The price we pay for not being where news happens can be reckoned not only in less good journalism, but in less good policy. Because, make no mistake, some portion of the information governments call “intelligence” is nothing more than an attentive reading of the news.

I strongly suspect that one reason Susan Rice got it wrong at the outset is that most of us in the press weren’t there.

Slavutych in Northern Ukraine was set up by the Soviet government shortly after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster to accommodate people evacuated from the proximity of the nuclear plant. The city was designed to provide the inhabitants with modern amenities and a comfortable life. First people moved in their new homes in 1988. In 2000, under international pressure, the Ukrainian government shut down the final operating reactor in Chernobyl. As a result, there was a massive job loss for the community of Slavutych. Retired workers survive on small pensions and have to deal with the consequences of decades of radiation exposure. Younger workers continue to disassemble the plant, but many worry about the uncertainty that lies ahead.
A Life Alone | Video by Maisie Crow | FlakPhoto.com - 0 views

A Life Alone is a beautifully poignant video by New York-based photographer Maisie Crow. It tells the story of Tom Rose, who after 63 years of marriage finds himself living on his own, forced to reengage with his community and battle with his bittersweet memories. Tom is unflinchingly honest in his expressions of love and fear, and his willingness to share his perspectives on life, and Maisie treats this honesty with the respect it deserves. The film is a compassionate look at life-long love and companionship, and the vacuum that it can leave. It's honesty gives it a universality, reminding us of ourselves and our loved ones, while touching on the danger in contemporary western societies of old age becoming solitary.

for digital asset managers the idea is simple: save the best version of the file available now and download derivative formats from the DAM later when they’re needed. This strategy avoids wasting time and precious dance floor space (disk storage) on formats that may never be used.
