    Wishing to advance research into the health benefits - physical, mental and emotional - of physical activity and sports, the Weiss Research Endowment has been established for ACSM students studying in this field. One project will be funded for applied rather than for basic research, with the intent of applying the results to programs involving physical activity and sports. The psychological and emotional benefits of physical activity are of particular importance to the benefactors of this endowment, Drs. Raymond and Rosalee Weiss, and proposals addressing those issues will be given priority. One reward of $1,500 is available.

Theoretical Nuclear Physics - 0 views

    The nuclear theory program encompasses the structure and reactions of nuclei, and of hadrons in few-nucleon and nuclear environments, and the quark/gluon substructure expressed by QCD.  Supported research includes contributions to broad theoretical advances as well as model building and applications to experimental programs at facilities such as NSCL, RHIC and Jefferson Laboratory, and to astrophysical phenomena. This includes formulating new approaches for theoretical, computational, and experimental research that explore the fundamental laws of physics and the behavior of physical systems; formulating quantitative hypotheses; exploring and analyzing the implications of such hypotheses analytically and computationally; and, in some cases, interpreting the results of experiments. Some awards are co-funded with other programs in the Physics Division and in other divisions.

APA Division 38: Graduate Student Awards - 0 views

    Division 38 of the American Psychological Association is sponsoring five graduate student awards to support new research. Each award is for $1500. The awards are distributed in the following three categories. STUDIES IN GENERAL HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY - 2 AWARDS Understanding the etiology, promotion and maintenance of health; Prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of physical illness; Psychological, social, emotional and behavioral factors in physical illness; and Health care systems and health policy. RESEARCH IN CHILD HEALTH PSYCHOLOGY - 1 AWARD Studies addressing one of the topics outlined in the items above under General Psychology directed at a sample comprised primarily or exclusively of children or adolescents. This award is conferred in memory of Lizette Peterson, a former Health Psychology editor and Division 38 member. RESEARCH ADDRESSING HEALTH DISPARITIES - 2 AWARDS Defined as "differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population group" (National Institutes of Health). In particular, these awards are intended to support research focusing on various health conditions that are more prevalent, serious, or specific to disadvantaged and medically underserved groups, or on healthcare inequities relevant to these groups, specifically, ethnic minorities and socio-economically disadvantaged individuals in rural and urban areas.

    As defined in the DD Act of 2000, the term "developmental disabilities" means a severe, chronic disability of an individual that is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or combination of mental and physical impairments that are manifested before the individual attains age 22 and are likely to continue indefinitely. Developmental disabilities result in substantial limitations in three or more of the following functional areas: self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living and economic self-sufficiency. The DD Act of 2000 identifies a number of significant findings, including: Disability is a natural part of the human experience that does not diminish the right of individuals with developmental disabilities to enjoy the opportunity for independence, productivity, integration and inclusion into the community. Individuals whose disabilities occur during their developmental period frequently have severe disabilities that are likely to continue indefinitely. Individuals with developmental disabilities often require lifelong specialized services and assistance, provided in a coordinated and culturally competent manner by many agencies, professionals, advocates, community representatives and others to eliminate barriers and to meet the needs of such individuals and their families. The DD Act of 2000 also promotes the best practices and policies presented below: Individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with the most severe developmental disabilities, are capable of achieving independence, productivity, integration and inclusion into the community, and often require the provision of services, supports and other assistance to achieve such. Increasing the Implementation of Evidence-Based Cancer Survivorship Interventions to In... - 0 views

    A cancer survivor is a person diagnosed with cancer, from the time of diagnosis throughout the person’s lifespan. As of 2008, nearly 12 million cancer survivors were living in the United States; this number is expected to increase to 18 million in 2020. Cancer survivors have long-term adverse physical and psychosocial effects from their diagnosis and treatment, and have a greater risk for additional cancer diagnoses compared with persons without a cancer history. Cancer survivors commonly report negative behavioral, medical, and health care access issues that may contribute to poor long-term medical and psychosocial outcomes. An analysis of over 45,000 U.S. cancer survivors showed that: 1) 15% of cancer survivors continue to use tobacco; 2) 20-25% do not receive recommended cancer screenings; 3) 31% do not engage in any leisure time physical activity; 4) 40 to 50% do not receive flu or pneumonia vaccines; 5) 60% do not have a summary of their cancer treatment; and 6) 25% do not have any instructions (written or oral) for their treatment or follow-up care . CDC’s National Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (NCCCP) supports collaborative cancer control and prevention efforts in all states, the District of Columbia, tribal organizations, territories, and Pacific Island jurisdictions to address the cancer burden in their jurisdictions. In 2010, NCCCP developed six priorities areas of focus for the greatest public health impact; one of the six priorities is to address the public health needs of cancer survivors. The purpose of this FOA is to implement a broad set of evidence-based survivorship strategies in a subset of NCCCP grantees that will have the short-term results of increasing knowledge of cancer survivor needs, increasing survivor knowledge of treatment and follow-up care, and increasing provider knowledge of guidelines pertaining to treatment of cancer.     The mission of the Infinite Hero Foundation is to combat the most difficult front-line issues-mental and physical-facing returning military heroes and their families. The Foundation provides grants of up to $100,000 to nonprofit organizations offering innovative and effective programs or treatments to active duty service members, veterans, and/or military families for service-related mental and physical injuries.     The Science of Science & Innovation Policy (SciSIP) program supports research designed to advance the scientific basis of science and innovation policy. Research funded by the program thus develops, improves and expands models, analytical tools, data and metrics that can be applied in the science policy decision making process. For example, research proposals may develop behavioral and analytical conceptualizations, frameworks or models that have applications across a broad array of SciSIP challenges, including the relationship between broader participation and innovation or creativity.     Integrated Earth Systems (IES) is a program in the Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) that focuses on the continental, terrestrial and deep Earth subsystems of the whole Earth system.  The overall goal of the program is to provide opportunity for collaborative, multidisciplinary research into the operation, dynamics and complexity of Earth systems at a budgetary scale between that of a typical project in the EAR Division's disciplinary programs and larger scale initiatives at the Directorate or Foundation level.     Each ACT Fellowship will provide up to $220,000 for up to thirty-three months in support of a systematic and sustained course of study in an empirical science such as physics, psychology, biology, genetics, cognitive science, neuroscience, or sociology. Acceptable courses of study might include a plan to audit undergraduate and graduate-level courses, a plan to spend time in residence at a research lab, or a plan to earn a degree in an empirical science. This iteration of the program also will permit applicants to request that up to one year of the ACT Fellowship be used to support a small-scale pilot scientific research project that improves or enhances the capacity, skill, and talent of the fellow to investigate the above-described Big Questions. Fellows may undertake their study at their home institution or another institution. All fellows must have a faculty mentor in their cross-training discipline.
