What is the sustainability of solar energy? - Yahoo! Answers - 2 views

  • The will burn for billions of years, it won't run out any time soon. This is sustainable because it will not deplete in the near future. The harder question is if the materials that go into a solar cell are sustainable. They use primarily silicon, which is one of the most abundant materials on earth. But they can also use other things, like metals (copper, silver, gold), and some toxic chemicals (arsenic, cadmium) etc. The sustainability of these materials is questionable. These materials are recyclable, and it is thought 99% of a solar cell can be recycled. But the production of them does has some toxic site affects, which means we have to balance the 'clean' energy production of the cells with the bad by products of their manufacturing process.

Generate Your Own Wind Energy - 0 views

  • As with installing your own solar energy, installing wind energy will help to reduce carbon emissions, which damage the environment and will save money.
  • It's only downfall is possibly the visual impact it makes on the landscape: A tall 'small scale' generator could attract wide rebuttal from neighbours, and this is worth considering before embarking on a wind generation project. However, if you live in a remote area, which benefits from exposure to the wind, or have neighbours that are happy for you to go ahead with the project, installing wind power can be an economically viable way to capitalise on natural, renewable resources
  • A wind generator will cost in the region of £3'000 - £15'000, at about £3'000 per kilowatt.

  • You can expect a wind generator to pay for itself in little over five years, and with conventional energy prices soaring, the dividends will increase with time.

Solar Energy - 0 views

  • Today's solar product offerings go way beyond what most people think of when they hear the term 'solar power' or 'solar energy' – typically they imagine solar electric panels on a roof converting sunlight into electricity. While these 'photo voltaic' panels do represent a piece of the solar pie, many more solar-powered products and technologies utilizing the sun's energy now exist. One of the biggest is solar hot water, whether for residential or commercial the use of the sun's heat to warm a potable water supply instead of electricity is a very efficient method and truly cost-effective. Solar HVAC systems, battery-backed off-grid systems, solar farms and more are at the forefront of the solar power world innovations, with more to come. Biofuels | Energy Sources | Chevron - 0 views

  • Biofuels are fuels made from recently living organisms. They can be divided into three categories: First-generation biofuels are made largely from edible sugars and starches. Second-generation biofuels are made from nonedible plant materials. Third-generation biofuels are made from algae and other microbes.

Tidal power - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  • Tidal stream generators (or TSGs) make use of the kinetic energy of moving water to power turbines, in a similar way to wind turbines that use wind to power turbines. Some tidal generators can be built into the structures of existing bridges, involving virtually no aesthetic problems. [edit] Tidal barrage

Biofuel Facts, Biofuel Information - National Geographic - 0 views

  • Biofuels have been around as long as cars have. At the start of the 20th century, Henry Ford planned to fuel his Model Ts with ethanol, and early diesel engines were shown to run on peanut oil.
  •
"On the face of it, biofuels look like a great solution. Cars are a major source of atmospheric carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas that causes global warming. But since plants absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, crops grown for biofuels should suck up about as much carbon dioxide as comes out of the tailpipes of cars that burn these fuels. And unlike underground oil reserves, biofuels are a renewable resource since we can always grow more crops to turn into fuel. Unfortunately, it's not so simple. The process of growing the crops, making fertilizers and pesticides, and processing the plants into fuel consumes a lot of energy. It's so much energy that there is debate about whether ethanol from corn actually provides more energy than is required to grow and process it. Also, because much of the energy used in production comes from coal and natural gas, biofuels don't replace as much oil as they use. For the future, many think a better way of making biofuels will be from grasses and saplings, which contain more cellulose. Cellulose is the tough material that makes up plants' cell walls, and most of the weight of a plant is cellulose. If cellulose can be turned into biofuel, it could be more efficient than current biofuels, and emit less carbon dioxide. "

Solar electricity PV (photovoltaic) panels explained - benefits, costs, savings, earnin... - 1 views

  •
"The benefits of solar electricity Cut your electricity bills: sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced. Get paid for the electricity you generate: the government's Feed-In Tariffs pay you for the electricity you generate, even if you use it. Sell electricity back to the grid: if your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can't use it, you can sell the surplus back to the grid. Cut your carbon footprint: solar electricity is green, renewables energy and doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide] or other pollutants. A typical home solar PV system could save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year - that's more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime. "
