The coolest collaboration quote I have come across so far:
In the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed.
Charles Darwin
I know it is long but I think this author makes some pretty good points relevant to how to deal with the avalanche. Access over ownership. Appropriatism
"It seems clear that our major market - content hungry, social humans - has made some choices and needs better quality choices from their library."
As a thought: Stephen's Lighthouse is perhaps currently the single most important blog for librarians who want to keep up with the tech/digital curve
Well thought out critique though it pushes some of my buttons:
"Is it good to share content? Yes, of course, but don't confuse it with learning. Open content is nothing more than a glorified digital public library, without the fines for being overdue. A library does not a degree make." Nobody told him that progressive library systems are dropping fines.....:)
signs of the times; accelerated change increased mobility, apps apps apps. Significance for libraries? Make our services available via mobile apps, bring wireless to communities (especially rural communities)
"As well as being good communicators with people and active adopters and exploiters of technological developments, librarians need to have detailed specialist subject knowledge to pass on to library users. Librarians provide training to show people how to search for information and evaluate what they find. These information skills sessions are now expanding to include digital literacies such as how to stay safe online, the use of social media sites and online collaboration tools."
"By definition, content curation is the act of continually identifying, organizing, and sharing the best and most relevant content on a specific topic or issue online. " Discusses tools - very well laid out article
What struck me was ...."is an Unbook, in the sense that it is a "work in progress" in this fast moving area. Consequently, a supporting online site will help keep purchasers up to date with new articles, new resources and new thinking , as well as provide a place to ask questions and discuss topics with other readers."
This absolutely fascinates me: using "alternative" media to get information out there. When you are talking content, new content and up to date information this is the edge, to me.
