OARS funding History

The Mercurians have established two initiatives to support research in the history of communication technologies. Both are intended for new or junior scholars. The first is a prize for the best article published during the previous two years in any peer-reviewed journal. The second is a travel grant to defray the costs of travel and housing to use a research collection. The prize and the grant will be awarded in alternating years. We presented the first two travel grants-of US$1,000 each-during the 2011 SHOT annual meeting in Cleveland.  The first article prize has been deferred until 2014 (see below). Rationale One of the Mercurians' missions is to encourage scholarship in the history of communication technologies. There is no prize or travel grant program (either within or outside SHOT) that we are aware of dedicated to supporting scholarship on the history of communication technologies. While the history of communication technology literature is vast and always growing, the quality of the research effort or resulting publication too often falls short of scholarly expectations. The Mercurians are hopeful that these new publication and travel awards will help to both increase and raise the level of new scholarship concerning the history of communication technologies.

The Baird Society Resident Scholar Program was established to support the study of some of SI Libraries' most unique and valuable holdings: its Special Collections. Stipends of $3,500 per month for up to six months are available for individuals working on a topic relating to these collections. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Smithsonian during the award period. While the Libraries' extensive general collections may be used to support scholars' research, the focus of their projects must center around Special Collections. These collections are located in in Washington, DC and New York City, and include:

The Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology Resident Scholar Program, supported by The Dibner Fund, awards stipends of $3,500.00 per month for up to six months for individuals working on a topic relating to the history of science and technology who can make substantial use of collections in the Dibner Library. Historians, librarians, doctoral students, and post-doctoral scholars are welcome to apply. Scholars must be in residence at the Dibner Library during the award period. Scholars wanting to do research in other areas of SI Libraries' Special Collections should apply for the Baird Society Resident Scholar Program.

The M. Louise Carpenter Gloeckner, M.D. Summer Research Fellowship is offered annually by the Drexel University College of Medicine Archives and Special Collections on Women in Medicine. A $4,000 stipend is awarded to one applicant for research completed in residence at the Archives and Special Collections. The term of the fellowship is no less than four to six weeks to begin on or after June 1. The deadline for applications is March 1, annually. A short essay summarizing research findings is required upon completion of the fellowship. This essay may be published in a University publication or online via the Archives website. This fellowship was established in memory of M. Louise Carpenter Gloeckner, M.D. by her husband Frederick Gloeckner in recognition of her key leadership role in the medical profession. This is a competitive annual fellowship open to scholars, students and general researchers. In addition to materials related to the history of the Woman's Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania, the collections have particular strengths in the history of women in medicine, nursing, medical missionaries, the American Medical Women's Association, American Women's Hospital Service, and other women in medicine organizations. The majority of the collections fall within the period 1850 to the present.

The Swiss Society for the History of Medicine and Science invites applications for the Henry-E.-Sigerist-Prize for the promotion of young scholars in the history of medicine and science. Deadline for application: March 31 2013 The prize was founded in 1967 by Mr. and Mrs. Guggenheim-Schnurr from Basel in order to award outstanding young scholars in the field of history of medicine and science. It is conferred by a jury on behalf of the Swiss Society of the History of Medicine and Sciences.

Fellowships support individuals pursuing advanced research that is of value to humanities scholars, general audiences, or both. Recipients usually produce articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources in the humanities. Projects may be at any stage of development.

Each year the Flaherty offers fellowships to graduate students and emerging and mid-career filmmakers and media professionals. The fellowship program is led by an academic who has attended previous Flaherty Seminars and is designed to further your knowledge of cinema through participation in an array of unique activities. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty fellows take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance, including programmers, writers, and academics and participate in a mentorship program. The program is rigorous and rewarding; Fellows arrive on campus a day before the Seminar begins to learn about the history of the Seminar, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss each other's films, by way of an informal Fellows' film screening. Fellows will be able to return home with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

Thanks to generous funding from the Elios Society, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to announce the second of a three-year Library Research Fellowship Program to support the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento. The Program provides a limited number of fellowships ranging from $500 to $4,000 to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the awards and is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the doctoral through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection's strengths who reside outside a 150 mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between one week and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the second year will be tenable from July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014.

The Moakley Archive and Institute at Suffolk University is now accepting applications for the 2013-2014 Moakley Research Travel Grant. The grant supports archival research to be conducted at the Moakley Archive and Institute from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014. Awards of up to $1500 may be used to underwrite travel, lodging, copying and other research expenses. Primary consideration will be given to projects involving the substantive study of issues related to Suffolk University, the career of Congressman John Joseph Moakley, and the study of Congress. Proposals should be aimed at a discrete end product such as a book, dissertation, thesis, article, documentary, film, exhibit, Web site or social networking site.

The Department of Special Collections at Washington University Libraries St. Louis, Missouri is happy to announce that this year's travel grant competition is now open. The Application Deadline is March 15, 2013. Travel must occur between May 15, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Travel reimbursement grants of up to $1000 are available to faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and independent scholars who would like to use our collections for research. Funds may be used for transportation, food, lodging, and photocopying. Applicants must reside at least 50 miles from St. Louis.

The Southern Historical Collection (SHC) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is accepting applications for five visiting scholar awards in fall 2013: * Joel Williamson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1200 award) For projects examining African Americans or race relations in the American South * Guion Griffis Johnson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award) For projects examining women in the American South * John Eugene and Barbara Hilton Cay Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award) For projects examining the literary culture or traditions of the American South * J. Carlyle Sitterson Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award) For projects examining the antebellum period in the American South * Parker-Dooley Visiting Scholar Grant ($1000 award) For projects examining North Carolina's history

The research remit of the BIAA covers Turkey and the Black Sea. BIAA research engages with Turkey as a crossroads, Turkey's interactions with the Black Sea region and its other neighbours as well as Turkey as a distinctive creative and cultural hub in a global and neighbourhood perspective. The overall focus of applications should be on History, Society and Culture. The BIAA has primary experience and resources, including a first-class library in Ankara, as an archaeological and historical research centre. It prioritizes research projects with a historical dimension, even when the prime focus is on contemporary Turkey or climate issues. In line with the mission of the BIAA as a centre of excellence for archaeological research, substantial funds will be set aside for selected field projects running over a number of years. Currently three or four projects of this type are supported. Applications for funding should fit within the five Strategic Research Initiatives (SRI) which define the current shape of BIAA research policy: * Climate and its historical and current impact * Migration, Minorities and regional identities * Religion and politics in historical perspective * Habitat and Settlement in prehistoric, historical and environmental perspective * Cultural heritage, society and the economy Proposals may relate to all historical periods up to contemporary Turkey.

The UCLA Film & Television Archive's Research and Study Center (ARSC) is pleased to announce the ARSC Visiting Researcher Stipend for 2013. One stipend in the amount of $3,000 is available this year. The purpose of the stipend is to: *Support the work of scholars by awarding funding to offset expenses associated with a research visit to UCLA Film & Television Archive. *Encourage research access to moving image collections held by UCLA Film & Television Archive.

The Bertha Klausner Research Fellowship is funded through the generosity of Ms. Klausner's family and friends and is intended to provide research support for a recognized scholar. The Fellowship also is intended to facilitate the use of the Bertha Klausner Papers and other archival collections held by the American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming.

The Benard L. Majewski Research Fellowship is funded by an endowment provided through the generosity of Mrs. Thelma Majewski and is intended to provide research suport for a recognized scholar in the history of economic geology and to facilitate the Fellow's use of archival collections in the American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming.

The Joseph M. Carey Research Fellowship is funded by a generous donation by the Carey Family and is intended to provide research support for a recognized scholar in the area of Wyoming and Western history and to facilitate the use of archival collections at theAmerican Heritage Center (AHC), University of Wyoming. The AHC does hold a collection of Carey Family Papers.

In honor of James P. Danky's long service to print culture scholarship, the Center for the History of Print and Digital Culture, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Historical Society, is again offering its annual short-term research fellowship with an emphasis on print culture history. The Danky Fellowship provides $1000 in funds for one individual planning a trip to carry out research using the collections of the Wisconsin Historical Society (please see details of the collections at http://www.wisconsinhistory.org). Grant money may be used for travel to the WHS, costs of copying pertinent archival resources, and living expenses while pursuing research here. If in residence during the semester, the recipient will be expected to give a presentation as part of the colloquium series of the Center for the History of Print and Digital Culture (http://www.slis.wisc.edu/chpchome.htm). Preference will be given to: -proposals undertaking research in print culture history -research likely to lead to publication -researchers early in their career -researchers from outside Madison

The Neu-Whitrow Bibliography Prize will be awarded to a graduate student, postgraduate fellow, independent scholar, or early career professional (professor, librarian, bibliographer, archivist, or curator). The primary goal is to encourage the development of bibliographies and archival finding aids.The prize commemorates the centenary of theIsis Bibliography of History of Science, which was started in 1913 by George Sarton. After Sarton, two bibliographers, John Neu at the University of Wisconsin, and Magda Whitrow at Imperial College, London, carried on Sarton's legacy. This prize recognizes the efforts of those two bibliographers for the work that they did to support history of science scholarship around the world.

The Bakken (Minneapolis, MN) awards short-term fellowships and travel grants to scholars and artists to support research using The Bakken's library and artifact collections. The collections address the history of electricity and magnetism (with a focus on their roles in the life sciences and medicine) and include approximately 11,000 books, journals, and manuscripts, and 2,200 instruments, medical devices, and other artifacts. The awards are to be used to help defray the expenses of travel, subsistence and other direct costs of conducting research at The Bakken for researchers who must travel some distance and pay for temporary lodging in the Twin Cities in order to conduct research at The Bakken. Visiting research fellowships are awarded up to a maximum of $1,500; the minimum period of residence is two weeks, and preference is given to researchers who are interested in collaborating informally for a day or two with Bakken staff during their research visit. Research travel grants are awarded up to a maximum of $500 (domestic) and $750 (foreign); the minimum period of residence is one week. Applications are due March 4th, 2013.

Preservation Assistance Grants help small and mid-sized institutions-such as libraries, museums, historical societies, archival repositories, cultural organizations, town and county records offices, and colleges and universities-improve their ability to preserve and care for their significant humanities collections. These may include special collections of books and journals, archives and manuscripts, prints and photographs, moving images, sound recordings, architectural and cartographic records, decorative and fine art objects, textiles, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, furniture, historical objects, and digital materials.
