My Library for wind - 0 views

  • One of the most important is that wind power is the least expensive of all other forms of alternative energy.  Wind turbines generate electricity at around 5 cents per kWh (Kilowatt Hour), which is comparable to the new coal and/or oil burning power plants.  The costs are projected to decline even more as technology improves, and this is very important because most of the cost with wind power is in manufacturing.  Once the wind turbines are in place there is little cost to maintain and wind power is free.

Yale Environment 360: Wind Energy Now Cheaper Than Fossil Fuel Power Plants in Australia - 0 views

  • Unsubsidized wind power is now cheaper than electricity produced from new coal- and natural gas-fired power stations in Australia, according to an analysis by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The study said that electricity can be supplied from a new wind farm at a cost of 80 Australian dollars per megawatt hour, compared to 143 Australian dollars from a new coal plant and 116 Australian dollars from a new natural gas plant.

Renewable Energy Sources in the United States - 0 views

  • Flash steam plants are the most common type of geothermal power plants in operation today. They use extremely hot water (above 300 degrees F (149 degrees C)), which is pumped under high pressure to the generation equipment at the surface. The hot Estimated subterranean temperatures at a depth of 6 kilometers.water is vaporized and the vapor in turn drives turbines to generate electricity
  • While geothermal energy use is efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly, it currently meets less than 1% of U.S. power needs.

Wave Power - 1 views

  • Wave power does not cause any greenhouse gases and is a form of renewable energy as we will simply never run out of waves.Even though equipment represents a considerable financial commitment, the fuel is free of charge and never limited by geopolitical borders. Finally, the damage to the natural environment is considered to be minimal and thus it will help stop climate change.

Solar electricity PV (photovoltaic) panels explained - benefits, costs, savings, earnin... - 1 views

  •
"The benefits of solar electricity Cut your electricity bills: sunlight is free, so once you've paid for the initial installation your electricity costs will be reduced. Get paid for the electricity you generate: the government's Feed-In Tariffs pay you for the electricity you generate, even if you use it. Sell electricity back to the grid: if your system is producing more electricity than you need, or when you can't use it, you can sell the surplus back to the grid. Cut your carbon footprint: solar electricity is green, renewables energy and doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide] or other pollutants. A typical home solar PV system could save over a tonne of carbon dioxide per year - that's more than 30 tonnes over its lifetime. "

A Quiet Breakthrough in Geothermal Energy - Businessweek - 1 views

  • Geothermal power has massive potential in many areas of the U.S. but it has long remained a niche technology.

Talks about how much potential there is

"While traditional geothermal can be cheaper than coal power, enhanced geothermal systems are generally more expensive than traditional ones. But being able to create multiple geothermal zones from one well brings down the overall cost of enhanced geothermal by 50 percent, Petty said."

Fuel Cells | Energy Sources | Chevron - 0 views

  • Fuel cells are self-contained power generation devices that are able to produce reliable electricity for residential, commercial, industrial and transportation applications. A fuel cell can convert hydrogen directly into electricity that can be used to power an electric car, for example, or a home.
  • In fuel cells, the use of hydrogen produces fewer greenhouse gases than does burning fossil fuels
  • . Fuel cells convert energy efficiently, which helps conserve energy resources. And a byproduct of this electro-chemical process is pure water—a clear benefit for the environment

  • However, hydrogen—a tasteless, odorless, colorless gas—is not found freely in nature. It must be extracted from other substances.

What is the sustainability of solar energy? - Yahoo! Answers - 2 views

  • The will burn for billions of years, it won't run out any time soon. This is sustainable because it will not deplete in the near future. The harder question is if the materials that go into a solar cell are sustainable. They use primarily silicon, which is one of the most abundant materials on earth. But they can also use other things, like metals (copper, silver, gold), and some toxic chemicals (arsenic, cadmium) etc. The sustainability of these materials is questionable. These materials are recyclable, and it is thought 99% of a solar cell can be recycled. But the production of them does has some toxic site affects, which means we have to balance the 'clean' energy production of the cells with the bad by products of their manufacturing process.

Solar Energy - 0 views

  • Today's solar product offerings go way beyond what most people think of when they hear the term 'solar power' or 'solar energy' – typically they imagine solar electric panels on a roof converting sunlight into electricity. While these 'photo voltaic' panels do represent a piece of the solar pie, many more solar-powered products and technologies utilizing the sun's energy now exist. One of the biggest is solar hot water, whether for residential or commercial the use of the sun's heat to warm a potable water supply instead of electricity is a very efficient method and truly cost-effective. Solar HVAC systems, battery-backed off-grid systems, solar farms and more are at the forefront of the solar power world innovations, with more to come. Photovoltaic Cells create electricity from sunlight - PV cells provide free energy | da... - 0 views

  • When sunlight strikes a solar cell, electrons are knocked loose. They move toward the treated front surface. An electron imbalance is created between the front and the back. When a connector, like a wire, joins the two surfaces a current of electricity occurs between the negative and positive sides
