of the ongoing home console war, and bringing a small genre fully into the public eye.  Much like Doom's effect on the First Person Shooter, Street Fighter 2 was followed by a legion of knock offs and clones, some mere travesties, and some with innovative and original ideas that would go on to further define the 2D VS. Fighter genre.
