Many PBS shows can be streamed from here. A few examples: NOVA'a Ocean 'Tipping Point', NOVA's 'Extreme Ice', NOW on PBS'a 'On Thin Ice' Wide Angle's 'Burning Season', Nature's 'Under Antarctic Ice,' and many more. Many videos are time 'chunked' making them more amenable for classroom use. Once a video is selected, mouse over the screen to show the full screen and other options.

Wake Up, Freak Out - then Get a Grip (Tipping Point Ahead) - 1 views

  •
This video is far less radical that the name suggests. A little longer than 10 minutes, it provides an excellent, albeit simplified, calm summary of the science. It does not ignore the cyclic nature of climate change yet it does put the human factor in place nicely. Be sure to watch all they way through the credits. The video is downloadable, and has a pdf page of the script with links to quality sites.

This is an older, commercial advocacy site from Australia that has some merit in the links and the videos. Unfortunately, the videos sometimes load, and sometimes don't ; too bad, because they are very good (Recent trials have been more successful on a Mac than a PC). The target for this might be a stewardship or ethics discussion with upper middle or high school students. It's worth a look, even though it is an older site. If you can get your hands on "Sleeping Giants", it is a great basis for a deep discussion with high school and older groups.

"Snowpit studies provide a vital link between the modern atmosphere and the climate history reconstructed from ice cores. This video documents one of the types of measurements made in snowpits and explains how snow sampling informs ice core studies".

Chasing the rays of the sun: Measuring snow albedo - YouTube - 1 views

  •
A Nice video from FRAM - High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment, on a project to measure albedo in Greenland., was spotted by my colleagues at IPF. Brings science in a very informative, clear, well shot and edited way, with good presenters:

CarbonTracker, a project of the U.S. government's National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's Earth System Research Laboratory, has produced a telling time-lapse video chart of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) concentrations starting in January of 1979 and ending in January of 2011. Measurements were taken in dozens of locations around the world (the red ball measures CO2 in Hawaii and the blue dot measures CO2 at the South Pole)

Arctic Stories - 0 views

  •
This site came about as a result of the friendship between three people - Peter Lourie, Paul and Jody Shepson. Their passionate concern about climate change and love for the natural environment, and a grant from the National Science Foundation to Paul, created the opportunity to capture, in the form of "Video Storytelling," the voices of the Arctic, and the scientists who study it.

Painting Climate Change - 0 views

  •
"In a remarkable union of science and art, landscape painter Diane Burko shows how the planet's glaciers have changed form over the last century in her latest exhibit "Politics of Snow." To tell the story, Burko tracked down glaciologists from the US Geological Survey's National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and others. She then painted a series of photos for each mountain based on historic and present day photographs. Her collection demonstrates the changing face of glacial mountains across the world, including the Matterhorn in the Alps and Grinnell Glacier in Montana's Glacier National Park." The Scientist

A remarkable site that has wonderful video podcasts from 'real' polar scientists talking in 'real' language to 'real' people. If the live tour comes near you, it is worth seeing - at the very least read the bios of the people involved. It's another insight to polar studies.
