"What causes day and night? As a class students investigate by role play what causes day and night. Three or four students form a circle to represent Earth. One student has a label 'Australia' facing out and another, opposite, the name of a continent or familiar place on the other side of the world. A larger circle to one side represents the sun shining light in all directions. Alternatively, students stand to one side holding torches that represent light from the sun shining on Earth. The 'Earth' rotates slowly. Observers note what happens when 'Earth' turns into sunlight (daytime) and out of sunlight (night time) and what happens to the other side of the world as Australia moves in and out of the sunlight. The following Digilearn activity provides students with differences and similarities between day and night: Day sky, night sky Where is the sun in the sky? Students draw their house and show the position of the sun at the time they have breakfast. They draw the position of the sun in the sky where it appears at lunch time and again at dinner time. Students link the different positions of the sun on their drawings with a dotted line and they record the time of day beside each marked 'sun'. They develop explanations for their observations (these are likely to include alternative conceptions that do not align with the scientific view)."
