Stonewall riots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 0 views

  •
They are frequently cited as the first instance in American history when people in the homosexual community fought back against a government-sponsored system that persecuted sexual minorities, and they have become the defining event that marked the start of the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. American gays and lesbians in the 1950s and 1960s faced a legal system more anti-homosexual than those of some Warsaw Pact countries.[note 1][2] Early homophile groups in the U.S. sought to prove that gay people could be assimilated into society, and they favored non-confrontational education for homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. The last years of the 1960s, however, were very contentious, as many social movements were active, including the African American Civil Rights Movement, the Counterculture of the 1960s, and antiwar demonstrations. These influences, along with the liberal environment of Greenwich Village, served as catalysts for the Stonewall riots. Very few establishments welcomed openly gay people in the 1950s and 1960s. Those that did were often bars, although bar owners and managers were rarely gay. The Stonewall Inn, at the time, was owned by the Mafia.[3][4] It catered to an assortment of patrons, but it was known to be popular with the poorest and most marginalized people in the gay community: drag queens, representatives of a newly self-aware transgender community, effeminate young men, hustlers, and homeless youth. Police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, but officers quickly lost control of the situation at the Stonewall Inn, and attracted a crowd that was incited to riot. Tensions between New York City police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening, and again several nights later. Within weeks, Village residents quickly organized into activist groups to concentrate efforts on establishing places for gays and lesbians to be open about their sexual orientation without fear o

Gay bar to be built next to Ground Zero mosque (Video) - 3 views

  •
In the name of bridging great divides and of fostering peace and harmony, a proposal has been made to open a gay bar in the commercial space next to Cordoba House.
  •
The grand mosque of Cordoba was built as a monument to the conquest of Spain. By naming this as Project Cordoba are we being told that this mosque is to be the monument to the impending conquest of America? In the name of building bridges and tolerance, should a Knights Templar monastery be built across the street from this mosque?

Prop 8 - Black v Queer - critical analysis - 0 views

  • The rhetoric, once again, masks racism through comparative oppressions - the prevailing misrepresentation of how the black vote, and also the Hispanic vote, supported anti-gay policies on the day that black history would be irrevocably altered.
  • Gay is the New Black
  • Offense #1: It presumes that, because we made significant racial progress through the election of Obama, somehow racism has been conquered while homophobia has not been. Obviously, racism hasn't been conquered, or that slogan would have never emerged in the first place.Offense #2: Such a slogan is designed to pit two marginal groups against each other, conveniently ignoring the fact that certain fundamental religious organizations whose congregations are overwhelmingly white were instrumental in enacting Proposition 8 in the first place.

  • Offense #3: Presumed whiteness. The very fact that "Gay is the New Black" can position gayness in opposition to blackness is to completely erase and exclude black gays and lesbians, who include people like James Baldwin and Audre Lorde. "Gay" is supposed to represent whiteness, and, suddenly, as Baldwin wrote, "They require of me a song less to celebrate my captivity than to justify their own."

AMERICAblog Gay: When David Boies destroyed Tony Perkins on 'Face the Nation' - 0 views

"Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council debated Prop. 8 lawyer David Boies this morning on "Face the Nation." Boies didn't let Perkins get away with spewing falsehoods and lies. After Perkins spewed the usual right-wing anti-gay rhetoric, Boies let him have it:"

Don't Ask, Tell: Repeal DADT - 0 views

  •
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has suggested there's no time to debate the end of the military's discrimination against gays against a backdrop of economic crisis, duo-war, and unemployment. That's bunk, yet he's right in one respect - we could save a lot of time by repealing DADT now.

The McCain/Palin Debate Spin: We Won Because She Wasn't a Dithering Idiot - 0 views

  • What Gertrude Stein said about her hometown Oakland could also be said of Sarah Palin. "There is no there, there." Sarah Palin is simply without substance.
  • She even tried to humanize her image, saying that despite her views against same sex marriage she didn't judge people and had a diverse group of friends. However, when moderator Gwen Ifill asked Palin if she was in agreement with Senator Biden, who'd said he was against all forms of discrimination against same sex couples but did not support gay marriage, Palin would only repeat what Biden said about gay marriage. Perhaps because she realized that her key supporters -- the evangelical right wing -- might already be choking on their fried chicken wings because of her attempt to say something pleasant about a group of people they consider an abomination.

The only point of that made any sense to me was her agreement with Biden on civil union - even through she could never say the words.

This is an admission against interest that there will be disruption and damage to morale and readioness.
  • The report noted that even during a Jan. 28 briefing on plans moving forward on the change, one military expert said, "I think if something unforeseen arises, it's important to understand that each of the service chiefs – we'll do an assessment every two weeks.

The Iain Dale interview | LabourList.org | April 2009 - 0 views

  • Boris Johnson, the test case for a Tory government. He’s overturned the tariff on gas-guzzlers; he’s only building social housing in already deprived areas, he praised the sub-prime mortgages in America; he destroyed cycle lane budgets but still called himself green. And those are the very few things he has done…Good. I like politicians who don’t legislate a lot.

  • I don’t regard it as a Socialist Conspiracy, but I do regard it as a monolithic bureaucracy where not enough is spent on direct patient care. To my mind, you could break it up into smaller geographical units, decentralise it more efficiently on a regional basis.

  • I was selected as a candidate by a very conservative constituency – having told them I was gay. If you’d said to me ten years ago that that could happen I’d have laughed. Margot James herself was selected in a marginal seat. I willingly pay tribute to Labour on gay rights

I would love to increase the number of teachers by 20%. I would love to, and to be fair to the Labour government have done a lot on that. But to just say that everything's perfect and we need to spend every pound that we're spending now is just being an ostrich.

Drugs over Marriage: The insanity of voting for the right to marry - 0 views

  •
I think voting on rights is ridiculous to begin with, but when I think of the people who fought for this discrimination - organizations like NOM who are not even IN Maine... it makes my blood boil! What right does the majority have to tell another adult citizens who they can marry.
