a 8 minutos
minutos
The practice of physical therapy can be traced back to about 460 BC
when physicians Hippocrates and Hector used massage therapy and hydrotherapy (water
therapy) to treat their patients. Massage therapy is a
technique of physiotherapy, whereby basic hand movements are used to reduce
stress, relieve pain and stimulate healing
However, it was during the World War I (1917-1918) that physiotherapy was
performed widely as a rehabilitation therapy for people who were injured in the
war. People employed for such rehabilitative work were known as reconstruction
aides and they were trained nurses having background of physical education and
massage therapy.
The earliest documented record of the founding of a professional group for
physical therapy, was the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, in England, in
1894
to provide physiotherapy services to the general public
in 1913, the University of Otago, New Zealand, established the School of
Physiotherapy.
in 1921, Mary McMillan
founded the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association, which was later
changed to the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). She contributed a
lot to the reconstruction aide services and came to be known as "The Mother of
Physical Therapy
Till the 1940s, common physiotherapy practices included massage, exercise and traction. It
was only in the early 1950s that manipulative therapy for the spine and joint pain was introduced
in the British Commonwealth countries
In 1924, the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation was established to fight the polio
epidemic
physiotherapy was practiced only in hospitals.
In 1956, physical therapists, APTA and medical researchers jointly worked and
cooperated on the Salk vaccine (first polio vaccine developed by Dr.Jonas Salk)
trials, which led to the development of a polio vaccine
In 1974, clinical specializations in physical therapy was made possible, with
the foundation of Orthopedic Section by APTA.
With the development of computer and technology in the 1980s, more advancement
was observed in the field of physiotherapy techniques. For example, electrical
stimulators and iontophoresis devices were introduced for practicing
physiotherapy.
If you travel far back in time you will find forms of physiotherapy used
centuries ago. Hippocrates advocated massage and Hector used hydrotherapy (water
therapy) in 460 B.C
The earliest documented origins of actual physical therapy as a professional
group date back to 1894 when nurses in England formed the Chartered Society of
Physiotherapy.2 Other countries soon followed and started
formal training programs, such the School of Physiotherapy at the University of
Otago in New Zealand in 1913.7 In the United States, Physical
Therapy began in 1914 in Portland, Oregon, with Reed College and Walter Reed
Hospital graduating the first physical therapists, then called "reconstruction
aides." These were nurses with a background in physical education needed
to help manage the devastating effects of the First World War
The development of the first true hospitals occurred 1850 and 1900; these
institutions were devoted to and organized for only the sick. It was
during this time of change that the scientific method was introduced into the
field of medicine.8 The early 1900's brought formal
rehabilitation to the hospital setting

In the 1950's, Physical Therapists started to move beyond hospital based
practice. The majority continued to practice in hospitals through the 1960's.
Physical Therapists now practice in a wide variety of settings, including
outpatient orthopedic clinics, public schools, college/universities, geriatric
settings (skilled nursing facilities), rehabilitation centers, hospitals and
medical centers
Specialization for Physical Therapy in the United States occurred in 1974, with
the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA being formed for those Physical Therapists
specializing in Orthopedics. In the same year, the International
Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy (IFOMT) was formed, which has
heralded change and progress in manual therapy world wide ever since.
During this period, the eastern United States were greatly influenced by the
training of Norway's Freddy Kaltenborn
In the 1980's, the explosion of technology and computers led to more technical
advances in rehabilitation
The 1990's brought much attention to manual therapy
In 460 B.C. Hector was using a type of physiotherapy
called hydrotherapy, or water therapy
In 1894, there is the first evidence of a group of nurses in the
history of physiotherapy with a Chartered Society
Within
twenty years, physiotherapy programs
Also in 1921, the Physical Therapy Association was formed by Mary
McMillan
The focus during the 1980s history of physiotherapy was on
technology. New procedures came about that used computers,
ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and other devices. By the
1990s, interest had shifted to manual therapy, with Freddy Kaltenborn
again leading the way
