There are about 320,000 species of plants, of which about 85% produce seeds. Green plants provide about 80% of the Earth's oxygen; and they are the basis of most of Earth's ecosystems. Plants that produce grain, fruit, and vegetables are the source of many human foods. Plants also have many other uses, as ornaments, building materials, writing materials and, notably, as the source from which many pharmaceuticals are derived. The scientific study of plants is known as botany.

The American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) is a 501(c)(3) professional society devoted to advancing plant science research and education. It publishes three world-class journals and organizes conferences, and other educational activities that are key to the advancement of the science.
