In 2013, the William Nelson Cromwell Foundation will make available of a number of fellowship awards intended to support research and writing in American legal history. The number of awards to be made, and their amounts, is at the discretion of the Foundation. In the past four years, the trustees of the Foundation have made three to five awards, in amounts up to $5,000. Preference is given to scholars at the early stages of their careers. The Committee for Research fellowships and Awards of the American Society for Legal History (ASLH) reviews the applications and makes recommendations to the Foundation.

The Reynolds Associates, in conjunction with the Historical Collections (HC) unit of the Lister Hill Library, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), are pleased to announce the availability of short-term awards of up to $1,000 to individual researchers studying one or more aspects of the history of the health sciences during the 2015 calendar year. Intended to support research using the HC unit as a historical resource, the fellowship requires the on-site use of at least one of the unit's three components, which are the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, Reynolds Historical Library and UAB Archives.

Community colleges are a vital component of the higher education ecosystem and of the academic humanities in particular. Mellon/ACLS Community College Faculty Fellowships are tailored to the circumstances of humanities and social science faculty who teach at two-year institutions and are intended to support their research ambitions. ACLS invites applications for the inaugural competition of the program this fall. These Fellowships are made possible by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) is offering semester-long sabbaticals for the study, research, and teaching of classical liberal ideas including private property, free speech, individual rights, open markets and other precepts. Sabbatical fellowships will be offered in the 2020-2021 academic years, and sabbaticals must be taken during the designated periods. Both tenured and tenure track may apply. IHS traditionally works with academics in the fields of economics, political science, philosophy, history, and law, however scholars in other disciplines are welcome to apply.  fellowships will be given at two levels: $50,000 and $85,000. Awards are not limited to tenured faculty. Faculty at any stage of their career may apply. Academics looking to complete book projects or articles as part of a tenure application or promotion dossier are especially encouraged to apply.

We welcome applications from a broad range of fields and perspectives. The strength of our fellowship program is its diversity. The following areas are of particular interest: - Radcliffe supports engaged scholarship. We welcome applications from scholars, artists, and practitioners proposing innovative work that confronts pressing social and policy issues and seeking to engage audiences beyond academia. - We welcome proposals relevant to the Institute's focus areas, which include: * Law, education, and justice * Youth leadership and civic engagement * Legacies of slavery  - Reflecting Radcliffe's unique history and institutional legacy, we welcome proposals that focus on women, gender, and society or draw on the Schlesinger Library's rich collections.  - Interdisciplinary exchange is a hallmark of the Radcliffe fellowship, and we welcome proposals that take advantage of our uniquely diverse intellectual community by engaging with concepts and ideas that cross disciplinary boundaries.

The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship in the History of Medicine and Public Health supports research using New York Academy of Medicine library resources for scholarly study of the history of medicine and public health with an emphasis on visual culture. It is intended specifically for a scholar in residence at the NYAM Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health. Preference will be given to applications which focus on the use of visual materials held in the NYAM collections and elsewhere. The Helfand Fellow is expected to spend at least four weeks in New York City, working at The New York Academy of Medicine. Fellows are required to present a seminar at NYAM, and to submit a final report on work done at the NYAM Library by the end of the award period.

The Paul Klemperer Fellowship in the History of Medicine supports research using New York Academy of Medicine library resources for scholarly study of the history of medicine. It is intended specifically for a scholar in residence at the NYAM Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health. The Klemperer Fellow is expected to spend at least four weeks in New York City, working at The New York Academy of Medicine. Fellows are required to present a seminar at NYAM, and to submit a final report on work done at the NYAM Library by the end of the award period.

The Fellowship Program for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is a joint activity of the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Awards support research on modern Japanese society and political economy, Japan's international relations, and U.S.-Japan relations. The program encourages innovative research that puts these subjects in wider regional and global contexts and is comparative and contemporary in nature. Research should contribute to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of issues of concern to Japan and the United States. Appropriate disciplines for the research include anthropology, economics, geography, history, international relations, linguistics, political science, psychology, public administration, and sociology. Awards usually result in articles, monographs, books, digital materials, archaeological site reports, translations, editions, or other scholarly resources.

Each year the Flaherty offers fellowships to graduate students and emerging and mid-career filmmakers and media professionals. The fellowship program is led by an academic who has attended previous Flaherty Seminars and is designed to further your knowledge of cinema through participation in an array of unique activities. Besides interacting with the group at large, Flaherty fellows take part in private meetings and discussions with the featured artists and other special guests in attendance, including programmers, writers, and academics and participate in a mentorship program. The program is rigorous and rewarding; Fellows arrive on campus a day before the Seminar begins to learn about the history of the Seminar, discuss pre-assigned readings relating to the theme, and watch and discuss each other's films, by way of an informal Fellows' film screening. Fellows will be able to return home with creative inspiration, experiences and connections, which will aid them in furthering their own careers and artistic endeavors.

The Coordinating Council for Women in History and the Berkshire Conference of Women's History Graduate Student Fellowship is a $1000 award to a graduate student completing a dissertation in a history department. The award is intended to support either a crucial stage of research or the final year of writing. The applicant must be a CCWH member; must be a graduate student in a history department in a U.S. institution; must have passed to A.B.D. status by the time of application; may specialize in any field of history; may hold this award and others simultaneously; and need not attend the award ceremony to receive the award. Through a generous bequest from Friedrich and Lieselotte Solmsen, the Institute offers four to five external Solmsen Fellowships each year to scholars outside UW-Madison working on literary and historical studies of the European Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance periods up to about 1700. Fellows must be in residence throughout the academic year (except for short research trips) and may extend their residency through the following summer on a non-stipendary basis. Fellows are expected to present their work at an Institute seminar and participate in the weekly seminars. Applicants must be in possession of the doctorate at the time of application. The award provides a stipend of $50,000, office space, support services, and access to all university facilities.

Robert M. Kingdon, a distinguished historian of early modern Europe, generously donated funds for one to two external Kingdon Fellowships year to scholars outside UW-Madison scholarly research in historical, literary, and philosophical studies of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition and its role in society from antiquity to the present. Projects may focus on any period from antiquity to the present, on any part of the world, and in any field(s) in the humanities; can range widely or focus on a particular issue; and can explore various forms of Jewish and/or Christian traditions; the interaction of one or both of these religious traditions with other religious traditions; and/or the relationship of one or both of these religious traditions to other aspects of society such as power, politics, culture, experience, and creativity.

These fellowships support long-term, unusually ambitious projects in the humanities and related social sciences. The ultimate goal of the project should be a major piece of scholarly work by the applicant. ACLS does not fund creative work (e.g., novels or films), textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects.

The Foundation for the History of Women in Medicine will provide one $5000 grant to support travel, lodging, and incidental expenses for a flexible research period between July 1st 2014 - June 30th 2015. Foundation Fellowships are offered for research related to the history of women to be conducted at the Center for the History of Medicine at the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine. Preference will be given to projects that deal specifically with women physicians or other health workers or medical scientists, but proposals dealing with the history of women's health issues may also be considered.

The Mary Baker Eddy Library awards fellowships to academic scholars and independent researchers for research in its collections, which center on the papers of Mary Baker Eddy and records documenting the history of the Christian Science movement. Relevant areas of research include the fields of women's history, spirituality and health, religious studies, nineteenth-century history, cultural and social history, architecture, and journalism (see collections for more information).

The Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF), an independent research library in Philadelphia, invites applications for fellowships. Short-term fellows are particularly meant to use the collections, while long-term fellows' work must help to support the mission of the institution and fit with collections more generally. The research collections at CHF range chronologically from the fifteenth century to the present and include 6,000 rare books, significant archival holdings, thousands of images, and a large artifact and fine arts collection, supported by over 100,000 reference volumes and journals. Within the collections there are many areas of special strength, including: alchemy, mining & metallurgy, dyeing and bleaching, balneology, gunpowder and pyrotechnics, gas-lighting, books of secrets, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, food chemistry, and pharmaceuticals.

To promote the interpretation of Virginia history and access to its collections, the Virginia Historical Society, funded by a matching grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and gifts from individuals, offers research fellowships of up to three weeks a year. For the purpose of this program, a week is defined as five days in the VHS library, which is open 10-5, Monday through Saturday.

The American Philosophical Society Library offers short-term residential fellowships for conducting research in its collections. We are a leading international center for research in the history of American science and technology and its European roots, as well as early American history and culture.

To support the study of southern history and promote the use of the collections housed at the University of Alabama, the Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South and the University of Alabama Libraries will offer a total of eight fellowships in the amount of $500 each for researchers whose projects entail work to be conducted in southern history or southern studies at the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library (http://www.lib.ua.edu/libraries/hoole/), the A.S. Williams III Americana Collection (http://www.lib.ua.edu/williamscollection), or in other University of Alabama collections.
