Even gigabit Ethernet switches are already mainstream in the market, for some reason, 10/100Mbps Ethernet switches are still alive in the market. 10/100Mbps Ethernet switches are released in the market earlier than gigabit and 10G Ethernet switches. The transmission rate of 10/100Mbps means 10Mbps or 100Mbps auto-adapted. When we say a switch is 10/100Mbps, it means the switch supports both transmission rates and most nowadays switches are designed with auto-adaptive features. It will detect and adapt different rates according to the devices connected with it. Under certain network needs for simple network demands, 10/100Mbps is still enough for the end-users. Normally, such network demands simply mean internet surfing and browsing. For more complicated internet and network activities, especially when file transfer and video involved, gigabit switches would be a much better choice.
