Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic. The Challenge of Motivation. - 1 views

  •
One of the most difficult tasks a teacher faces is motivating students to learn. While some students have a natural love of learning, others arrive at a class under protest and act as if they're being tortured rather than taught. Teachers must find a way to motivate these challenging students.

What is a kid just isn't motivated to inquiry? Maybe they can read about this and have some thoughts about the nature of motivation. This might be a good addition to the "why inquiry?" tab.

This article is the real deal. This is what my bosses in the engineering world wanted out of me. Will you be hired?

Another good addition to the "why inquiry" tab if we think it's a good idea. I'm going to sleep on it and then think about it some more.

Every once in a while, a student or a parent wants to know about grades in physical science. Here is an interesting take on grades.

If we make that "why inquiry?" tab this might be a good addition
  •
We have an Inquiry Learning tab. I can add a "why inquiry" box in it....thoughts?

A new feed for the explore page.

Dear Michelle, Will you please squeeze this feed into the explore page. I'm not sure where. Do you think it's too crowded? Thanks, Jason
  •
I've added it at the top of the right-hand column. This page is getting a little crowded...is there any info you want to move to another tab, perhaps? Or any feeds or links you want to delete off this page?
  •
Thanks for adding this. I realize that it's getting crowded. Let's leave it for now. I've got a few ideas coming up, and I'd like the explore page to be stocked with news.

Whoa! I haven't read such heady articles in a long time! That news outlet really makes you think. I'm not sure how I'll use it in my class. Definitely I'll keep an eye on it.

10-Year-Old Girl Discovers New Molecule That Could Help Energy Storage - 0 views

  •
For the LibGuide, or do you just want to share with your students directly?
  •
Thanks. I think that I will share this. In fact, I followed a few links and one of the articles connected the girl's education at a Montessori school (inquiry-based) with the discovery. I'm skeptical, and curious, too. Cheers, Jason

High-energy-density physics. - 0 views

  •
(from a database designed for HS students): The article focuses on the interaction among the statistical, electromagnetic, quantum, and relative physics in the behavior of matter at high pressure. It states that the behavior and properties of matter extend with systems recognized from astrophysics and astronomy. It mentions that the high-energy density (HED) organization expands to indefinitely high temperature and energy density such as a distinctive class of laboratory HED systems like quark-gluon plasmas..
  •
It looks like a tough read. I sent it to the quantum mechanics group. Thanks!

EBSCOhost: Elementary particles - 1 views

"-quarks appear to almost always be found in pairs or triplets with other quarks and antiquarks (the resulting particles being classed as hadrons, more than 200 of which have been identified). Two theoretically predicted five-quark particles, called pentaquarks, have been produced in the laboratory. Four- and six-quark particles are also predicted but have not been found."

Calorimetry - 0 views

Brief, but full, with links to other subjects. To be added?
  •
Calorimetry is cool. I'm not sure where to put it because it's actually outside the SC standards for physical science. Let's put it in the "related matter" box on the matter tab. I've also bookmarked the "elementary particles" link that was in there. You'll see it come up.

This was another challenge for your 10%, as well as an attempt to spark curiosity in others.

Free radicals, antioxidants, and soil organic matter recalcitrance - 1 views

  •
Overly complicated title for a straightforward article.
  •
All I see here is the abstract for the article, and I don't feel confident that it will peak the kids interest because of the vocabulary. Few of the 9th graders are willing to wade through difficult words. Sad. I do expect that they would be interested in antioxidants. Anything that we find in that realm would be a good candidate for the reactions box on the matter tab.
  •
To view the whole article, you need to click on where it says "PDF full text" on the left. Will keep an eye out for antioxidant-related material.

Please add this to the box in the matter tab where the dark matter articles are located. This is some tough stuff. I didn't get to read the article all the way through, and I love the more to the explore. I need to check out this database more carefully. Which one are you using?
  •
I believe I got this article from Academic Search Premier. Their articles are notably more challenging, so I thought it might give your "10%" a workout?

Please share this with Sharon and get her advice about if this should be on the prof dev. libguide. I'm not sure how it would fit...I'm less familiar with that guide since I quickly chose my topic.
