Assistive Technology - 2 views

  •
Assistive Technology The term assistive technology encompasses a broad range of devices from "low tech" (e.g., pencil grips, splints, paper stabilizers) to "high tech" (e.g., computers, voice synthesizers, braille readers). These devices include the entire range of supportive tools and equipment from adapted spoons to wheelchairs and computer systems for environmental control. Assistive technology certainly includes computers, but it also refers to a number of other types of accommodations and adaptations which enable individuals with disabilities to function more independently. Computers are an important type of assistive technology because they open up so many exciting possibilities for writing, speaking, finding information, or controlling an individual's environment. But computers are not the only avenues to solving problems through technology. There are many low tech (and low cost) solutions for problems that disabilities pose. Examples of inexpensive, low tech solutions include wrist splints, clip boards for holding papers steady, or velcro tabs to keep positioning pads in place.

TAP*it is the first ADA compliant interactive learning station designed to recognize the difference between an arm resting upon the screen and a finger or assistive device intentionally tapping an image. Providing an optimal interface for teaching students with special needs at their own pace, TAP*it reinforces skills that can be transferred to other computer-based learning applications utilizing the Internet, educational software or communication devices. Accessible to students with physical or learning disabilities TAP*it is within reach for students using wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility devices, providing full access to the screen with easy adjustments that adapt to individualized needs. Worries about navigation are eliminated as users can maneuver up to the workstation and have full reach capabilities. Motorized adjustments provide easy accommodations With the touch of a button, the TAP*it platform can move up or down and the 42" interactive LCD panel can be tilted from 0 - 90 degrzees. SpeEdChange: Universal Design for your school computers - 2 views

"I asked, "What are the differences between the approaches at Grand Valley and Stanford, and those at California and Ohio State?" (oops, I'm sorry, "THE Ohio State"). And I asked, "Which school is doing the best job?" I'll leave that question for all of you... but I will suggest that there is a vast difference between providing accessible computing in one place and providing it wherever all other students can access computing. A very big difference."

"Engage switch users with Video. Choose a video from YouTube and using the web apps below convert the video into a switch accessible educational activity. Almost all videos can be made switch accessible, however some videos will only play on their YouTube Channel. If one does not play try another - there are many to choose from! In the web app the videos will play for a short time, then pause, after the switch is pressed the video will continue to play. "

MITS Freedom Stick - 0 views

MITS Freedom Stick 1.0 The MITS Freedom Stick is the result of global collaboration and the leadership of Ira Socol. The design and primary technical work was all done by the Regional Support Center - Scotland North and East. We are extremely grateful for their time, effort, and generosity. Much of the support for our "Americanization," localization, and development of the accessible Firefox Browser came from the Mozilla Corporation, and Mozilla Education. The MITS Freedom Stick is designed to provide students with information and communication access on any computer using a Windows or Linux operating system. When you insert the USB Flash Drive into the computer the LearnApps software should load giving you a menu in the toolbar on the lower-right corner of the screen.

"We provide a simple tool for creating and managing your todo list - all with a bit of fun and flair. Most people keep their todo lists on pieces of paper (which has its upsides!) But many other people have found it useful to have their todo list on their computer as well. They spend much of the day working on their computer, so it is always there - paper can easily get misplaced - or sometimes you forget to bring your list with you when you leave. Making your todo list here has some distinct advantages, such as... you can access it from anywhere you have access to the net. you can share the list with anybody you like just by sending them a link. you and your friend can both add items and cross them off you can save paper (it's a bit "eco"! ;-) less trash to mess your desk or washing machine! (you know you've done this!) you can make as many as you like! No registration needed!"

"These interactive games are extremely flexible and accessible. Using the standard settings, all Nanogames will play like typical computer games. Experienced gamers without disabilities will be able to play them comfortably. However, unlike most computer games, Nanogames are extremely flexible and if the player needs to use alternative controllers, or needs the games to be much slower or easier to play then Nanogames can do that too - easily."

"Accessing Curriculum Through Technology Tools (ACTTT) developed and evaluated an integrated technology tool curriculum to support learning standards and provide access to the general early elementary curriculum. The ACTTT model was developed and tested in kindergarten, first, and second grade classrooms at Westview Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School, and Eastview Elementary School in Canton, Illinois. Participants included children with typical development, children with disabilities, and children at risk for learning failure. Among the technology tools used in the curriculum were the Internet; computers, digital cameras, digital microscopes, video, printers, scanners, and switches; and software used for writing, graphing, mapping, authoring, graphics, and concept development."

Switch-Accessible YouTube Main Page - 0 views

"This is an interface to YouTube designed for people who access their computers via either 2 switches (right arrow to move and left arrow to choose) or a mouse. It allows the user to use two keys/switches to navigate through a list of movies, and watch any or all of them. It currently supports watching movies from a single playlist. Hopefully browsing support will be added in soon. For now, you must use Firefox in order for it to work."

About Tizmos - 1 views

"Like most people, we have a handful of sites we check every time we get on the internet. Checking these sites usually involved navigating to the sites manually or going through the browser's bookmarks/favorites menu. The problem with the latter approach is that you can't access these favorites on different computers unless you install some sort of plugin. With Tizmos, you can open your browser on any computer"
