A seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a protective outer covering. Formation of the seed is part of the process of reproduction in seed plants. This page describes the types of plant seeds and offers seed germination tips.

There are about 320,000 species of plants, of which about 85% produce seeds. Green plants provide about 80% of the Earth's oxygen; and they are the basis of most of Earth's ecosystems. Plants that produce grain, fruit, and vegetables are the source of many human foods. Plants also have many other uses, as ornaments, building materials, writing materials and, notably, as the source from which many pharmaceuticals are derived. The scientific study of plants is known as botany.
