People with severe mental illness (SMI) die from the same causes as those in the general population, e.g., heart disease, diabetes, cancer, stroke, and pulmonary disease. However, these diseases are more common in people with SMI and lead to earlier death. The modifiable health risk factors that contribute to these diseasessmoking, obesity, hypertension, metabolic disorder, substance use, low physical activity, poor fitness and dietare also more common and have an earlier onset in people with SMI. Side effects of psychiatric medications, which may include weight gain and metabolic disorder, add to these health risks. Effective interventions to reduce these common modifiable health risk factors exist for the general population, however, they are generally unavailable to people with SMI and evidence is sparse on how to bring them to this population. This FOA will support R01 grants of up to five years for rigorous effectiveness testing of innovative services interventions designed to reduce the prevalence and magnitude of common modifiable health risk factors related to shortened lifespan in adults with severe mental illness (SMI), as well as in children and youth with serious emotional disturbances (SED).

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Questioning (LGBTQ) victims of intimate partner, domestic, and/or dating violence do not have consistent access to culturally competent services to prevent and address such violence. Domestic/intimate partner violence is a significant health problem among LGBTQ populations and has serious physical health, mental health, and social consequences for its victims, their families, the LGBTQ communities, and society-at-large. The intent of this Family Violence Prevention and Services Capacity-Building Demonstration grant program is to expand the capacity of both “mainstream” domestic violence organizations and LGBTQ-specific organizations to more effectively identify and address the unique needs of LGBTQ intimate partner violence victims. The successful applicant will be expected to identify and inform LGBTQ-specific prevention and intervention strategies, including screening and on-going assessment that can be replicated in local domestic violence and LGBTQ programs. Many service providers throughout the United States struggle to understand the complexities associated with identifying, serving, and supporting LGBTQ populations.

The Safe Havens: Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Program (Supervised Visitation Program) provides an opportunity for communities to support supervised visitation and safe exchange of children in situations involving domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, child abuse, or stalking. Research has shown that the risk of violence is often greater for victims of domestic violence and their children after separation from an abusive situation. Even after separation, batterers often use visitation and exchange of children as an opportunity to inflict additional emotional, physical, and/or psychological abuse on victims and their children. Visitation and exchange services provided through the Supervised Visitation Program should reflect a clear understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking; the impact of domestic violence on children; and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.

The primary objective of this FOA is to stimulate innovative Convergent Neuroscience (CN) approaches to establish causal and/or probabilistic linkages across contiguous levels of analysis (e.g., gene, molecule, cell, circuit, system, behavior) in an explanatory model of psychopathology. In particular, applicants should focus on how specific constituent biological processes at one level of analysis contribute to quantifiable properties at other levels, either directly or as emergent phenomena.  Although not required, it is preferable that applications link at least three levels of analysis and include an emphasis on genetics. The projects under this FOA will develop novel methods, theories, and approaches through a CN team framework, bringing together highly synergistic inter/transdisciplinary teams from neuroscience and "orthogonal" fields (e.g., data/computational science, physics, engineering, mathematics, and environmental sciences). Successful teams will combine, expand upon, or develop conceptual frameworks and theoretical approaches, and build explanatory computational models that connect contiguous levels of analysis. Such frameworks, theories, and computational explanatory models should be validated through experimental approaches to elucidate biological underpinnings of complex behavioral (including cognitive and affective) outcomes in psychopathology. Additionally, a goal of this program is to advance research in CN by creating a shared community framework of resources which may be used by the broader research community to further research, as such, successful team will have robust plan for sharing data and other resources.

The Society for Personality and Social Psychology has established a fund devoted to increasing diversity within personality and social psychology. As part of this initiative, eligible undergraduate students are invited to apply for an award that will cover the expense of registering for the SPSP annual conference. The SPSP Diversity and Climate Committee will also host a reception for award recipients during the conference (time and location to be announced). Undergraduate award winners are encouraged to attend this reception. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in psychology or be a graduate of such a program and currently working in areas related to psychology. Preference will be given to currently enrolled undergraduates.  Not have received this award in the past.  Be a member of an underrepresented group in social/personality psychology (these groups include, but are not necessarily limited to, ethnic and racial minorities; first-generation college students; lesbian, gay and bisexual students; transgendered students; and students with a physical disability).

Weiss Research and Programs Innovation Grant is also available for any program that falls within APF's priority areas.

The Lesbian Health Fund (LHF), a program of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality, was established in 1992 to define, study, and educate lesbians and their health care providers about lesbian health issues. LHF's mission is to improve the health of lesbians, other sexual minority women (SMW) and their families through research. Research areas include: Understanding social, family, and interpersonal influences as sources of stress or support Eliminating inequalities in health care, including barriers to care, and improving quality of care and utilization rates Development and testing of interventions to address mental and physical health needs of lesbians and other SMW, including but not limited to depression, identity related issues, eating disorders, substance abuse, obesity, cancer risks, cardiovascular disease and sexually transmitted infections Sexual and reproductive health, including family & parenting issues The deadlines for receipt of applications are May 15 and October 15.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

Operating as a field of interest fund of the Denver Foundation, the Colorado Health Access Fund works to improve healthcare access and outcomes for underserved populations in the state by reducing barriers to treatment, supporting community-based solutions, and  disseminating project successes and obstacles, all with the goal of improving industry best practices. In support of this mission, the fund currently is accepting applications from behavioral health organizations working to increase access to treatment for those with mental health and substance use disorders. Grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded to programs, collaborations, and capital improvements that help improve health care for those who have an identified behavioral health issue concurrent with an additional barrier to health equity such as homelessness, a lack of health insurance, a physical disability, or a primary language other than English. Grants may be awarded for up to three consecutive years.

Established in 1931, the Rockwell Fund seeks to promote positive community change in the greater Houston area. To that end, the fund is accepting applications from community-based providers and health centers working to increase the availability of and access to physical and behavioral healthcare for uninsured and underinsured populations; advance an innovative approach to community health; address the social determinants of health; and/or leverage existing resources to expand their reach. For organizations or programs focused on substance abuse, the fund is interested in interventions that target the co-occurring conditions of mental health and substance abuse.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions to propose creative and innovative institutional research career development programs which prepare clinically-trained vision scientists for independent research careers. This initiative is intended to expand and strengthen the community of investigators engaged in clinical research. Such an increase in the number of well-trained clinical researchers is necessary to achieve a pool of scientists with contemporary, multidisciplinary expertise able to leverage recent advances in ocular genetics, therapeutics, bioengineering, and bio-behavioral research in order to enhance patient treatment and to increase scientific momentum in these fields. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) allows appointment of Scholars (K12) proposing a separate ancillary study to an existing trial or proposing to gain research experience in a clinical trial led by another investigator, as part of their research and career development. Applications supported by this FOA that meet the NIH definition of a clinical trial (see NOT-OD-15-015) must also fulfill the NIH requirements for either a mechanistic or minimal risk trial. A mechanistic trial is designed to understand a biological or behavioral process, the pathophysiology of a disease, or the mechanism of action of an intervention. A minimal risk trial is one in which the probability and magnitude of harm or discomfort anticipated in the research are not greater in and of themselves than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests. A proposed research career development program that includes a clinical trial that is not a mechanistic trial and/or involves a level of risk beyond that defined as minimal, will not be supported.

The purpose of Horses and Humans Research Foundation (HHRF) is to fund research that investigates the therapeutic effects of horses on humans. The broad research agenda includes basic research, as well as clinical studies that will ultimately impact physical and mental health and the quality of life for people with disabilities who are involved with equine-assisted activities/therapies (EAA/T). Basic research collects foundational data used to develop or refine theories. Through investment in rigorous research, Horses and Humans Research Foundation will serve as a catalyst to advance knowledge of horses and their potential to impact on the health and wellness of people. The primary goal is to support, promote and fund scientific research that explores the claimed, yet unsubstantiated benefits of equine-assisted activities and therapies, leading to the discovery of the most effective methods and techniques for conducting thousands of existing and future programs. The secondary goal is to educate the public (including parents, donors, insurance companies and physicians) on research findings so that equine-assisted activities become more accessible to those in need.
