The homepage has thumbnails that link to various portfolio subjects. I want to be able to access the other portfolio subjects by choosing from the thumbnail bar again, but you have to "go back to portfolio," and then click from a text contents list instead of the thumbnails. The projects are displayed as downloaded .pdfs that open in the same window, you have to use the browser back button. Each screen has too little hierarchy between elements competing for attention.

Redundant two-intro-page sequence The aesthetics of the website are great. I like the two-tone menu buttons (grey/orange) Once looking at a project, you can't sequence back to look at another. You have to start over and click through the various tabs/subtabs. By this time you don't remember which you were last looking at.

Trying the link now, it doesn't work... maybe he didn't pay for November domain But, here's my critique: Home Page Redundancy: The button links in the header lead to the same place as the large title buttons along the left side of the page. On second level: I like the close (X), back () buttons. They read well in a line with the title. The page content is small. It is obvious the layouts were made for a different media prior to the website. Having a third level with enlarged text/images would be helpful for understanding the content. Contact page: Having direct contact from the website is a good idea.

Likes: 1. Uses mouse tracking to navigate horizontally, which is fun and interactive 2. Clean look--fonts work well together (only 2 or 3, which keeps it simple) 3. Client info is clear, and makes it clear what the author of the website does. Dislikes: 1. I don't understand the significance of the numbers at the top of the page (why they're out of order, and why there's only this selection being shown...) 2. The author of the website could use a copy editor.....there are some grammatical and sentence errors. 3. Flash scroller is a bit jumpy after page loads various items....

Likes: -the strongest contrast: black and white background -nice fonts that is easy to catch those words up on the website -he puts pages, archives, categories, and meta, other than menu -the idea of putting a search engine in order to enable viewers to search their interesting thing. Dislikes: -the layout is little bit too simple, could be more dynamic. -it seems that he can use empty space more efficiently.

Likes: -the layout that he puts menu on the left, and has a good quality of image on the right. -clean menu, such as you will see a bunch of his woks when you click "work," rather than putting those directly on menu. -fading out/ in images look sophisticated. Dislikes: -need to think about the contrast; blue on white is little hard for me to recognize those words. -he can definitely use the space on the left more efficiently. -those fonts are too small to get them.

Designing a Digital Portfolio Cynthia Baron - 1 views

  • DT&G   Cynthia, I remember reading and reviewing your Creating a Digital Portfolio back in 1996 -- and at that time it was really a ground-breaking book. Few creatives were thinking about a digital format at that time. A lot has changed since then hasn't it?

  • Site Map Diagrams A visual site map 17 is quick to make, fairly expressive and easy to change. People have all sorts of methods for building site map diagrams. Whatever your tool, the diagram is a useful way to demonstrate hierarchy. It clearly shows the relationships between pages and tells you where your website is too shallow or deep. What’s it for? To visually explain the relationships between pages on your website. What’s good about it? Nothing better illustrates the hierarchy of a website than a diagram with lines and arrows indicating the relationships between pages. Clients naturally understand it. What’s bad about it? The actual relationships between pages can be hard to grasp. What looks good on a chart might not work well on a website. And a site map diagram is not really useful during the development phase, quickly becoming a dead documents. In sum A site map diagram is a quick way to sketch navigation and hierarchy. Don’t try to cram in other bits of information that just don’t fit. + Large thumbnails allow for plenty of information about the project the link will take you to + absence of text unless you rollover an image allows for very visual and uncluttered aesthetic + Site map in upper right allows for easy navigation - Length of page means that not all projects are immediately visible. - Button to navigate back to home after a project could be larger - The fact that links to projects is not included in the main site navigation is not readily apparent

+ Interactive animation are fun and create immediate interest + Bright colors against grey background create visual interest + Logo and name as part of the title create an impression of professionalism - First page is simple and intuitive, however, after this it become cluttered and complicated to navigate - Images are too small due to the confined area - Loading time, although short, is unwelcome - Music playing is low quality and repetitive and can be an annoyance, especially if the person is listening to music on their computer at the moment.

Likes- I like the icons at the side of each page, and the menu bar is a great if you want to return to a project. Dislikes- It looks like she designed this portfolio on a 27 inch Imac. When loading pages I had to scroll side to side to see all the information, and that is clearly a waste of my time. Next please. Her projects look very interesting and compelling, but not enough information is provided in the graphics, or titles. I am assuming she likes to be a bit mysterious. One major problem with her page is her image location. Its locked, and she has at least 10 menu icons per page. That means I have to scroll down to see all her icons and then scroll back up to see the image. Another fantastic waste of my time. I think if she solved just a few issues she would have an amazing portfolio, but due to the lack of thought put into the website design I wonder about her other design abilities. Sorry Kristin. C- on this one.

I like the minimal background and setup. There are only a few categories which keeps the website simple and focused. I like how images of the work is presented but you can choose to look closer by clicking on the thumbnails. I don't like how the about me is a pdf download. I wish I could simply read it on the page itself and then choose to download it if I wish. The slideshow effect is nice but too fast and when I click on the side arrows they move the thumbnails along the bottom and don't change the big image.

3 things I found appealing about this portfolio: I liked the captivating image for the backdrop. It's the first thing that catches your eye, and links an immediate and strong message to the audience.  I liked the simplicity of the text and the drop down menu options.  I liked how the quote on the home page. 3 things I did not find appealing about this portfolio: I thought there could have been a bit more color to the portfolio I wanted to see more testimonials A map to the location of the business would have been helpful

Pros: 1.Does a good job showcasing their work. 2.Clear simple navigation. 3.Different backgrounds on each page, don't compete with one another but rather work nicely with each page. Cons: 1.Hovering over images makes them just enough larger to be very distracting/obnoxious. 2.Unnecessary/obnoxious scroll bar in some pages. 3.Dead links on the front page.
