    The Land of the Free punishes or imprisons more of its citizens than any other nation. This collection of testimonials from criminal offenders, family members, and experts on America's criminal justice system puts a human face on the millions of Americans subjugated by the US Government's 40 year, one trillion dollar social catastrophe: The War on Drugs; a failed policy underscored by fear, politics, racial prejudice and intolerance in a public atmosphere of out of sight, out of mind. The United States has only 5% of the world's population, yet a full 25% of the world's prisoners. At 2.5 million, the US has more prisoners than even China does with five times the population of the United States. 8 million Americans (1 in every 31) languish under some form of state monitoring known as correctional supervision. On top of that, the security and livelihood of over 13 million more has been forever altered by a felony conviction. The American use of punishment is so pervasive, and so disproportionate, that even the conservative magazine The Economist declared in 2010, never in the civilized world have so many been locked up for so little. The project will unfold over a two year period, beginning with the release of this feature-length documentary and then continuing on with the release of short films and complete interviews from each of the 100 participants in the project, meant to represent the 1 in 100 Americans that are currently sitting behind bars.

  • Government 2.0 is a citizen-centric philosophy and strategy that believes the best results are usually driven by partnerships between citizens and government, at all levels.  It is focused entirely on achieving goals through increased efficiency, better management, information transparency, and citizen engagement and most often leverages newer technologies to achieve the desired outcomes.
  • Government employees are traditionally risk-averse, a good thing when the pace of change is relatively slow.  However, in today's fast-paced world the pace of government change, the pace of government execution is often too slow.

  • 3) Engage citizens in creating value and saving money. True results are being delivered in the private and public sector when customers/citizens are engaged in the process.  Platforms like BubbleIdeas, UserVoice, IdeaScale, and others, are being used to give citizens a voice in the daily execution of government. I
  • 4) Become agile, delivering on 100 day plans. While politicians often make promises for their first 100 days in office we rarely see clearly defined goals combined with execution plans and measurable outcomes publicly displayed.

    Right now, according to a number of studies, we are losing about $100 billion every year because corporate America and the very wealthy are stashing their money in tax havens like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. We should be aware that in 2009, ExxonMobil made $19 billion in profits and not only did the company not pay anything in taxes, it got a $106 million refund from the IRS. We should also be aware that since 1997, we have almost tripled funding for the military. So if we are serious about reducing the deficit, those are things we need to look at-not at Social Security, not programs everyday Americans need.

  • Auch das Internet hat sich verändert. Durch Phänomene wie Crowdsourcing kam es zu einer Amateurisierung ganzer Berufssparten. Ich denke, dass sich die Kulturindustrie langsam aus dem Würgegriff einiger Experten befreit. Das haben wir zu einem großen Teil dem Internet zu verdanken. Ich sage es immer wieder und ich habe es auch in mein Buch geschrieben: Ich halte diese Entwicklung für äußerst positiv.

Die Situation in Österreich kenne ich leider zu schlecht, um etwas darüber sagen zu können. Es gibt allerdings einige europäische Länder, die Crowdsourcing relativ früh aufgegriffen haben. Kurz nachdem mein Artikel darüber erschienen ist, gab es ein Experiment in den Niederlanden. Die Regierung hat dort versucht, die Bevölkerung durch Crowdsourcing in den Gesetzgebungsprozess einzubinden

    Social Media wird in zwei Jahren auch in mehr als 80% der deutschen Firmen Einzug gehalten haben. Die USA sind in Sachen Internet 2-3 Jahre voraus. Ein guter Grund, sich anzusehen, wie die großen Firmen und Organisationen auf der anderen Seite des Atlantiks ihre eigenen Richtlinien für den Umgang mit dem Social Web zurecht gelegt haben.
