OPERA America's Innovation Grants support the implementation of innovative projects in opera's most important areas of practice, including artistic vitality, audience experience, organizational effectiveness, and community connections. The program enables companies to increase their investment in experimentation and innovation and contribute to field-wide learning. Grants are intended to support projects that (a) represent  an effort new to the field; (b) adaptations or applications of strategies that have been implemented elsewhere but are new to the applicant company or its community; and (c) refinements or enhancements to proven organizational strategies that merit continued development. OPERA America will assist with evaluation and documentation and help disseminate lessons learned from the projects.

The Catherine Doctorow Prize for Music will be a bi-annual award of $15,000 to a composer for the creation of a new work for voice and chamber ensemble of between 3 and 10 acoustic instruments (some guidelines will apply) and between 15 and 30 minutes in length. Given the inherent challenges of writing idiomatically for the human voice, a goal of the competition is to successfully enlarge the repertoire of works for voice and instruments. The prizewinner's completed work will be premiered under the aegis of Gotham Chamber Opera.

The University of Chicago Library invites applications for short-term research fellowships for the summer of 2014. Any visiting researcher residing more than 100 miles from Chicago, and whose project requires on-site consultation of University of Chicago Library collections, primarily archives, manuscripts or printed materials in the Special Collections Research Center, is eligible. Support for beginning scholars is a priority of the program. Applications in the fields of late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century physics or physical chemistry, or nineteenth-century classical opera, will receive special consideration. Awards will be made based on an evaluation of the research proposal and the applicant's ability to complete it successfully.  Applicants should explain why the project cannot be conducted without on-site access to the original materials and to what extent University of Chicago Library collections are central to the research.  Up to $3,000 of support will be awarded to help cover projected travel, living, and research expenses.  Applications from women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged.

The Robert L. Platzman Memorial Fellowships, established by bequest of George W. Platzman (1920-2008), Professor Emeritus in Geophysical Sciences at the University, are named in memory of George's brother Robert Platzman (1918-1973), who was Professor of Chemistry and Physics and worked at the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago in the 1940s. The program provides up to $3,000 for visiting researchers working on projects that require on-site consultation of University of Chicago Library collections, primarily archives, manuscripts or printed materials in the Special Collections Research Center. The funds can be used for travel, living and research expenses. Support for beginning scholars is a priority of the program, as are projects that cannot be conducted without onsite access to the original materials and where University of Chicago collections are central to the research. Special consideration will be given to applications in the fields of late 19th or early 20th-century physics or physical chemistry, or 19th-century classical opera.

In 1998, to honor the centenary of the birth of Lenya, the foundation established the annual Lotte Lenya Competition, a unique international contest that bridges the worlds of opera/operetta and Broadway musical theater. More than a vocal competition, the contest emphasizes wide-ranging repertoire and the acting of songs and arias within a dramatic context. The 2018 competition is now inviting exceptionally talented young singer/actors who excel in a wide range of musical theater styles to compete for top prizes of $20,000, $15,000, and $10,000.
