What is your school's approach to cyber-safety and what methods are you using to educate your students, parents and staff about online safety?

Thanks for posting this one, Shell.

It's a very good question and one that all schools should be asking themselves, and incorporating and promoting along with their anti-bullying policies etc. ACMA has some fantastic, little known resources available that are a great way to start a discussion on cybersafety, all of which are free for teachers, students and parents to access. ACMA presentations are informative for teachers, students and parents alike and arm those who take part in the presentations with valuable information on the topic.

It's very important to be proactive on this front and to educate those involved before an incident occurs so they have the tools/strategies to deal with the issues that will occur.

Perhaps this should be one of the talking points at the next LT network day?

    Sam.

I agree, I think it is definitely something that we as educators need to take some responsibility for... and as you mentioned the ACMA have produced some wonderful resources.

Our school has made internet safety a focus for the last 3 years in a number of ways.....

Firstly our Stage 3 students have participated in ACMA workshops for the last three years, we have also run both staff and parent workshops... again supported by ACMA.

All students K- 6 have also participated in school facilitated cyber-safety workshops and our teachers are currently implementing the modules produced by ACMA.

Our Year 6 students have also participated in the Cybersmart Detective Program .. which again was a great experience.

I would strongly encourage all schools to take advantage of the terrific resources out there and dont wait till you have an issue before you do something about net safety........ Be Proactive!!!!

And yes ... perhaps it is something that we could explore at the next LT network day.

    Hi Guys

You may remember we have addressed this at LT networks a few times in past however if people are interested we can certainly revisit it.

I agree its a really important area and the federal government has created many great resources that they are now making available through ACMA, along with many other great resources from around the world.

While I am sure the ACMA workshops for students are great I believe Cyber Safety is something that needs to be a part of everyday discussion and practice within the classroom, not addressed in one off sessions run by external presenters.

At a minimum I encourage teachers and schools to explore the age appropriate resources, games and activities at http://www.cybersmart.gov.au with their class and use the points raised to promote meaningful discussion.

    Cheers

    Mark
