True – however the contacts I have on my phone and iPad and Mac... they now sync into this mysterious lump of stuff called iCloud.

My current email client (thunderbird) has no option for adding a contacts account.It comes with the IMAP setup.
Setup a new email account with the following settings:Incoming Mail Server•Host name – p02-imap.mail.me.com•Username – Email excluding "@me.com"
Outgoing Mail Server•Host name – smtp.me.com
Make sure SSL secure authentication is turned on.A note from that link: If you get an error stating that p02-imap.mail.me.com is not respronding please try p04-imap.mail.me.com.
