The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Cutting-Edge Basic Research Award (CEBRA) is designed to foster highly innovative or conceptually creative research related to the etiology, pathophysiology, prevention, or treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). It supports high-risk and potentially high-impact research that is underrepresented or not included in NIDA's current portfolio. The proposed research should: (1) test an innovative and significant hypothesis for which there are scant precedent or preliminary data and which, if confirmed, would transform current thinking; and/or (2) develop, and/or adapt, revolutionary techniques or methods for addiction research or that show promising future applicability to SUD research.

The Defense Sciences Office (DSO) at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative research proposals for the development and deployment of automated tools to assign Confidence Scores (CSs) to different kinds of Social and Behavioral Science (SBS) research results and claims. CSs are quantitative measures that should enable someone to understand the degree to which a particular claim or result is likely to be reproducible and/or replicable. These tools will assign explainable CSs with a reliability that is equal to, or better than, the best current human expert methods, and will enable a consumer of SBS research to quickly calibrate the level of confidence in the Reproducibility and Replicability (R&R) of a given SBS result or claim. Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems. Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

The goal of this FOA is to support short courses geared to behavioral and social scientists who have existing expertise in aging research and can make research contributions in Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) with additional knowledge about the disease and related research resources. Fields of behavioral and social science research relevant for this FOA are health economics, labor economics, health services research, healthcare policy, public policy, demography, sociology, social epidemiology, psychology, and social neuroscience. Priority areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the following: dementia care; dementia caregiver research; cognitive and dementia epidemiology; behavioral and social pathways of AD/ADRD; role of social, contextual, environmental, and institutional factors in AD/ADRD; early psychological changes preceding AD/ADRD onset; prevention of AD/ADRD; disparities in AD/ADRD or dementia-related outcomes; and research resources and methods for studying the determinants and impact of AD/ADRD.

Due to the effects of COVID-19 on all facets of American life, the foundation is changing its immediate priorities for Letters of Inquiry for its upcoming deadline. Under the new priority, the foundation will only consider LOIs that satisfy the following criteria: research so timely and time-sensitive that the project must start before April 1, 2021; or research that analyzes social, political, economic, or psychological disruptions resulting from the coronavirus crisis affecting social and living conditions in the United States. All LOIs must focus on issues related to the foundation's core program areas and special initiatives, which include: Behavioral Economics - Research that uses insights and methods from psychology, economics, sociology, political science, and other social sciences to examine and improve social and living conditions. Decision-Making and Human Behavior in Context - Research on decision making across the social sciences that examines causes, consequences, processes, or context from a behavioral or alternative perspective. Future of Work - Projects that examine a wide range of causal factors that may have depressed wages of low-education workers, from foreign outsourcing and immigration to the decline of unions and technological change. Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration - Research investigating multidisciplinary perspectives on questions stemming from the significant changes in the racial, ethnic, and immigrant-origin composition of the U.S. population. Social, Political, and Economic Inequality - Research examining the factors that contribute to existing inequities; the extent to which these inequalities affect social, political, and economic institutions and outcomes; and how they influence the lives of individuals and families, including equality of access and opportunity, social mobility, and civic mobilization and representation, as well as how advantage and disadvantage are transmitted within and across generations.

The purpose of this FOA is encourage applications that seek to examine processes of recovery and relapse in the treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. Applications high in innovation and significance are highly encouraged that address the following potential topics: 1) defining recovery; 2) Examining new and innovative methods to examine precipitants of relapse; 3) Understanding mechanisms of mutual help and recovery; 4) Evaluating recovery systems of care; and 5) Examining processes of extended treatment for AUD

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages R21 grant applications for research that will employ rigorous scientific methods to test theoretically derived hypotheses to increase understanding of the science of drug use prevention within diverse populations and settings and across the lifespan. The FOA seeks applications that encompass investigations of cognitive, behavioral, and social processes as they relate to: 1) development of novel prevention approaches; 2) efficacy and effectiveness of prevention interventions or programs; 3) processes that optimize the selection, integration, implementation and sustainability of science-based prevention, including systems-level and health economic factors; and 4) methodologies appropriate for studying complex aspects of prevention science.

 The objective of this FOA is to support research in the discovery and characterization of the full spectrum of human-specific non-coding functional genomic elements across brain regions, cell types, and developmental time periods to elucidate their role(s) in the molecular pathophysiology of mental illness. It is expected that projects under this FOA will apply unbiased genome-wide approaches, computational methods, and experimental assays to identify and characterize functional genomic elements in both healthy and diseased human brains to correlate findings with development of mental illnesses and outcomes relevant to brain function and dysfunction.

The NIMH Exploratory/Developmental Grant program supports exploratory and high-risk research projects that fall within the NIMH mission by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. These studies may involve considerable risk but may lead to a breakthrough or to the development of novel techniques, agents, methods, measures, models, or strategies, or to the generation of pilot or feasibility data. The preliminary work from these studies could lead to a major impact on biomedical, behavioral, or clinical mental health research, or on the delivery of mental health care.

The American Psychological Foundation is accepting applications from early-career psychologists conducting research in the area of early intervention for and treatment of serious emotional disturbance in children. Through its John and Polly Sparks Early Career grant program, the foundation will award a single grant of $18,000 to an early-career psychologist in support of scientifically based research and programs that could provide models for broad-based applications across the country. The grant is meant to encourage the researcher to devote his/her career to methods of intervention for and treatment of serious emotional disturbance in children. Although APF does not consider institutional indirect costs or overhead costs, the recipiens may use the grant to cover the direct administrative costs of their proposed project. To be eligible, applicants must be a psychologist with an EdD, PsyD, or PhD from an accredited university and be no more than seven years postdoctoral.

The purpose of this FOA is to promote the integration of experimental, analytic, and theoretical capabilities for large-scale analysis of neural systems and circuits. This FOA seeks applications for exploratory research studies that use new and emerging methods for large scale recording and manipulation of neural circuits across multiple brain regions. Applications should propose to elucidate the contributions of dynamic circuit activity to a specific behavioral or neural system. Applications should seek to understand circuits of the central nervous system by systematically controlling stimuli and/or behavior while actively recording and/or manipulating relevant dynamic patterns of neural activity and by measuring the resulting behaviors and/or perceptions. Studies should incorporate rich information on cell-types, on circuit functionality and connectivity, and should be performed in conjunction with sophisticated analysis of complex, ethologically relevant behaviors. Applications should propose teams of investigators that seek to cross boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration by bridging fields and linking theory and data analysis to experimental design. Exploratory studies supported by this FOA are intended to develop experimental capabilities and quantitative, theoretical frameworks in preparation for a future competition for larger-scale, multi-component, Team-Research Circuit Programs (U19) awards.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIGMS R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. The purpose of the Research Fellowships Program is to build research capacity by providing support to highly qualified individuals, including those who are individuals with disabilities, to conduct research on the rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities. Fellows must conduct original research in an area authorized by section 204 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. Section 204 authorizes research, demonstration projects, training, and related activities, the purposes of which are to develop methods, procedures, and rehabilitation technology that maximize the full inclusion and integration into society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, especially individuals with the most severe disabilities, and to improve the effectiveness of services authorized under the Act. The Russell Sage Foundation (RSF) has long had the mission to improve social and living conditions in the United States. It pursues this goal by supporting outstanding research in the social sciences that explores how social, economic, and political factors affect the lives of Americans and their children. Support of such research remains the Foundation's core focus. RSF also has a long history of encouraging new scientific advances to strengthen the methods, data, and theoretical core of the social sciences. Two recent intellectual developments have prompted RSF to launch a special research initiative that integrates knowledge from the biological and social sciences. First, there has been a paradigm shift in the life sciences, spurred by the realization that many biological processes, rather than being fixed, immutable mechanisms that consign people to particular life outcomes, are instead fluid, dynamic responses to features of the social and physical environments humans inhabit. Second, this shift led researchers to launch interdisciplinary studies that seek to integrate approaches from the social and biological sciences, recognizing the potential for a deeper understanding of how social inequalities are initiated, maintained, and transmitted from one generation to the next.

The Genetics or Epigenetics of Substance Use Disorders Avenir Award program supports early stage investigators proposing highly innovative studies that open new areas of research for the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. These may be novel methods or approaches that can potentially be applied to the analysis of the genetics or epigenetics of addiction. Investigators outside the field of addiction interested in applying their novel approaches to the genetics or epigenetics of addiction are encouraged to apply. The award will support those in an early stage of their career who may lack the preliminary data required for an R01 grant, but who propose high impact research and who show promise of being tomorrow's leaders in the field of genetics or epigenetics of substance use disorders.

Through the council's COVID-19 Rapid-Response Grants program, innovative research projects that deploy remote research methods to shed light on both the short- and potential long-term effects of COVID-19 across a range of issues will be supported, including "social distancing" and virtual social interaction; governance and democracy; public trust and (dis)information; social inequality and the pandemic's disproportionate effects by race and ethnicity; the lessons of past disasters, and responses to them, for the present; the role of religious ideas, practices, and institutions in responding to the pandemic; the workplace and labor markets; technology, surveillance, and ethics; and the uses of, and the limits to, modeling in responses to the pandemic's effects and in scenario planning.

The Science of Science & Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy. The program funds research to develop models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can be applied in the science policy decision making process and concern the use and allocation of scarce scientific resources. For example, research proposals may develop behavioral and analytical conceptualizations, frameworks or models that have applications across the broad array of science and innovation policy challenges. Proposals also may develop methodologies to analyze science, technology and innovation data, and to usefully convey that information to a variety of audiences. Proposals that create and improve science, engineering and innovation data, including the design of new metrics and indicators, particularly proposals that demonstrate the viability of collecting and analyzing data on knowledge generation and innovation in organizations, are encouraged.

NASA is soliciting investigations lasting no more than one year that provide innovative approaches to any of the risks and gaps contained in the Integrated Research Plan (http://humanresearchroadmap.nasa.gov) of the Human Research Program. NASA is also soliciting novel research ideas that might not be directly aligned with HRP's identified risks from new investigators who have not received funding from NASA or the National Space Biomedical Research Institute in the last ten years.
