Report: Blended learning could hit or miss | Policy | eSchoolNews.com - 0 views

  •
Blended Learning, which combines online distance learning and traditional classroom education for K-12 discussed in this article, has potential, but needs help to reach its "full potential".  My favorite quote in the article is: " 'There is a significant risk that the existing education system will co-opt online learning as it blends it into its current flawed model-and just as is the case now, too few students will receive an excellent education,' the report states."

What Happens When the Internet Runs Out of Addresses - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Today, the Internet that Mr. Cerf helped create more than 30 years ago is about to max out. Within the next 12 to 18 months, or perhaps sooner, every single 4.3 billion Internet Protocol addresses will be allocated, and the Internet, at least as it exists today, will have reached full capacity. “There are 4.3 billion addresses, and a lot of people have more than one,” said Leo Vegoda, manager of number resources at Icann. “And there are seven billion people on the planet. That’s a big mismatch.”

Europe Seeks Ways to Lower Data Roaming Charges - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • BARCELONA — Neelie Kroes, the European telecommunications commissioner, said Monday that she was likely to seek new regulations to put an end to the “rip-offs” that Europeans face when using data services on smartphones outside their home countries. Speaking at the opening day of the Mobile World Congress, the industry’s largest convention, Ms. Kroes said limits placed on the charges operators charge each other for mobile data roaming, which were enacted in 2007, had failed to significantly lower the charges consumers paid.

Court Likely to Uphold Constitutionality of 'Nude' Airport Scanners | Threat Level | Wi... - 0 views

Airline passengers in the United States understand they will be treated as suspected terrorists when going through airport security checkpoints. Yet nearly a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, airport security has become a lot more invasive with the rollout of the so-called "advanced imaging technology" scanners, paid for with $1 billion in stimulus funds. The scanners - now deployed at about 78 airports - use either millimeter wave or backscatter technology to create a virtual picture of the traveler's naked body. The image is then viewed by a screener  with the Transportation Security Agency iin a sequestered room away from the checkpoint.

Digital Patient Data Holds Promise and Problems - NYTimes.com - 1 views

  •
In an attempt to improve health care and reduce long-term expenses, the U.S. government is in the process of digitalizing patient medical records. There are arguments on both sides of the aisle with obviously complications for smaller physician practices. Even though this new system is working for the Mayo Clinic and other large health organizations, I'm skeptical that smaller non-profits will have the resources and correct strategies to make this transition with limited help from the government.

Coming to Your Kindle: Library Books - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
With the recent news that more e-books were brought than paperbacks in February, its no surprise that Amazon is allowing the Kindle to borrow e-books from more than 11,000 libraries across the U.S. in working with OverDrive, a huge supplier of e-books for public schools and libraries. Students and non-profits will now have greater access to e-books, but the limit on checking out books is a concern with HaperCollins announcing a new policy that requires e-books to expire after being check out only 26 times.
