I read the first chapter of Off to a Good Start, Launching the School Year. My advisor recommended this book to me because she found it very helpful when she first began teaching. This book has excerpts from the Responsive Classroom Newsletter. The articles focus on building a strong structure for the school year including, The First Six Weeks of School, Establishing Rules, Building a Sense of Group, Caring for Materials and Involving Parents. The first chapter I read was about establishing rules in the classroom. Creating rules for the classroom is very important, especially for the beginning of the school year. The best way to come up with good classroom rules that the students will be more apt to follow, are to involve them and get their opinions about what is right and wrong. I found this resource helpful because it made me realize how much more effective the rules would be if the students agreed on their classroom rules for the year. I would recommend this book to anyone that takes care of children.
