      You could also do this in conjuncture with another project by first making your own doll (sock doll or similar easy doll) and then turning it into a marionette.

    As you can see, I think you can improve this idea by making it a two-part project and making a doll from a simple pattern and then turning your hand-made puppet into a marionette. This would give you even more control over the final product.
