When Solar Becomes Cheaper Than Fossil Fuels | azizonomics - 0 views

  • If the trend continues for another 8-10 years, which seems increasingly likely, solar will be as cheap as coal with the added benefit of zero carbon emissions. If the cost continues to fall over the next 20 years, solar costs will be half that of coal.
  • When applied to electricity prices this predicts that solar generated electricity in the US will descend to a level of 12 cents (7 pence) per kilowatt hour by 2020, possibly even 2015 for the sunniest parts of America.

How Geothermal Energy Works - 0 views

  • The amount with in the earth’s surface contains 50,000 times more energy than all the oil and natural gas resources in the world.
  • To get that heat, water is pumped down an “injection well”. Then it filters through the cracks in the rocks where they are at a high temperature. The water then returns via the “recovery well” under pressure in the form of steam. That steam is captured and is used to drive electric generators.

How Biomass Energy Works | Union of Concerned Scientists - 0 views

  •
In the United States, we already get over 50 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity from biomass, providing nearly 1.5 percent of our nation's total electric sales.

Despite bright potential, solar power struggles to stay 'clean' | Global Ideas | DW.DE ... - 0 views

  • If solar panels are manufactured using electricity from coal-burning plants, they indirectly emit greenhouse gas emissions. That makes them less clean than a panel that’s manufactured using renewable energy.
  • hexafluoride
  •
What's worse, harmful chemicals are increasingly used to manufacture solar cells in certain panels. Previously, one such chemical widely used was sulfurhexafluoride (SF6), a substance 22,800 times more dangerous to the environment than CO2

Biofuels: What happened to biofuels? | The Economist - 0 views

  • Ethanol, for instance, is an alcoholic biofuel easily distilled from sugary or starchy plants. It has been used to power cars since Ford’s Model T and, blended into conventional petrol, constitutes about 10% of the fuel burned by America’s vehicles today.

A brief history of biofuels: from ancient history to today - 0 views

  • Biofuels and bioenergy are as old as civilization itself.  Solid biofuels like wood, dung and charcoal have been used ever since man discovered fire, and are still used today for cooking and heating in many communities in developing countries.

Tribal Energy Program: Environmental Benefits and Impacts - 0 views

  • Hazardous chemicals are used in the manufacture of solar cells, creating environmental considerations in their manufacture and, in some cases, in their eventual disposal. Solar cell manufacturers minimize their use of these chemicals, recycle them when possible, and release a minimum of pollutants to the environment.

Seven Steps to Energy Policy Heaven - Energy Post | Energy Post - 0 views

  • Solar power is different: although it too uses a lot of space, solar panels can be very well integrated into the urban environment, so they have virtually no impact on land use and cause very little visual pollution.

Ethanol: What Is It? - Ethanol - University of Illinois Extension - 0 views

  • Ethanol is a grain alcohol that can be blended with gasoline and used in motor vehicles. Many gasoline stations provide a blended fuel, which typically is 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of renewable tidal power - 0 views

  • trictly, tidal power comes from the mov
  •
Strictly, tidal power comes from the movement of the tides, and wave power comes from the movement of the waves. There are two kinds of tidal power stations: Tidal stream systems, which use turbines turned by the moving water to generate electricity. Very like wind power. Barrage systems. These are like dams built across rivers. After the tide comes in, the gates are closed. When the tide is low enough on the downstream side, the water flows through turbines rather like a hydro-electric dam. Wave power consists of harnessing the movement of the waves. There are various pilot schemes of this at the moment.

Definition of a Solar Cell - History of Solar Cells - 0 views

  • A solar cell is any device that directly converts the energy in light into electrical energy through the process of photovoltaics. The development of solar cell technology begins with the 1839 research of French physicist Antoine-César Becquerel. Becquerel observed the photovoltaic effect while experimenting with a solid electrode in an electrolyte solution when he saw a voltage develope when light fell upon the electrode.

Tides of the Ocean - Windows to the Universe - 0 views

  • Each day the ocean surface rises and falls because of tides. The highest point of the rise is called high tide. The lowest point is called low tide. Most places have two high tides and two low tides each day. Tides happen because of the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun on ocean water. The Moon has a much greater impact on tides than the Sun because it is much closer. The Moon pulls water that is closest to it making a high tide on the side of the Earth closest to the Moon and there is a high tide on the opposite side of the Earth too. Low tides happen in places between the high tides. Because Earth is rotating, the tides change over time. The difference between high tide and low tide is called the tidal range. The tidal range can be as little as a few centimeters to as much as several meters depending on the shape of the ocean floor. In Canada's Bay of Fundy the tidal range is very large – 16 meters.
