This TED talk suggests that children can actually just teach themselves if you leave them with computers, which seems to directly contradict a lot of the reading we've done. Perhaps the difference here is the use of mediators and the kids teaching each other?

Six years ago, I had a deal with Lifetime Television to develop my bestselling novel, The Dirty Girls Social Club, as a TV series. It soon became clear that the relationship wasn't going to work, when two executives insisted that my pilot outline "wasn't Latin enough," because it told of middle class, educated American women who happened to be Latina.

There may be work to do on the pipeline, but the pipeline isn't the problem. Women are leaving tech because they're unhappy with the work environment, not because they have lost interest in the work. As cultural issues go, this is an incredibly expensive problem. Like my friend Sandhya, these women are educated, highly trained, and weren't planning to quit. We're losing them anyway. And once we've lost them, we almost never get them back.
