The Rich Can Already Call It a Year « SpeakEasy - 0 views

Well, 2011, it's been nice. But I think we've worked enough already. In any case, we've already made enough money. Time to call it a year. This is a ridiculous idea, right? Yet, as the Canadian Financial Post reported at the beginning of the week, "Top CEOs will have earned average workers' full annual pay by 2:30 p.m. today." The "today" in question was Monday, January 3, the first business day of the year. Here's their explanation:

America's not so "free market" leads to capitalistocracy « The Canadian Headl... - 0 views

  •
Politicians and talking heads, of both the mainstream liberal and conservative persuasions, commonly refer to this as "our free market system," or maybe "free enterprise." But Americans haven't had anything even remotely resembling a free market for over 150 years.  (For that matter we didn't have one before, what with Enclosures, the Combination Law, mercantilism, slavery and colonialism.)  Since the mid-19th century, what we've had is massive collusion between big government and big business.

The End of the American Dream - Death of Democracy - YouTube - 0 views

  •
In this interview on Canadian television Chris Hedges basically states that American democracy is dead and that only 'a revolution of the people' can restore the USA to democratic values. Since this is extremely unlikely, America will further degenerate, and end up as a semi-fascist corporate state, probably culminating in a right-wing backlash in the form of Nazi-like purges against Muslims, immigrants and other minority groups. And, of course, there will be more endless wars on defenceless nations to boost the arms industry and divert attention from the internal rot. Maybe the Americans should learn from the Egyptians rather than vice versa!

Democrat president needed to restore U.S. reputation: delegates - 0 views

  • Alegi, 72, said Europeans are appalled by the Republican administration's willingness to set aside conventional civil rights for detainees captured in Iraq or Afghanistan. Ken Sherman, a Hamilton, Ont., resident who was selected as a delegate pledged to Barack Obama, said that when he visits Europe, he uses his Canadian rather than American passport because international anger over U.S. foreign policy. "In the last five years with George Bush, I don't pull out my American passport unless I need it." But Obama's rise has made Sherman, 71, prepared to embrace his American citizenship again. "Something has happened in the past two years that has made me proud to be an American again. People are rising up." Wayne Weightman, a 46-year-old Cambodian lawyer, came to Vancouver to support Barack Obama who, he believes, can revive respect overseas for America.

Mainstream Populist Democrats: Taiwan may provide a health care model for the U.S. - 0 views

  •
A National Public Radio profile from last year points out that Taiwan has one of the world's best health care systems and it is cost efficient too. All Things Considered, April 15, 2008 · At the end of the 20th century, Taiwan became a rich country, almost overnight. But it still had a poor country's health care - about half the population had no coverage at all. So Taiwan set out to design a national health care system from scratch. What makes Taiwan unique is the way the country figured out how to cover everyone.

My first post here. Just joined. Live in Taiwan and can attest to the brilliance of the healthcare system here. It's a much better model than Canda. (And I'm a Canadian.)
