Is this the end for books? - 5 views

  •
In 1996, the US computer entrepreneur Brewster Kahle set up the Internet Archive, its mission being to provide "universal access to all knowledge". This admirable project strives to store copies of every single web page ever posted: a ghostly archive of the virtual.

Thank you for posting. Although I am not very keen on reading fiction electronically, the article was very interesting and informative about the latest tendencies in electronic publishing.
  •
I am one of those people who like reading books electronically and enjoy it. Kindle has been around for some years now but we still have books publshed in paper format. There is still a number of people who prefare to have paper copy of a book. Books are here to stay. I have a kindle but I hardly ever use the devise. I use the app on my mobile, computer or Ipad.

Scholarly Publishing in South Africa - 0 views

  •
This is core notes from a one day seminar in 2012 (http://www.stm-assoc.org/events/academic-and-professional-publishing-in-south-africa/) on academic publishing in South Africa and Africa. in South Africa it would seem that there are many barriers to prevent scholars from producing and publishing their work. Although these barriers are a huge concern, there is a wealth of information being gathered and research being completed. This article is interesting as it shortly summarizes the challenges for academic work to get published in Africa.

After Reversal in Key Copyright Case, What's Next for Academic Fair Use? - 3 views

  •
On October 17, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed and remanded a key fair-use ruling in a long-running case over digital course readings on college campuses. But while on the surface the decision is a legal victory for the plaintiff publishers, two major library associations say the ruling is in fact a win for libraries, and for a popular practice known as "e-reserves."

Very relevant for our academic librarians.

For exemple, guys from a public bank made some changes in the "Cimorelli" wikipedia page. Information Literacy and Engaging the 21st Century Learner - 4 views

  •
This video highlights ways in which educators (and parents) can incorporate 21st century skills in their lessons to digital natives. Admittedly, as a teacher, I get overwhelmed by all of the information out there and feel pressure to use technology that I'm still learning to be comfortable with. This is a good video that can show you how to get started, geared more towards middle/upper school.
  •
The video begins with 3 minutes of visuals and - very annoying - piano music. I would have turned it off after 30 seconds because I assumed that there would be 13 minutes of this. But since fraup74 says it was a good video I skipped ahead to see if there was more. Otherwise, I would not have persevered. In terms of content, it is a good basic resource (a woman speaks, using screenshots to show how to use online tools). The video is not very engaging.

Hi there! Thank you for sharing this resource. I think that it is extremely helpful to have a list of websites and pictures that I can use with respect to copyright listed on one page. There have been many times when I need to quickly find an image to use for a project, and have gotten caught up in trying to find a picture with an appropriate copyright license. I also did not know that images created by government employees were copyright exempt, and I really enjoyed searching through some of those sites!
  •
It's not only the Creative Commons part that is important but the Public Domain (CC0) pictures, that can be used.
  •
¿Can any picture be used without failing into copyright stops?
  •
Thanks for sharing! The list is very useful. But I'm not sure if it is actually "OK" for university students to use online sources (videos from YouTube, or images downloaded from Google) for academic purpose/ personal use when talking about "fair dealing".
  •
Again, thak for sharing, this tools can be very interesting for who want to create an educational blog Julia Echeverria

I don't really agree with the conclusion of the article: I don't think it is due to the lack of responsability of people that companies like Facebook can do experiments with people as if we were mouses. I think it is the company's responsability, and people are the victims of such manipulation, not the "capable to decide" partner of it.

Textbook Crisis - For using just a chapter from a book, I think this is a very good idea. I did not know teachers and professors could do this. I think this is very productive idea, instead of students or making students buy the whole book for a chapter.

How Rigorous Is the Post-publication Review Process at F1000 Research? - 0 views

This provides blog post provides an interesting comparison of the post-publication review process of F1000 Research to the traditional peer review model. What I really found interesting is the author's hypothesis that the anonymity of traditional peer review might benefit science.
