I often get asked to help teachers start their flipping journey so I decided to share my own, and hopefully it will provide some insight as to how you can successfully flip your classroom.

Over the past few years, the Flipped Learning method has created quite a stir. Some argue that this teaching method will completely transform education, while others say it is simply an opportunity for boring lectures to be viewed in new locations. While the debate goes on, the concept of Flipped Learning is not entirely new.

A flipped classroom (or flip teaching) reverses the traditional teaching methodology, giving students access to new material at home, usually via screen casting, while class time is used to assimilate this knowledge via debates, problem solving and critical thinking. When flipping a classroom, the teacher is able to offer more personalized guidance and interaction with students, instead of lecturing.

At its core, "flipped instruction" refers to moving aspects of teaching out of the classroom and into the homework space. With the advent of new technologies, specifically the ability to record digitally annotated and narrated screencasts, instructional videos have become a common medium in the flipped classroom.

I recently attended the ISTE conference in San Diego, CA. While I was only there for about 36 hours, it was easy for me to pick up on one of the hottest topics for the three-day event. The "flipped classroom" was being discussed in social lounges, in conference sessions, on the exhibit floor, on the hashtag and even at dinner.

More schools should consider extending the benefits of mobile learning to the bus.
