Internet Safety for Kids: Teaching Kids About Internet Safety - 1 views

  • The Internet can be a wonderful place to learn, shop, play games, and talk to your friends. Unfortunately, there are also predators, identity thieves, and others online who may try to harm you. In order to be safe online, it's important for you and your kids to be aware of the dangers.
  • If you're a parent or guardian, you can help to keep your kids safe by talking to them about their Internet use, teaching them about online dangers, and learning everything you can about the Internet so you can make informed decisions.
  • In order to keep your kids safe, you'll need to know about the different types of online dangers that exist. For example, kids and teens may find inappropriate content on the Internet, such as pornography or obscene language. There is also a possibility of cyberbullying or cyberharassment from others online. This does not mean your child will encounter all of these threats.

  • Many kids and teens like to post photos and share information about themselves. In some cases, this information can be used by online predators.

  •
I love this video for teaching internet safety to young students. It does a good job of defining what the internet is so little ones can understand. It explains how the internet can be fun and helpful but also scary without rules and an adult helper. I have used this for PK through 2nd grade.

Taking Charge of the Web in Your Classroom | Scholastic.com - 0 views

  • Students will undoubtedly have already encountered the digital world by the time they enter your classroom, but they may not have considered the consequences of their online actions. Here are several common-sense rules for users under the age of 13, the maximum age that the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act considers an individual a “child”:
  • Stick to kid-friendly search engines. Search engines are indispensable tools for web-based research. Most, however, are too indiscriminate to be useful to young users. For example, searching for "White House" on Google returns almost three billion results, most of which will be irrelevant or inappropriate for students.

These suggestions should be considered in every classroom no matter how much technology is used.  If technology is used at all, teachers need to pay attention to these.
