The MOOC (massive online open course) has suddenly become one of the hottest trends in the training world. We've already talked about what MOOCs are and how they work. In this post, we're going to look at some of the pros and cons of this approach compared to more traditional classroom training.

A study co-authored by Wharton professor Ezekiel J. Emanuel concerning the impact of MOOCs on traditional business education found that MOOCs actually complement and enrich a traditional education rather than taking students away from brick-and-mortar schools.

In an era where most toddlers are comfortable with a smartphone as with crayon, it would be foolish to think that the traditional model of education will survive as is. Innovation demands constant change, most of which is evident in the methodologies of higher education.

Daphne Koller is one of the founders of Coursera, discussed in the Moodle this week. During this talk, she starts off with her own experience to outline the importance of MOOCs and open education. She makes reference to recent episodes from around the world to make her talk effective to the viewer. It's worth a watch!
