Nelson Mandela Quotes (Author of Long Walk to Freedom) - 2 views

  • “Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front.”
  • “It always seems impossible until it's done.”
  • “I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one's head pointed toward the sun, one's feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”

  • “It always seems impossible until it's done.”
  • “It is not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success.”
  • “For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
  • “I am the captain of my soul.”

I like this quote because it encourages you that you can always reach your goals, but it also teaches you that you need to set your goals well. I think that this quote means that however poor, uneducated, or helpless you are, you can always achieve your goals IF you set them high/low enough that you can actually achieve it. It tells you that the success of your goal depends on the "reachability" of your goal; so you need to grow your goal-thinking skills. This connects to my life because I sometimes set ridiculous goals, and I can learn from this quote that part of my success doesn't depend on me, it depends on how I set the goal. For example, one of my New Year Resolutions when I was in 4th grade was to never get mad at my sister again, but I found that it was a impossible, unreachable goal. I got mad at my sister the very next day! From this quote and my experiences, I learned that you shouldn't whip out goals out of nowhere, you need to think about it and make a SMART goal!

Dear Rachel,  I enjoyed reading your message, "It is not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success." because I had the same idea and thinking when I was looking at your favorite quote. Your examples and the meaning of the quote was very clear. I really like what you said about the example about your New Year's Resolutions, but do you have  any successful examples you did before other than how you felt about that time? Have you ever did something that you aimed of and you succeeded? I liked your post and I will look forward to your next one later!  - Celine Lee

Dear Rachael,       I enjoyed your message because it showed me that we can reach the goal. I really liked what you said about we need to set off our goals well but could you give me another example of what do we need to do with out goal? Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I liked how you think this quote is meaningful and telling you that to set off smart goals.

Dear Rachel, I enjoyed reading your response about "It is not where you start but how high you aim that matters for success." because this also applies to my life as well. I personally don't believe in new year resolutions but I do set some academic goals advised by my parents. When I was younger, I would always plan on crazy things with my brother which included sliding rolled paper tubes all the way down to the first floor when my plan got foiled because of my parent's entrance into the room. Along with the rolls of paper snakes, our liability to be allowed to given paper was taken away. After that I decided to get smarter and after we got back your liability to use paper, I set a goal to slide it down to the third floor instead and color it red so it would look weird. Our response was shocking because there was none. Again I had missed a factor. We quickly coiled the snake and didn't get in trouble but it wasn't worth it and after that I began to understand that some goals you make yourself don't always work out and that most times its not because of your capability but your judgement of your skill. Dear Rachel, I took pleasure in reading your message, because your message taught me that setting a goal without thinking is bad. I always thought that if you set a goal your fine, but I never was able to fulfill goals. So, what you wrote really taught and reminded me to set a goal that's reasonable. I really liked what you said about setting a smart goal, but can could you give me another example of why we should set a smart goal? Thanks for writing.

Dear Rachel: I enjoyed your thoughts on this quote. I don't necessarily agree with you that you should aim high before starting. One reason I say this is because what if you start and your expectation/aim is so high that you can't reach it? Isn't it just better to start with a lower goal and then once you achieve that you can aim for another goal. You should take baby steps, not giant leaps because you might not be able to get to the place you want and you might fall. Overall, I liked your post and I would like to see how our opinions might differ in the future. Thanks, Soohyun

Dear Rachel, I agree with you that, in life, you need to have good goals that you think you can achieve and I really liked your example about your sister, but could you talk more about how it affects people around you and give another example? thanks for writing.
    • Pablo Y

Dear Rachel, I agree with you that, in life, you need to have good goals that you think you can achieve and I really liked your example about your sister, but could you talk more about how it affects people around you and give another example? thanks for writing.

i agree how you said that its hard to reach the goal, even you try. So i have to think about the goal like what you said, and just try to reach the goal. And i liked how you clearly state the quote to your experience.
    • Rishab N

I really like your quote because it is true that we waste our life and fail. I also like your quote because we wate time and time is a limited thing but we waste it but we shouldn't  -Rishabh
  • “A winner is a dreamer who never gives up”
  • Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
    • Junyoung B

I like this quote because it is always interesting to see the point of view of different people on the subject of education. Mandela points out the idea for he says that education is the most powerful weapon that can change the world. I believe this quote means that those who are given education are greatly privileged. This is because some children from Africa and remote areas in Asia or even the U.S. cannot receive their full education. Also as educated we are given this "power" that can change the world and bring hope and enlightenment to the ones in need. As I read this quote it made me think what someone said to me not long ago. My father believes that education and knowledge is the main asset in the world, not money. Therefore, I always try to learn as much as I can.
    • Eileen C

Hi Junyoung,        I really liked what you said about knowledge being more important than money, and how you always want to learn when you can. However, can you please give another example how knowledge really helped you outside of school?  Thanks, Eileen
    • Leopold D

junyoung  I liked this quote/what you have writing and you did a good job doing your writing. I wanted to know if you did your personal life experience cause i didn't see it. Anyways don't stop writing and go on.
    • Justin L

Dear Junyoung,       I enjoyed your message because it thought me that education is important for some people's point of view.  I really liked what you said about opinions about educations are always different but could you give me another example of the opinions of education? Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next.
    • Jean K

Junyoung, I think your response to the quote was correct and accurate. I also liked how you used your example of showing an example in your life. It showed how you felt about education and how we should concentrate on something more educational than money. Thank you for writing.
    • Daniel K

Dear Junyoung, I enjoyed reading your response because you had a similar viewpoint as I did. I really liked how you described education as a privilege and not some kind of tedious work or information that we had to absorb. I especially liked how you talked about trying to learn as much as you can when you get the chance but could you please give a specific tim when you tried to learn as much as you can? Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Daniel Kim
    • Nicholas H

Junyoung, I liked when you stated that your father believes that an education over-rules lots of money. I think you mean is if you have lots of money, but aren't smart, you could screw up big time and lose it all. But if you are smart, you can gain the money and use it wisely.
    • Diane Kang

Dear Junyoung,      I enjoyed reading your personal opinion about the quote, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," because you clearly pointed out what you honestly thought about this quote. However, I disagree with you that education is the strongest weapon that can change the world. I say this is because, I believe that compassion is the most powerful thing that can make a difference in the world. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next.
    • Rachel K

Dear Junyoung: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because your interpretation on this quote was very well thought out and worded.  I agree with you that this quote is saying that we are given a "power" when we are educated because we have knowledge of the world.  You did give an example of what your father thinks about this quote, but could you tell us if you agree that education is the strongest factor of changing the world?  I think that education is a very powerful factor, but I also believe that imagination, creativity, bravery, and motivation are also BIG parts of changing the world.  You can know things, but you might not apply them and think about how to use your knowledge to help the world.  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!
    • Celine L

Dear Junyoung, I enjoyed reading your message about your quote, because you had the same thoughts while I was reading your comment and quote. It was well and neatly organized so I can easily understand what you were fully telling me the definition and the true meaning of the quote. One sentence that stood out for me was, "Mandela points out the idea for he says that education is the most powerful weapon that can change the world." It is very true that Mandela points out his meaning of what he said. I also think that education is a powerful thing for people around the world and that everyone should education no matter what. Another sentence that stood out for me was, "... as educated we are given this "power" that can change the world and bring hope and enlightenment to the ones in need." It is very important that students need education to study and learn so that they could be happy in the future. We should help people who really need help. Thanks for writing. I will look forward to your next post.  - Celine

Junyoung, I understand what you mean by, "knowledge is the main asset in the world, not money." I liked how you provided Text-to-World connections about the quote. Thank you for writing. I look forward to reading more of your writing.
  • “It always seems impossible until it's done.”
    • Justin L

I like this quote because it shows me that nothing is impossible, unless we try our best on it. I think this quote means that there is nothing that is impossible and when one strives for his goal, he will get there before even noticing it. This quote helped me realize that giving up what I think is impossible is not right. Then, I should strive and work hard to reach the goal for the success. For example, when I wanted to buy a deck of card, I had to buy it by my own money. I thought I would never buy those cards. Then, I realized that in my Hagwon, they give off prizes if we read more than 20 books. Since that day, I strived to read off some books. When I finally reached my goal, I realize that there isn't anything that is impossible in our life but we think it is impossible. When it was done, I have accomplished what I strived for.
    • Rishab N

I agree with your comment because we have to try our best in order to achieve anything. I also agree with your comment because working hard always pays off what ever your trying.
    • Soohyun R

Dear Justin: I enjoyed your thoughts on the quote. I don't necessarily agree with you that you should strive for the impossible. One reason I say this is because what if you strive and you actually accomplish your task, but you receive a different, unexpected outcome? Overall, I liked your quote and I like how you encourage striving for something even if you think that goal will never be accomplished. From Soohyun
    • Eric T

I agree with you and as Rishab was trying to say trying hard does pay off and i really agree with that because if you don't try hard, you will end up trying harder and it will get worse but trying hard, best, would lead you o victory so basically I really agree with your post and Rishab's response.
    • Junyoung B

Dear Justin, I enjoyed your response on the quote "The Impossible always seems impossible until it's done," because I never knew that some things can be broken in the sense of impossibility. Still you showed me a lot of facts about the interesting facts about how you came to the idea that impossible things that were to you working on earning those cards wasn't really impossible. It is interesting how you say that your goal was to get a deck of cards and you got it by reading 20 books. I myself had a personal hobby of collecting cards too. Nowadays, its hard to store these cards and you have to toss it out, but still sometimes when I see a small portion of the cards I have then I had before, it makes me believe that I had achieved this through a lot of planning, dealing, and collecting allowances and often with improvision. Therefore, it brings me to conclusion about how much you can earn from your hard works. Still, thanks for writing. I look forward to reading more of you posts. It was very interesting how you connected your personal life and I would like to see it happen again in other posts. Junyoung Baik

I like this quote because it shows that if one really tries to pursue a big goal in life, they will get to it and achieve it. I think this quote means that a person who chases after their biggest dreams and goal in life, and keep picking themselves back up when they fall, they will become a winner and get the big prize they've been waiting for. For example, when I was younger, I always envied my older sister when I saw her doing cool stunts on her bicycle, while I was stuck with my tiny tricycle. Then, that was my "BIG dream." However, when I picked up my sister's old bicycle and tried to pedal, I always fell down. No matter what, I kept on trying and trying, until one day I could ride a two-wheeler. Because I never gave up, I achieved my goal, and became a "winner."
    • Leopold D

Eileen, I liked what you said and i can understand that you didn't know how to ride a bicycle cause i learn it really late. it when i was 4 years old and i tried to ride on a 4 wheeled bicycle and i fell. I tried to do it again and again until i was 6 and i could ride with a 2 wheel bicycle

Dear Eileen,       I enjoyed your message because it clearly tells me that we need to work through our own goals. I really liked what you said about persevering through his/her life but could you give me another example of what do we need to do to reach our goal? Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I got confidence after reading this quote.
    • Junyoung B

I enjoyed reading your response about "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up" I myself am a dreamer, that gives up too easily. I am often daunted by the prospect of the energy and the requirments that I need to put in. One of those restrictions that do not count is the part where you are exercising. My true feelings and compassions come out when I do sports. One of those times was when I learned how to bike. Like you said, it took me some time before I got accostomed to the lack of the two supporting wheels in the back. As you learn how to bike you automatically slowly learn by instinct whether or not the bike is going to fall over by the tilt. As a dreamer it took me some time for me to learn this and when I did during the process of falling over, I became a skilled one. Therefore, I believe that you do show some light on the subject of trying your best on a certain goal. Thanks for writing, Junyoung Baik
    • Jean K

Eileen, I really enjoyed reading your message to the quote because it showed how you wanted to fulfill your dreams and have hope in them at the same time. You clearly showed how we shouldn't give up on our dreams. It shows how we will be a winner since we achieved our goal. Thank you for writing.
    • Daniel K

Dear Eileen, I enjoyed reading your response because it showed that anyone who tries can reach their goal will reach it and become a winner in the end. Not only that but you also tied your opinion to your own personal experience. I liked how you clearly stated that people who don't give up will be the winner, the one who reaches their goals. But could you give me an example of when you gave up? Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Daniel Kim
    • Nicholas H

Eileen, I liked what you wrote, but I'd like to challenge what you said about, "...they will become a winner and get the big prize they've been waiting for." because some people cannot achieve some things because its physically impossible.
    • Rachel K

Dear Eileen: I really enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because you described the meaning of the quote really well and you it was well thought out.  I especially liked your example and where you said, "No matter what, I kept on trying and trying, until one day I could ride a two-wheeler."  I also vividly remember when I road my first bicycle (without training wheels) down the sidewalk without falling.  I can connect to your feelings of being a "winner" and achieving my goal after many, many tries.  I like this quote as well because I like to daydream about things I would like to do in the future.  The problem is that I sometimes don't take steps toward my dreams, because being a "winner" takes a lot of work.  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!
    • Diane Kang

Dear Eileen,        I agree your message about the quote, "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up" because I also believe that people who follow their goals  and never gives up are the ones who will achieve more. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is, "I always fell down. No matter what, I kept on trying and trying, until one day I could ride a two-wheeler." I think this is great example of persevering because you rose every time you fell and eventually achieved your dream of riding a bicycle. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I enjoyed reading about your personal experience.
    • Sunny L

Dear Eileen, I enjoyed reading your message, because your message taught me that I should not give up. I really lied what you said about if you peruse you will eventually be able to reach your goal/dream, but could you give me another example of how this quote can be really used or related to our lives? Thanks for writing.
    • Celine L

Dear Eileen,  I enjoyed reading your message about your quote, because I understood well and that you made all the important parts in order. I also liked your example that exactly matched with your quote. One sentence that stood out for me was, "...if one really tries to pursue a big goal in life, they will get to it and achieve it." That sentence was very powerful and interesting when I read this over again. It made me feel powerful so that I can stand up for what I did right or wrong. Another sentence that stood out for me was, "Because I never gave up, I achieved my goal, and became a winner." Based on your example that you have experienced, I think you were a winner when you finally tried and completed your goal for riding a two-wheeled bicycle. Thanks for writing. I will look forward to your next post.  - Celine

Eileen, I quite agree with you about what you said, "...if one really tries to pursue a big goal in life, they will get to it and achieve it." It is true that we make goals and achieve it. I like hearing about your life experience and your life goal at the time about riding a two-wheeler. Thank you for writing. I look forward to reading more of your writing.

i agree how you said that the person doesn't gives up and stand up again for their dreams, and those person are the winner. And i like how you said that you achieved your goal, because you never gave up, and tried again and again for your big dream. And i like how you relate the quote to your life experience clearly.

Eileen, I agree what you said that "I think this quote means that a person who chases after their biggest dreams and goal in life, and keep picking themselves back up when they fall, they will become a winner and get the big prize they've been waiting for." I agree with it because you have goals and bigger goals and you will work harder for it but I don't really get about your example, please describe it more. Thanks form Eric

Dear,Eileen  I agree with you because it makes a huge goal for us to win in life. I also like your quote because It is true that if we don't give up that we will soon achieve our goal

Hi Justin,      I really liked the quote you chose! It really spoke to me of how if I really try, I can achieve anything! I liked your example, but it seemed a little "minor," in a way. Is there a time when you tried hard for a really big goal? Thanks, Eileen

Dear Justin, I really liked how you said that this quote helped you realize that giving up is not good and how you gave an example, but could you give another example and maybe talk about how this affects the people around you. thanks for writing.

Hi justin, I really liked the quote you chose. It really shows that you did not give up. You reached your goal. I was in the same situation long ago with my mother. I wanted to buy a very cool candy. She tolled me that i had to clean my room everyday for a week. I did so and i got that candy.

Justin, I like how you explained the quote, saying that nothing is impossible. Well, I agree with you and I also liked how you provide a real life example of you at Hagwon. Thank you for writing. I look forward to seeing more of your writing in the future.

I like your quote because it is impossible first but at the end we can always get it if we have hopes and dreams. I also like your quote because it was impossible for me to get good grades but I did it because I hoped -Rishabh
  • “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.”
    • Pablo Y

"After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb." I like this quote because is how life is always going to be, is always going to be something hard in life that we need to make (like climbing a mountain), but then there will be something harder to make (a harder mountain to climb). I think this quote means that when you work hard on doing something and you've finally made it, there will be something harder, waiting for you to try to make it, and that's why we need to work really hard in life. This quote connects to my personal life because is just what I have to do at school or at anything else. For example, in school, I have to do really hard tests and quizzes, but I'm starting to realize that they are getting harder and harder, and is getting difficult to get a good grade on them. Basically this is like working on something really hard and try to do very well in it, and once I've made it, to move on and do something else, something that will always come. And that's how life works.

Hi Pablo,      I really liked your quote and what you said about it. One thing that you wrote that really stands out for me is: "...when you work hard on doing something, and you've finally made it, there will be something harder, waiting for you to try to make it, and that's why we need to work really hard." I like this quote because it really shows that in life, I will always have a bigger goal, and I will always have to keep working on it. Thanks, Eileen

Dear Pablo, I enjoyed reading your message, "After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb." I've always thought that life is like a road that travels on and on, but I personally haven't thought of the slopes and the inclinations of the ups and downs of life. I also enjoyed the part where it said "...once I've made it, to move on and do something else, something that will always come. And that's how life works." because that is how I see life too. I sometimes think that life is like a road on a hill or mountain too. Its as if you are running up a hard slope and you look down to see more hills and mountains that are even higher and harder than the one you just climbed. However, when their is a high slope that your climbing, that means that there is always a low one too. I think life is like earning small gifts when you slowly work and cultivate it as you climb the uphill slope. The gift you earn is like a down slope where you get to relax and add boost for the next one you need to climb. I really enjoyed reading your blog post and I look forward to read more! Junyoung Baik

Dear Pablo, I enjoyed your message, because it's very true for all of us. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is "I think this quote means that when you work hard on doing something and you've finally made it, there will be something harder, waiting for you to try to make it, and that's why we need to work really hard in life.", I think this is true and that we should always keep this in mind, because if we remember we will want to try harder and work harder to achieve that goal. Another sentence that I liked was:"Basically this is like working on something really hard and try to do very well in it, and once I've made it, to move on and do something else, something that will always come. And that's how life works." This stood out for me because, that is how life really works and it teaches us a lesson. Thanks for writing! From, Sunny

Pablo, I liked how you described how in life there are other chances but circumstances in life. Your description was accurate and sure of having to climb another mountain/hill to have another succession. Thank you for writing.
    • Christian K

i agree how you said that life is always going to be hard and tough, and rough like climbing a mountain. And i like how you said that when you are done with something hard, there is going to be more tough and hard things, and thats why we have to work hard to make it.
    • Daniel K

Dear Pablo, I enjoyed reading you response because of how you faced the reality of life. You told us tat even though we may believe that there will be only one challenge in life, there are an uncountable amount of challenges that we must face during the time that we are alive. Not only that but you also gave us a personal example from your life that many students in our school face. On the other hand, I disagree with you that there will always be a more harder task in front of you. I believe that sometimes you will have to climb easier hills or solve easier challenges than before. Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Pablo, I liked when you stated that you have a harder time getting a good grade in schools as your knowledge grows and the assignments get harder. I totally agree with that remark you made. I didn't like what you said about "finally making it" because, as the quotes states, you are never at the end. (Unless you die, I guess.)
    • Diane Kang

Dear Pablo,      I enjoyed reading your message about the quote, "After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb." because I agree to everything you said. I also believe that when you achieve something, there will always be something harder waiting for you to accomplish. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is, "Basically this is like working on something really hard and try to do very well in it, and once I've made it, to move on and do something else, something that will always come. And that's how life works." I think this is excellent  because I strongly agree with you. I think life is just like a video game. Dear Pablo: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, but the second sentence was a bit confusing.  However, I could totally relate to your example of the school tests becoming harder and harder.  In elementary school, I could sometimes ace tests without studying a lot, but in middle school, I find myself studying harder and harder for tests.  It is an uphill climb, but could you give an example of "downhill moments?"  After all, a hill has an uphill and a downhill.  I think downhills are times where things get easier.  Or do you think that the downhill of a "hill" is just the achievement?  Anyways, thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Pablo, I enjoyed reading your response about obstacles in life and how hard it is. I liked how you provided the example with the test and quizzes at school. I agree with both what you said about test and quizzes getting harder and your response. Thanks for writing. I look forward to reading more of your writing.

  • “The greatest glory in livinglies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

I like this quote because of how we humans are mistaken about this concept at times. We tend to try to succeed by not making a mistake, when they should actually have perseverance. For example, in a game, I always worked my best to not get beaten by my friends and kept working to achieve that goal that I eventually got tired of losing and stopped playing. What I didn't do was "rise up" whenever I lost. Another example was when I was at Hagwon and was running down a steel ramp with my friends to the store. That is when I slipped on the ice and slid and went flat. That is why I have these marks on the bottom of my phone because it got scraped off while sliding. Whenever I slipped on the ice, I always just simply got up and continued my way on.

Alliot, I think it was nice of you to list a lot of examples but next time could you try to explain more of the quote? I couldn't completely understand what you were trying to say. Thank you for writing.
    • Diane Kang

Dear Alliot,      I strongly agree to your message about the quote, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall," because I believe that succeeding is being able to recover from our mistakes and moving on. One sentence you wrote that stood out for me was, "What I didn't do was "rise up" whenever I lost." I think this is a great example of how perseverance was not practiced. Another sentence that I stood out for me was,"I always just simply got up and continued my way on." This stood out for me because in the quote it says, "...but in rising every time we fall." and you connected this line to a literal experience of you slipping on ice and standing up again.
    • Justin L

Dear Alliot,      I liked your message because we need to persevere and not try to go for the goal and not making the mistake.  I agree with you that we should persevere and not give up. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I agreed with all your points and I think your thoughts might be similar to mine.

Dear Alliot,      I enjoyed reading your response because we are of the same age and it is easier to relate to your writing. Not only that but I also liked how you explained why you thought that people misunderstood this. I especially liked how you gave examples from your own life about persevering and getting right back up, but could you give me an example of when you misunderstood the quote and thought that succeeding was about not making mistakes? Thanks for writing.  Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Dear Alliot: I liked your thoughts on this quote. I really liked how you gave multiple examples, but could you give me another example of how this could relate to someone emotionally? Overall, I liked your message and I would like to see your response to my question. Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Soohyun

Dear Alliot: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because you gave many examples about how your life related to this quote.  Especially when you said, "... we humans are mistaken about this concept at times.  We tend to try to succeed by not making a mistake, when they should actually have perseverance."  I think that it was great that you explained the quote, but also provided a example where the quote was being "wrongly used."  Another thing that stood out to me was when you said, "... that I eventually got tired of losing and stopped playing."  I think that you gave another good example of what happens if someone is not judged by how many times they get up.  I agree that the person being judged might give up or be frustrated because not many people look at a person's "rise-up moments," but their achievements.  I think this quote is similar to another N. Mandela quote saying, "Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again."  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Dear Alliot, I enjoyed reading your message, because I was reminded that we shouldn't just give up. I really liked what you said about  we should rise up when there's something that makes you fall, because if you don't then that matter/ problem will just end up staying there, but could you give me another example of why we should rise up and how we can do that? Thanks for writing.

Dear Alliot,  I enjoyed reading your message about your favorite quote, "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but not in rising every time we fall." It's because I have the same kind of thinking as you while I was reading your comment and your quote. Your comment was also organized and in order so that I can easily read what you were talking about. I really liked what you said about your great examples, but could you give me some more statements about what the quote is talking about? Thanks for writing and I will look forward to it.  - Celine

  • “A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.”
    • Soohyun R

I like this quote because it shows how most people already have a good heart and a good head, but there are certain people who are even more special because it shows that some people have an even better gift as well, which is to tell people about your experiences. I think this quote means that people who have a good heart and a good head are great people, but they also have the courage to also write or explain their feelings to other people. This quote connects to my life because it makes me remember of the time when I was part of "Stop Kony." I was trying to be nice to the people in Africa who were being tormented by doing an act. The act I did was going around Columbia University with my friends and putting posters everywhere and talking to the people about how bad Kony was. I was having a good mindset while doing this and I had a good heart because I was doing it for the African kids. I also took it to another step by talking to this issue with people and also making posters, so the world could see.

Soohyun I agree that this quote is telling that this quote is about having a good head and good heart is wise people but I really love your examples too like you were having what would wise people do by showing options

The way your defined the quote was very interesting. However, I may be wrong, but the quote seems to imply the fact that there are many other people in the world, even the poor ones, with a good heart and a good brain/head. I think this quote actually means is that one who experiences a lot will forge a good head and a good heart like many other people. However, when they are illiterate and cannot speaking a certain tongue, that all goes to waste. No one can hear what they have experienced, no one to read the problems in the world today. Soohyun, Nelson Mandela seems to speak about the many children in poverty and how the world would recognize the problems when an "uneducated" child speaks or writes about their life in particular. On the contrary, the way you interpreted the quote could also work, but we may never know. Good work Soohyun! ~Darien.

Dear Soohyun, I enjoyed reading your response on the quote, "A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special." because I agree with you. It is because society is so shameful when you see people who can do things yet don't do it because they are afraid. Also people who know it has to be done, procrastinate and delay it until the situation is too bad and it cannot be stopped. "...most people already have a good heart and a good head... but there are certain people who... have an even better gift... to tell people about your experiences." Stood out to me a lot because I believe that I have some talent in writing. I have seen major problems in different societies as well in mine and I have always wondered what I could do to change it. Then I would come to conclusion in writing a review or a post about how little is being done about it. But when I put a pen to the paper or begin to type, I just begin to stare at the blank sheet or a blank paper with a blinking cursor because then I am truly stuck. I cannot put my ideas into words which I have talent in. Now that you point it out I guess we need to always try the risks of it. Junyoung Baik

Soohyun, i like what you said about that quote and you wrote good examples. I remembered that last year in 7th grade. We posted many poster in the street and we saw a lot of videos. Now i know that many people were working on that and making Kony stop what he was doing to the African kids. I liked you "life example' too. It also changed my life with that and i thought about it for like 2 month.

Dear Soohyun,      I really liked your quote and what you said about it. For the most part, I agree with most of your interpretation. However, I don't think doing good actions through a good head and heart is really considered as a gift. I feel like anyone can do it, where as your "gift" idea shows that only some people can. Other than that I love your example of when you helped out for KONY! Thanks, Eileen

Dear Soohyun, I really enjoyed reading your response because I liked how you explained the meaning of the quote. I disagree how you said that when we share the experiences of others that have a good heart and a good mind, then we have a better gift then them. I believe that all of us are equal and that there is no gift that is better than the other. I think a gift becomes better or worse depending on how we use those gifts. For example, if you are a billionaire and use it to hurt people then you are a bad person. However, if you are someone poor and help people, then you are a better person. Although many people would respect the billionaire more I believe that the poor person should be respected more. Over all I think your response was interesting and fun. Thanks for writing! Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Soohyun, I agree when you said that some people have greater gifts because one could be kind and smart, ike you and Mandela said, but if you can, lets say, draw really good, then you can use your kindness and brains to make an awesome drawing.

Soohyun, I agree with you about certain things, but I also disagree in others, for example, I do agree with you that "it shows how most people already have a good heart and a good mind", but I don't agree with you that "but there are certain people who are even more special because it shows that some people have an even better gift as well, which is to tell people about your experiences" because what Mandela meant (I might be wrong) is that the people that have the ability to tell people about their experiences are the lucky, they are the special ones, for there are many people that can't tell anyone what the have experienced, but the people that can talk, can share everything.

The quote I chose is "I am the captain of my soul" -Nelson Mandela. The reason I like this quote is because it tells you to face reality and that you are the one who has to make the decisions. I think this quote means that we are in charge of our life. I think it is telling us that whatever decision we make we must face the consequences because we have responsibility over our life and because we are the ones making the decisions. The person who is in charge of your life is not your teacher, friends, parents, siblings, or relatives it is you. This quote forces you to face reality and shows you that you have no one to blame but yourself. When I was in fifth grade, I got in an argument with one of my friends and of course we got in trouble. When I got back home, I began blaming my friend for everything and in my mind I thought what is his problem! Then I suddenly realized that I had no right to blame him. I realized that the reason I got in trouble was because I responded to what he said. I realized that I had made a choice to fight back and that this was my life where I made my own decisions. The more I thought about it the more I thought to apologize. The next day, I apologized and we became friends again. Because I was the captain of my life, the one who made the choices and will make the choices. Since you are the captain of your soul, you have no one to blame.
    • Jean K

Danny, I agree with your quote because I had the same thing happen to me in the same situation. I started blaming my other friend when we had an argument. I thought through it and it happens to be that there was no reason for me to blame that person at all. It was my choice, in my life, and I later on apologized first. Figures she wanted to apologize to me too. But one question I have is, is the definition this quote to your friend? Possibly family? Thank you for writing.
    • Rachel K

Dear Danny: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, especially when you said gave the example of realizing that getting trouble was your fault, and not your friend or another person. The reason why this stood out to me is because I argue with my sister everyday, so I can see what you mean. My sister and I fight, but, whether it takes a minute or 3 days, we both realize we need to apologize. Another thing that stood out to me was, "The person who is in charge of your life is not your teacher, friends, parents, sibling, or relatives, it is you. This quote forces you to face reality and shows you have no one to blame but yourself." I can also relate to this statement, because my mom always tells me that she can't help me concentrate and do my work (because I always daydream while I should be doing my homework), and that I have to help myself concentrate and finish my work. My mom can't make me do something, I have to choose to do it. Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote. I look forward to your next sticky!

Dear Danny, I read your message with much interest, because I agree that we are the captain of our lives. The way we live are affected by our choice, action, and etc.. I really liked what you said about we shouldn't blame others, but ourselves, because we made the choice. Also, I have one question for you then if our teachers ask us to apologize or someone else asks us to do something in a forceful way and if our lives depended on it would that still mean that we have to be responsible for our actions? Thanks for writing.

Dear Daniel,  I enjoyed reading your message about your favorite quote, "I am the captain of my soul." because I had the same opinion as you when I was reading your message and your favorite quote. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me was, "Because I was the captain of my life, the one who made the choices and will make the choices." I think this is great, because leadership is very important during your life time and you should make the choices that you can make. You had the same thoughts as me while I was reading it. Another sentence that was standing out was, "Since you are the captain of your soul, you have no one to blame." This stood out for me because if you make bad choices, you should not blame anyone, but yourself because you are the one who made the choices whether it was good or bad. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because your post was very unique and interesting when you commented on a quote that had similar ideas with me. "It always seems impossible until it's done." I like this quote, because it relates to my life and it is actually true for students like me, that are studying and doing their homework at home. We often think when we have spare time to relax and have our own freedom. We should keep persevering even though something happens. Secondly, I think this quote means that when you do your homework, study for a test, or do a project, you will always think that, that is the hardest time where you have to finish and complete. Sometimes, you don't want to do it at all and just do something fun instead of that. However, you have to do it later on even though you don't finish it. Lastly, this quote really relates to my life, because you chase every goal through your life. An example that I have experienced is when I had to go to the Cross Country jamboree in SFS, the goal was to run three kilometers. Running three kilometers is very easy for me, but when I did the jamboree if felt like forever. I always asked myself while I was running, "When does this end? Where is the finish line?" I kept on running and balancing the same pace I ran, I could see there was a finish line. At last, I finished the race and got 8th place. I was very happy to hear that and it didn't seem impossible after I was done running the race. I learned a lesson, that I should always try first, and then say it's impossible if it really doesn't work. I always got to try my best no matter what happens.

Celine Dear Celine, I liked your message, but it was kind of confusing, because the first and the second question was unclear. Your answers were changing the story. You were talking about one thing then you suddenly went to another, but the last question I enjoyed it. I really liked what you said in the end about the cross country, but could you give me another example of how this quote can relate to our life. Thanks for writing. From, Sunny

Dear Celine,       I enjoyed your message because it told me that we need to try and strive through our challenge. However, I don't actually agree with you "I should always try first, and then say it's impossible if it really doesn't work."  One reason I say this is because if we strive for our goal and be serious about it, there is nothing to be impossible. Another reason I disagree with you is because in my opinion, she/he shouldn't give up because they think that it is impossible.  Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because it represented me that it is important to not just give up in the first place.

Dear Celine, I enjoyed reading your response about, "It always seems impossible until it's done." Your response was extremely well laid out. I was also very surprised how you connected this to the cross country competition we had at SFS. I mainly remember the course as being mountainous and confusing but I still wasn't very pleased with my grade as 14th in the competition while running. I remember one thing I was singing in my head along with all the other songs that were being jumbled; impossible. I too was very happy to end the course in a total sprint chasing a kid smaller than me but when I saw my score, I was displeased about how close I was to getting the upper hand. Then I thought that it wasn't too bad when you were shouting "This is an impossible track." in your head and still getting 14th. Therefore, I believe that some things aren't impossible, its just where you need to improve. Thanks for writing, I look forward to see more of your writing. Junyoung Baik

I, agree with what you said. I think that if you give up something you will never realize your dream. I have one example for that quote. It was 6 or 7 years ago and my dad told his friends that he wanted to cross the Atlantic twice, with a boat, and 3 kids (age of 4,7,and 10). All of his friends tolled him NOT to go but he didn't listen to them.

i agree how you said that if its not possible, or if it doesn't seems possible, you have to try first, then say that. Because if you try best whether its impossible, its going to affect me that i can do it, even those things are impossible.
  • “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” ― Nelson Mandela
    • Diane Kang

I like this quote because it clearly states that courage is the ability to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. It points out that being courageous is not having any fears but being able to defeat them. I believe that this quote means that anyone who is capable of over coming their anxieties is a brave man. Furthermore, not only police officers, fire fighters, soldiers, or super heros are brave. In fact, anyone can be a hero or a courageous and brave man, but only if they stand against their fright. This quote connects to me because throughout my life I've had times when I had to face my own fears and persevere. For instance, couple of months ago, I saw myself standing on the peek of a ski slope. Despite my fears of the height and vast mountains, I over came my fright, and did not look down. Although I fell and had a difficult time snowboarding down, I was able to reach the end. To sum up, being courageous does not mean having no fears, instead it means to be able to defeat them.
    • Jean K

Diane, I think your response to the quote you chose was accurate. I showed how we had to face our fears in order to overcome them. I have had a similar experience like you, not exactly a snowboarding incident but facing my own fears. It took a lot of time but eventually got over it. I really liked your response to the quote, it summed up how we had to face our fears in order to defeat them. Thank you for writing. <3

Dear Diane,   I really enjoyed reading your response, because I liked how you used a variety of words to explain describe what you thought being courageous meant. I also liked how you gave an example from your personal life like skiing. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is " In fact, anyone can be a hero or a courageous and brave man, but only if they stand against their fright." I think this is true because courages people such as Martin Luther King Jr or Nelson Mandela were just normal people. They were not people with super powers or special abilities. They were just average people who had stood up to their fears. Another sentence that I thought was great was: "To sum up, being courageous does not mean having no fears, instead it means to be able to defeat them. " This stood out for me because I also believe that courage means having fears but being able to overcome them. The reason that I believe this is true is because it is a part of human nature to have fear. In other words, if you are without fear you are not human.      Thanks for writing.  Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Dear Diane:  I really enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because it was well-thought and well-written.  I really liked what you said about yourself overcoming the fear of the ski slopes, but could you give me an example of how you felt afterwards?  Did you feel like a hero or a courageous person?  I went skiing this winter as well, and I felt really proud and glad that I had gotten down a steep hill.  Like you, I was really scared to go down some high slopes, but I guess I was courageous by overcoming that fear.  Thanks for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Dear Diane,I enjoyed reading your message about your favorite quote, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." I think that was a good comment, because having courage is a very important thing and you expressed your feelings about this quote well. I fully understood what you meant for the quote. One sentence you wrote that stand out for me was, "In fact, anyone can be a hero or a courageous and brave man, but only if they stand against their fright." This sentence was very strong and was very persuasive, too. I was able to more thoughts about this quote and what it meant. I like this quote because, this relates/applies to our everyday life and it teaches us what we should do. For example, a lot of people in our society look at others people by their success. Because, most people look at others by their succession, people who didn't succeed will be looked down at. This may not be that person's fault, but because our society looks at others by their success it'll become that person fault. Also, you shouldn't look at others by their success because the person who succeeded would want you to look at them by the problems they went through. In addition, it is rude to look at others by their success, because that means you or the other people is looking at the person by what their result/gain not their abilities or chracteristics. I think this quote means to look at a person by their abilities in doing things not the result of their abilities. This quote connects to my personal life, because during 3rd grade I told one of my friend "You're so great and awesome, because you succeed in all subjects!" Then she said "Don't look at me by what I can do instead look at me by how I got up here." After talking to my friend, I learned no to judge people by their success, but by their work in getting there.

Dear Sunny,      I liked your message because it definitely tells me that not only successes matter but also the abilities and characteristics. I don't really agree with you that it is rude to look others with their results. One reason I say this is because even though their ability is not that great, if one strives for it and make that success, it is judged as proud. Another reason I disagree with you is because it is not actually rude to judge by their success because if that success is good enough for the person, it is not rude for them but encouraging them. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I liked your story that talks about no to judge people by their success, but by their work in getting there.

Dear Sunny: I enjoyed your thoughts on the quote. I don't necessarily agree with you that people want you to look at their faults and failures. One reason I say this is because these people want you to applaud for their accomplishments, but they also want you to look at how many failures they did to accomplish this. Overall, I liked your message and I liked to see how we had different opinions on this quote. From Soohyun

Dear Sunny, I enjoyed reading your response about how you learned that behind the great things and inside the shadows are the things they had faced to come to that point. I myself agree with that because, I enjoy immersing myself with the riddles within the rubik's cube. In a 2X2 rubik's cube it is relatively easy because there isn't much of a path you need to look at. But at a 3X3 rubik's cube, I have gone only as far as matching one side completely. It took me about a time of two months to reach that goal and now I am aiming for getting two sides matched. Therefore, I believe that what you said about the accomplishments that they have achieved brings an idea of the things they went through inside the shadows. Thanks for writing, and I look forward for more of your posts! Junyoung Baik

Hi Sunny,      I really liked what you said about this quote. I could really connect myself into your interpretations and this quote. I hate it when people just look at a good result, but not how many failures I'd had to get to my succession. Thanks for writing, Eileen

i agree, how you siad that success is not important, and judging by them how they success, or not success is not important. And what really is important is by how hard you've tried, and how you get up, even you failed, or fall down.

I like this quote because our society is judged by our looks, achievements, goals, and successes as it mentions in the quote. This quote shows how the world should judge in a different perspective, like how you never give up and stand up again to try once more. I think this quote means how our society always picks out the good achievements in our lives, which is great, but how no one cares about the process that took us to our destination. This quote connects to my personal life because I think that little things in life matter a lot. Those tiny details that took you to your final goal can be summed up to the conclusion. In my current life, little things that helped me through the hard times are the smiles that are occasionally brought up on my face. It's those hidden thoughts and stories that aren't shown. No one could possibly know how hard it was to reach your goal. In someone else's point of view, it might have been the hardest times of their lives and possibly life threatening. We have to respect the experiences they had in the process. Not the just the result.

Dear Jean: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, especially when you said, "...our society picks out the good achievements in our lives, which is great, but how no one cares about the process that took us to our destination." I think you said that really nicely, and it was very true as well. Another point I noticed was, "It's those hidden thoughts and stories that aren't shown." This stood out to me because I have a few hidden thoughts of my own. Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote. I look forward to your next sticky! Rachel

Dear Jean,  I enjoyed reading your message about your favorite quote, "Do not judge me by your successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again." because you exactly told what the real and core meaning of what this quote was about and what Nelson Mandela really was talking about. I liked the way how you did your post in chronological order, because it made it more easier to see and read. I like this quote because it truly says what us humans think will happen, but thats not true. I think this quote means that one feels hatred and seeks revenge towards one, thinking it will do harm to them. As a small snap-shot, it would hurt them and make them feel bad. But as the Big picture, it will get you in more trouble and harm you more than anything. This quote relates to my life because I can easily get mad at someone and I glare and pout and shout and stuff, trying to get a message through to them, but it just makes me look insane and that I need to be put in a mental hospital.
    • Alliot H

I liked how you included your life experience, but can you explain more about this 'Big Picture' that will harm you more than anything? For example, can you give explain a life event that harmed you more than anything? I also disagree with the fact that it harms you more than anything. It can harm you, but not as much as anything.
    • Jean K

Nick, I liked how you described what the quote meant. I kind of think that the last sentence is a run-off and has too much commas in it. Maybe you could try changing that? It was also nice to know how you thought about yourself, not in another person's perspective. Thank you for writing.

Dear Nick,       I enjoyed reading your response because of how you made your writing funny.  I especially enjoyed reading the part where you talked about how you pouted and got angry and it made you look like someone who was insane. Dear Nick, I liked your post, but could you relate this quote in a different way? A way that could relate to everybody. Like Alliot, could you explain it in the "big picture?" Dear Nick,      I liked your message about the quote, "Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies" because I strongly agreed with it. I also think that loathing someone will hurt them in the short- run but it will effect yourself in the long- run. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "I think this quote means that one feels hatred and seeks revenge towards one, thinking it will do harm to them." I think this is excellent because I can truly relate to this. I usually think if I hate someone, it will harm them. However, that's not true. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I agreed to everything you said.

Dear Nick: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because it was well thought out.  I especially liked how you compared being angry to a "small snap-shot" and then the "Big picture."  I also connected with you when you said, "... I can easily get mad at someone and I glare and pout and shout and stuff, trying to get a message through to them..." because I realized about a month ago that my sister wouldn't listen to me if I shouted at her.  Sadly, I still get angry at her a lot and instead of shouting, I threaten her (that isn't much better)...  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Dear Nick,  I enjoyed reading your message about your favorite quote, because I fully understood what you were talking about what you think it meant in your quote. I like this quote because this quote clearly tells what people think of daunting tasks; they think more or less that these difficult tasks are "impossible." However, throughout history, it has been shown that the impossible has been done. This quote more or less shows that the human mind and nature are very lazy and slacking, so humans see difficult tasks as impossible, when they're not. Nelson's quote really connects to my life, because I am an actor. 3 years ago, I started doing drama. When I first started, I thought to myself, "How will I survive school with drama?" Yet, I did drama and still showed advanced grades. Even now, I ask myself, "Will I be abel to show decent grades with drama?" and I do. Many people in my school see drama as another "impossible task" because drama practice is very lengthy and thus there is less time for homework and tests. However, many people and I see that drama is not an impossible task; especially when a young student solves this impossible task. Thus, I feel like this quote because it is the personification of my social life in school.

Hi Darien,      I really liked the quote you picked and how you interpreted it. One thing that really stood out to me, was when you said, "...the impossible has been  done." I like this because, when I think of something being impossible, I usually think of it as being really impossible and never try or do anything about it. However, now that I think about it, in the past, the impossible really has been done. Thanks for writing, Eileen

Dear Darien, I enjoyed your response on the quote "The Impossible always seems impossible until it's done," because I never knew that some things can be broken in the sense of impossibility. Still you showed me a lot of facts about the interesting facts about how you came to the idea that impossible things that were to you-acting-wasn't really impossible. However, I have to contradict you on the idea of how impossible things can be done. Of course through the try of many times you can reach to a certain goal. But that only pertains to certain things. For example, somethings such as going to heaven without dying or going back in time is simply impossible. These things are impossible because they break the laws of physics as well as the law or the commandments of the Lord himself. Thus, I believe that somethings will remain impossible. Still, thanks for writing. I look forward to reading more of you posts. It was very interesting how you connected your personal life and I would like to see it happen again in other posts. Darien, I really liked how you described and showed examples of your response to the quote. The process is actually the impossible part and the result should be satisfying. Thank you for writing.

Dear Darien,  I really enjoyed reading your response because of how you connected the quote to your personal life. Not only that, but I also like how you said that throughout history, many people have done the impossible. It was as if you were encouraging us to aim for the highest, the impossible. However, could yo please give me an example where someone did the impossible in history? Thanks for writing!( Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Dear Darien: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, because it was well thought and well written.  One thing that I liked about what you wrote is that you gave example of questions that you ask yourself, because it shows what you were thinking and your inner feelings.  I really loved your example, because it seems to me that drama and school are nearly impossible to put together, yet you showed everyone that it IS possible.  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Darien, I like how you said that this quote clearly tells what people think of daunting tasks because I think that that message is trying to be told too. Dear Darien, I enjoyed reading your message about your quote, because you had great examples that relates to this quote. I have had the same response as you while I was reading the quote. Your comment was also organized so that it was easy to understand and see. One sentence that stood out for me was, "...they think more or less that these difficult tasks are "impossible". It depends to the person's lives and how they think of life while they are doing a task, job, or work that they do. Another sentence that stood out for me was, "...especially when a young student solves this impossible task." This part was very interesting, because people who do drama had to stay until 9PM or more to practice parts and plays that you guys do. It is not always impossible that you can not finish homework after when you finish drama practice. You still persevered doing your drama practice AND your homework. Thanks for writing. I will look forward to your next post. - Celine

I like this quote because it tells about Nelson Mondala having courage Is really good because he tells people about his courage. I think this quote mean ts a hat Nelson Mandala was a very brave man and had no fear. You need to keep on going even if you are scared. This quote connects to my personal life because i had that fear once in my life too. When i was about 11 my G-father died(my father's father) And i was afraid to early. But i decide to conclude it and i thought that was life and every one have to die one day. so i stopped thinking about it.
    • Nicholas H

Leopold, I liked what you had to say about this quote. I didn't like it when in the 1st sentence you said it showed that he has courage twice. I challenge when you said, "I think this quote means ts a hat Nelson Mandala was very brave man and had no fear." because in the memoir we read in class, it says that he had fear, AND everyone has fear, no matter who they are. ( Also, you spelt "Mandala" wrong, its Mandela...) I don't understand when you talked about your "G-father" that you were "-afraid to early." This is severe incorrect grammar, please look into that. Again, I don't understand what you mean by, "But i decide to conclude it and i thought that was life and everyone have to die one day. So I stopped thinking about it." There is ton's of incorrect grammar and misspelt words. Over all, I think you did a okay job and bye...

Leopold, I liked your example and I can relate to it because my grandma was in the same situation. It's hard going through those times, especially a family member's death. But we do have to keep moving on just like you said. Next time maybe you could revise your response a little bit. It had a few grammar mistakes. Thank you for writing.
    • Justin L

Dear Leopold,  I enjoyed your message because courage is very important.   I don't really agree with you that Nelson is full of courage. One reason I say this is because the quote is saying 'one' can be courage and not he himself is courage. Another reason I disagree with you is because he is one who created the quote and now actually did it. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next.

Dear Leopold,    I enjoyed reading your response because of how you explained your opinions. I also liked how you gave a personal example from your life. Not only that but I can relate to your story because my paternal grandfather passed away as well. On the other hand, could you explain in more details about what made you realize that being courageous meant having fears and overcoming them? Thanks for writing! (Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Dear Leopold, I read your message with keen, because what you said about Nelson Mandela was interesting and it was a little bit confusing at the same time. I don't agree with you that this quote means that a man doesn't have fear one reason I say this is, because the quote itself says that having courage is not having fear, but conquering it. Another reason I why I disagree is, because this quote doesn't talk anything about keep on going on if you're scared. Thanks for writing.
    • Rachel K

Dear Leopold: I enjoyed your reflection on this quote, but it was a bit hard to understand because of the grammar...  One thing that I disagree about is when you said that Nelson Mandela had no fear.  I think this quote is saying that you need to go on even if you do have fears.  Everybody has fears so this quote would probably apply to everyone!  I also cannot fully relate to your feelings when your grandpa passed away since I haven't had that experience yet.  But I can imagine how hard it would be on you and your family, so I would like to congratulate your "passing" of your fear and being brave!  Thank you for sharing your opinion on this quote.  I look forward to your next sticky!

Dear Leopold      I enjoyed reading your message about the quote, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." because you stated your personal opinions about this quote. Also you set a great example of how you defeated your own fears. However, you said in the quote, "I think this quote means that Nelson Mandala was a very brave man and had no fear." I don't agree with you because in Nelson Mandela's quote, it clearly says that he learned having no fears isn't courage but being able to defeat your fears is courage. However, you responded saying that Nelson Mandela had no fears and that was why he was a brave man. I believe that Mandela was a brave man because he was able to over come his fears. Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I really liked reading your honest opinion about this quote.

Leopold, I agree with what you say about Nelson Mandela having courage and I can relate to your life, about how your grandfather died. My grandfather (my father's father) died just two years ago in 2011 and I know how it feels like. The only problem I had with your response, was the grammer mistakes, other than that it was fairly good. Thank you for writing. I look forward to read more of your responses and life experiences.

I chose this quote because this quote shows that you are the captain of yourself. This quote is for people that are weak and get controlled by someone or something easily; example this person called "Max" promised to not eat fast food but he is addicted so he still eat fast foods, this shows that Max is weak and get controlled by his soul. Most people are similar to him but some people will think "since I promised and I am a king of my soul, I won't get controlled that easily." These people think before they promise while other people don't think.

Eric, I also agree to with this quote, but I have a question. How does this affect your life? You gave an example about a fictional character, but I would like to know about how this quote affects you. Apart from that, I like the way you actually expressed the quote. Another thing to add is that you used king instead of captain. Kings are usually tyrants and people who listen to kings are forced to listen to them, but captains are the ones giving out orders. I interpret that you are saying that you should be in absolute control of your soul, when you should actually think about how your soul would react to your orders. Since after all, you said that this quote is for people that don't think and are not in almost complete control of their thinking and their soul. Apart from that, I really found how your quote was interpreted in an interesting way. Thanks! ~Darien

Dear Eric, I enjoyed your response on the quote, "I am the captain of my soul." because I totally agree with you. Some people like kings and tyrants do try to oppress the weak, but in such a society, there cannot be an equilibrium and when it breaks, bloodshed erupts. This response has made me turn within myself and see what problems I am facing and what I cannot do and what is affecting me. One of the main sentences that stood out to me was "...to not eat fast food but he is addicted so he still eat fast foods, this shows that Max is weak and get controlled by his soul." I myself was once addicted to fast food. Normally, it goes away, but sometimes it just sticks to your guts and you want to eat a burger, or ramen, or whatever it is again and again. You have to make a decision on yourself whether or not to face it and stop it. Another one that stood out to me was, "since I promised and I am a king of my soul, I won't get controlled that easily." This is particularly hard for me. I do not have a strong will to fight against addictions. I don't mind being oppressed either. This quote brings me light over the problems of such things and dawns light on it. Thanks for writing I look forward to reading more. Junyoung Baik

Eric, i liked what you said about that quote and you gave a very strong example. The person that was weak and addicted to fast food  its an good example. I am addicted to many things like that man said to max do eat fast food. My mom told me that i could'nt play on my phone for a week cause i was addicted to it.

Eric, I agree with your answer to the quote but I don't clearly understand what you mean by you are the king of your own soul? Maybe you could explain it more clearly, thank you for writing.

Eric,      I really liked the quote you chose and what you said about it. However, can you tell me how this quote relates to you, not just an example? Thanks, Eileen

Dear Eric,  I enjoyed reading your quote because I chose the same quote as you. I liked how I saw that there was more than one explanation to this quote and that everyones was a little bit different. I also realized that there were also similarities inside our explanations as well. However, I disagree that this quote is only for the weak. I believe that this quote is also for the strong people out there the ones that don't get controlled by others because  some of those people may be wasting their life and trying to blame it on other people. I think that those people need to realize that they have no one to blame other than themselves. That is what I believe is the purpose of this quote. Thanks for writing. Sincerely, Daniel Kim

Eric, I support your statement when you said, "Most people are similar to him but some people will think 'since I promised and I am a king of my soul, I won't get controlled that easily.' " Because, like you said, people just do what they feel like they NEED to do, thus they sometimes do the wrong things. I can connect to that because I tend to do that A LOT.

Dear Eric, I liked your message because you said what you thought this quote meant, but I don't agree with you that the people get controlled easily, I would rather say that they get tempted easily, another reason that I don't agree with you is because they aren't getting controlled by anyone, they just feel the temptation of doing something. Thanks for writing, I'm looking forward to what you write next because you did very well telling what you thought this meant for you and gave a good example.

Dear Erica,       I enjoyed reading your message about the quote, "I am the captain of my soul." I disagree to your opinion about this quote because I don't think this quote only applies to people who are weak. In my opinion, this quote relates to everyone. Also I don't get your message, "Most people are similar to him but some people will think "since I promised and I am a king of my soul, I won't get controlled that easily." These people think before they promise while other people don't think." Can you please explain? Thank you!

Eric, I like how you provided who this quote is for. I would like to see a life experience tied in with the quote and why. Thanks for writing. I expect to see more of your writing and life experiences.

Dear,Eric  I really liked your quote that you picked and it is true that we are in control of your soul and I also liked how you said it is a persons will if he wants to achieve something. -Rishabh

I like this quote because I won a tournament because I dreamed of winning a tournament and It was also hard to not to give up but I did not give up and I won the tournament.

Dear Rishab: I enjoyed your thoughts on the quote.I really liked what you said about how you didn't give up and you won the tournament, but could you give me another example of this? How do you think this could relate to other people's lives? Overall, I liked your quote, but could you give more information about what you think about in this quote?
    • Eric T

I really like your post and winner thing but I think it will be better if it is longer. I like how you explained why you won the tournament and that you never gave up. My response is just similar to Soohyun so just to tell you it will be better if you put more information

Dear Rishabh, I enjoyed reading your response on the quote "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up" because of how you connected to your life. However, I cannot see a clear point within your writing and I also cannot see how much this relates to your life. Could you give me more examples about this tournament you won? It was a great response overall, but I think that I need to see more about you inside it. Junyoung Baik

Rishabh,      I liked how you shared your experience that related to this quote. However, can you tell me more information about what you think about this quote, and your interpretation of it? Thanks, Eileen

Rishabh, you picked a wonderful quote and you provided us why with wonderful information. However, I feel like that information seems inadequate. You talk about your personal connection with this quote, and the experience is very abnormal in a good way. I would like to see what you think of this quote, but other wise, wonderful connection! Well done Rishabh! ~Darien

Rishab, I agree that your personal experience of winning the tournament fits together. However, you didn't supply enough information for me to reply and your grammar is completely incorrect. Sorry. ~Nick

Dear Rishab, I really enjoyed reading your message about the quote, "A winner is a dreamer who never gives up." Your connection to your personal life was a great example of this quote. However, could you please explain your thoughts about this quote? Thank you!

Rishab, I enjoyed reading about you winning a tournament, but can you actually explain the quote and not write just an example? Thanks for writing. I expect to see more of your writing.

i agree how you said that who don't gives up is the winner. But i think it will be ok, if you write it more clearly. But i liked how you described the quote to your example, but i think its going to be ok, if you add some more details how you felt about the quote in your example.
