From Mashable 10 free iPhone Word games, (most of them tasters or lite versions). The list comprises Crostix, Hangman, WordJong, Jumbline, Word Scramble, Moxie, 2 Across, Word Solitaire, Alexia and Words With Friends. The article has a synopsis of the games.

"The educator and developer community at iear.org has taken nominations and votes for their 2010 Best App Awards. While nominations and voting is now closed, the list of dozens of nominees is a valuable resource. Nominations were made in early December by those who read I Educational Apps Review's blog. There are nearly 20 categories and each category is divided into elementary and secondary. You can view the 125 apps categorized in a spreadsheet or view their icons in a widget. Clicking an icon will take you to the app's details page in the App Store. The widget was made using Appsfire's Widget Maker."

The content has been developed by scientists at Museum Victoria, Australia's largest public museum organisation. The app holds descriptions of over 700 species encompassing birds, fishes, frogs, lizards, snakes, mammals, freshwater, terrestrial and marine invertebrates, spiders, and insects including butterflies. From animals found in rockpools, minibeasts in your garden, to wildlife you might see in the bush. We've put in a lot of species, but it's still a fraction of the complete fauna of Victoria. Our scientists will continue to add additional species and refine descriptions over time."

Yet another list of iPhone apps to trawl through though this one is perhaps more serious than most as it focusses on things environmental. From the Treehugger group it contains short reviews and links to a range of green apps including carbon calculators, Offset calculators, a range of metering and measuring apps amongst others. Whilst many may be of personal interest there are a number that may be also useful in the classroom context.

If you are using iTouches in schools you may need to create an iTunes App Store account without the usual registration of a credit card, (note to purchase pay for apps you will need a credit card). This page from Apple shows the procedure to use.
