Similar to humans who have obsessive compulsive disorder, dogs exhibit compulsive behaviors, in which they might repetitively spin around, chase their tail, bark, chew, or suck on a toy or a part of their body for an excessive amount of time. This discovery may lead to the development of improved treatments and therapies for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) in people.

Agriculture Linked to DNA Changes in Ancient Europe - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
The agricultural revolution was one of the most profound events in human history, leading to the rise of modern civilization. Now, in the first study of its kind, an international team of scientists has found that after agriculture arrived in Europe 8,500 years ago, people's DNA underwent widespread changes, altering their height, digestion, immune system and skin color. Researchers had found indirect clues of some of these alterations by studying the genomes of living Europeans. But the new study, they said, makes it possible to see the changes as they occurred over thousands of years.

Is Musical Talent Rooted in Genes? - 0 views

  •
The researchers concluded that genetics - or perhaps other factors, such as environmental influences - play a larger role than practice in certain aspects of musical talent such as recognizing pitch and rhythms. Mosey and her colleagues made another interesting finding: Genes may determine a person's motivation to practice. The majority of participants who reported practicing a lot also shared a high percentage of the same genes. "The association between practice and skill was largely due to the same genes, suggesting that practice will not necessarily make you perfect, but it certainly will enhance your skills," Mosey said.

Matt Anticole shows why science needs both laws and theories to understand the whole picture.
