As parents you are legally responsible for registering the birth of your child and you should sign the register of births at the office of the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths. The hospital or maternity home may do this on your behalf but, if you've had a homebirth, you'll have to do it yourself.

Now that you are parents, if you haven't already done so, you should organise life insurance and serious illness cover. These will ensure that if anything happens to either or both of you, your children will be financially secure. Life insurance covers your family in the event of your death.

If the mother dies within 24 weeks of the child's birth, the father is entitled to a period of leave up to the end of the 14th week after the birth. So, If the mother dies in childbirth, the father is entitled to 14 weeks leave.
