The Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems (CNH) Program supports interdisciplinary research that examines human and natural system processes and the complex interactions among human and natural systems at diverse scales. Research projects to be supported by CNH must include analyses of four different components: (1) the dynamics of a natural system; (2) the dynamics of a human system; (3) the processes through which the natural system affects the human system; and (4) the processes through which the human system affects the natural system. CNH also supports research coordination networks (CNH-RCNs) designed to facilitate activities that promote future research by broad research communities that will include all four components necessary for CNH funding.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 Minority AIDS Initiative: Service Integration grant program. The purpose of this program is to integrate evidence-based, culturally competent mental and substance use disorder treatment with HIV primary care and prevention services. The population of focus is individuals with a serious mental illness (SMI) or co-occurring disorder (COD) living with or at risk for HIV and/or hepatitis in at-risk populations, including racial and ethnic minority communities. SAMHSA expects that this program will reduce the incidence of HIV and improve overall health outcomes for individuals with SMI or COD. While there has been an overall decline in new HIV infections in the U.S. from 2008-2014, racial and ethnic minority communities continue to experience disproportionate impacts of HIV.

The purpose of the Tanzania Malaria Surveillance and Monitoring (TMSM) Cooperative Agreement is to support the Government of Tanzania (GOT) to reduce the burden of malaria and to move towards the long-term goal of malaria elimination. Under this Cooperative Agreement, USAID/Tanzania will fund malaria surveillance, entomological monitoring, and drug efficacy monitoring. Monitoring will include entomological monitoring, including insecticide resistance monitoring, and therapeutic efficacy monitoring. With the improved epidemiological and entomological data gained during the implementation of this Cooperative Agreement, the Recipient and government partners will be able to refine responses to outbreaks and foci of transmission and adjust IRS and other vector control interventions in zones with differing transmission profiles. The target populations of TMSM are pregnant women and children under five.

The Little Giraffe Foundation is offering research grants in the amount of $5,000 - $10,000 for neonatal research. We invite qualified scientists, doctors, and nurses at universities, hospitals and research institutions, to submit applications for research grants directed at addressing both the long term and immediate health needs caused by premature birth.

The PhRMA Foundation is accepting applications for its Health Outcomes program. Health outcomes research spans a broad spectrum of issues related to healthcare delivery, from studies evaluating the effectiveness of a pharmaceutical intervention to the impact of reimbursement policies on outcomes of care. It also ranges from the development of tools to perform patient-based assessments to analyses of the ways in which results of outcomes research are disseminated to providers or consumers to encourage behavior change.

The annual program is designed to support high-quality studies that contribute to the development of the science of nursing education and promote diversity in research topics, as well as investigators who demonstrate rigor and innovative approaches with the potential to advance the field of nursing education research.

This initiative seeks to optimize innovation, insight and cutting edge conceptual and technological breakthroughs by catalyzing research that emanates from the identified innovative questions in symptom and genomic nursing science. These innovative questions are reflective of broad domains from which more specific novel hypotheses or problems to be solved can be derived.

Self-management is the ability of the individual, in conjunction with family, community, and healthcare professionals, to manage treatments, lifestyle changes, and psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual consequences associated with a chronic illness or condition.  The challenge is that self-management science for chronic conditions must be both age- and culturally-appropriate, embrace health equity, include individuals with chronic conditions and those around them, account for who will benefit from self-management, and incorporate biobehavioral measures and new innovative designs that capture both the psychosocial and economic aspects of a chronic condition.

As the population of older adults continues to increase, the prevalence of diseases and conditions common in aging is expected to rise. Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic lung diseases, dementia, and chronic kidney disease will likely continue to be the greatest sources of morbidity and mortality, as well as the costliest conditions to healthcare systems. However, older Americans infrequently have just one chronic health condition. In 2010, over two-thirds of Medicare beneficiaries had more than one chronic condition, and 14% had 6 or more chronic conditions. Disability and greater care needs associated with these conditions is leading to an increase in residence in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. Healthcare costs will continue to grow, with health-related spending expected to top 20% of gross domestic product by 2025. Also listed under R01

Inadequate end-of-life and palliative care (EOLPC) health literacy is a significant barrier to receiving high-quality care for individuals living with serious, advanced illnesses. Palliative care includes patient and family-centered care that seeks to anticipate, prevent, relieve or reduce disease-related symptoms across the continuum of a patient's illness. Palliative care may integrate the emotional, psychological, social, and physical aspects of care with a focus on enhanced quality of life. Historically, palliative care referred to treatment available to patients at home and enrolled in hospice. More recently, palliative care has become available to acutely ill patients and its meaning has evolved to encompass comprehensive care that may be provided along with disease-specific, life-prolonging treatment. End-of-life care refers to care that meets the patient's medical, physical, psychological, spiritual and social needs when facing an advanced, life-limiting illness. Hospice care is an end-of-life care delivery system that emphasizes comfort through symptom management and psychosocial support without life-prolonging treatment, to enhance the quality of life, increase communication, and decrease care burden for both patients with a limited life expectancy and their families. Through the program, the foundation will award grants of up to $5,000 in support of research projects focused on school nurses' impact on health disparities, students with chronic health conditions, and student safety; innovative models of school nursing practice; cost-benefit analyses of school nursing; and/or the impact of school nurse activities on student health and education outcomes.

The purpose of the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. AREA grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH research programs to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. AREA grants are intended to support small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions, to expose undergraduate and/or graduate students to meritorious research projects, and to strengthen the research environment of the applicant institution.   

NASN is offering a $5,000 research grant through the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) for beginner and experienced nurse researchers for studies to advance nursing science and enhance care. Awardee must be a current member of NASN and a qualified professional school nurse engaged in school nurse practice, education or research. Research studies eligible for this funding focus on school nurse impact on health disparities, students with chronic health conditions, student safety; innovative models of school nursing practice; cost-benefit analysis of school nursing; or impact of school nurse activities related to social determinants of health on student health and education outcomes. The deadline for applications is May 1st.

The purpose of the High Impact, Interdisciplinary Science grants program is to support high impact ideas that may lay the foundation for new fields of investigation within the mission of NIDDK. The interdisciplinary approach encouraged by this FOA is envisioned to generate a community research resource for the broader community, which may include discovery-based or hypothesis-generating science. The interdisciplinary research team should be able to provide an integrative plan of working together to effectively address the complex challenge at hand. This program will support research projects that accelerate critical breakthroughs, early and applied research on cutting-edge technologies, and new approaches to improve the synergy and interactions among multi- and interdisciplinary research teams, including sharing of data and other resources to further advance research in this area. The Ohio Affiliate of  Prevent Blindness is accepting applications for its 2018 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness - to prevent blindness and preserve sight.  Grants will be awarded for the summer 2018 session.  Awards will range from $3000-$5000 depending upon the availability of funds. The deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants must be post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a master's or doctorate program during the summer of 2018, female, citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and conducting their research with a recognized academic institution in the State of Ohio. Applications from diverse fields in the health sciences including, but not limited to ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, genetics, public health, nutrition, gerontology, and bioengineering, are appropriate to the goals of this fellowship award.
