Taking Charge of the Web in Your Classroom | Scholastic.com - 0 views

  • Students will undoubtedly have already encountered the digital world by the time they enter your classroom, but they may not have considered the consequences of their online actions. Here are several common-sense rules for users under the age of 13, the maximum age that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act considers an individual a “child”:
  • Stick to kid-friendly search engines. Search engines are indispensable tools for web-based research. Most, however, are too indiscriminate to be useful to young users. For example, searching for "White House" on Google returns almost three billion results, most of which will be irrelevant or inappropriate for students.

These suggestions should be considered in every classroom no matter how much technology is used.  If technology is used at all, teachers need to pay attention to these.

Planet Nutshell » NetSafe Episode 1: What is the Internet? (Grades K-3) - 0 views

  •
I love this video for teaching internet safety to young students. It does a good job of defining what the internet is so little ones can understand. It explains how the internet can be fun and helpful but also scary without rules and an adult helper. I have used this for PK through 2nd grade.

  • Our brain on stories: How our brains become more active when we tell stories

  • We are wired that way. A story, if broken down into the simplest form, is a connection of cause and effect. And that is exactly how we think.
  • Why does the format of a story, where events unfold one after the other, have such a profound impact on our learning?
  • A story can put your whole brain to work.
  • Exchange giving suggestions for telling stories
  • a story is the only way to activate parts in the brain so that a listener turns the story into their own idea and experience.
  • Write more persuasively—bring in stories from yourself or an expert
  • The next time you struggle with getting people on board with your projects and ideas, simply tell them a story, where the outcome is that doing what you had in mind is the best thing to do.
  • The simple story is more successful than the complicated one

This website discusses the importance of storytelling when teaching new material to a class. We felt like when most people think of storytelling they only think of teaching in that method to younger kids but it can actually be beneficial to all ages. We thought this website had a lot of good reasons and facts as to why storytelling can be beneficial in the classroom.

A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof. Here he shares the science of why storytelling is so uniquely powerful.

I like this website because it explains that technology isn't something that know one knows how to use. Children are more tech savvy than most of the teachers because the kids have grown up using technology. In this day and time it is essential that students know how to work technology to get through school.
