The Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Basel awards one doctoral scholarship in the fields of Modern Jewish History, Jewish Literature, Modern Jewish Intellectual History, or Jewish Cultural History per December 1st 2013 or by agreement. The award is specifically aimed at female applicants. Eligibility criteria: - an excellent higher university degree that qualifies for doctoral studies in Jewish Studies at the University of Basel - willingness to work at the Centre for Jewish Studies (apart from possible trips to archives etc.) - willingness to perform organisational and other tasks as part of the Centre team, possibly a teaching assignment Suggestions for a dissertation topic can be submitted along with the application but are not mandatory. Possible topics can also be discussed with the Centre administration if the scholarship is awarded to the applicant. A possible topic could be a project within the context of the intended collaboration of the Centre of Jewish Studies with the archive of the National Library of Israel. The scholarship will be awarded for 36 months and amounts to CHF 50'000 p.a. After 18 months of the intended funding period an interim report by the Centre administration on the status of the project will decide about the continued funding for the remaining duration of the stipend.

The Huntington is an independent research center with extensive holdings in British and American history, literature, art history, and the history of science and medicine, with the collections ranging chronologically from the eleventh century to the present. The Huntington will award to scholars over one hundred fellowships for the academic year 2014-2015. These fellowships derive from a variety of funding sources and have different terms. Recipients of all fellowships are expected to be in continuous residence at the Huntington and to participate in and make a contribution to its intellectual life. NEH FELLOWSHIPS offer stipends of up to $50,000 for nine to twelve months. BARBARA THOM POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS are intended to support a non-tenured faculty member who is revising a manuscript for publication, carrying a stipend of $50,000 for nine to twelve months. THE MELLON FELLOWSHIP is for nine to twelve months with a stipend of $50,000. THE DANA AND DAVID DORNSIFE FELLOWSHIP is for nine to twelve months with a stipend of $50,000. HUNTINGTON RESEARCH AWARDS are for one to five months and carry monthly stipends of $3,000. TRAVEL GRANTS AND EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIPS FOR STUDY IN GREAT BRITAIN are offered to support U.S.-based scholars in any of the fields in which the Huntington collections are strong and where the research will be carried out in Great Britain. We also offer exchange fellowships with Corpus Christi College, Linacre College, and Lincoln College, Oxford. THE DIBNER PROGRAM IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE offers historians of science and technology the opportunity to study in the Burndy Library and to work in the other resources for the history of science and technology at the Huntington. Both long- and short-term fellowships are available. The deadline for submitting an application is November 15, 2013. (Please note this is an earlier deadline than in past years.)

The Programme's objectives are achieved principally by awarding grants to applicants to locate relevant endangered archival collections, where possible to arrange their transfer to a suitable local archival home, and to deposit copies with local institutions and the British Library. Pilot projects are particularly welcomed, to investigate the survival of archival collections on a particular subject, in a discrete region, or in a specific format, and the feasibility of their recovery. To be considered for funding under the Programme, the archival material should relate to a 'pre-modern' period of a society's history. There is no prescriptive definition of this, but it may typically mean, for instance, any period before industrialisation. The relevant time period will therefore vary according to the society. For the purposes of the Programme, the term 'archival material' is interpreted widely to include rare printed books, newspapers and periodicals, audio and audio-visual materials, photographs and manuscripts.

The Arthur L. Norberg Travel Fund provides short-term grants-in-aid to help scholars with travel expenses to use archival collections at the Charles Babbage Institute.  Each year we plan to award two or more $750 grants. The Charles Babbage Institute (CBI) is an internationally recognized research center and archives focused on the history of information technology.  CBI conducts major research projects; publishes books and articles; and collects, processes, and provides open public access to the most diverse and extensive collection of archival materials on computing, software, and networking in the world.  CBI collections include the records of corporations, technical and trade associations, personal papers, industry publications, oral histories, photographs, film/video, and an extensive reference library.  The Norberg Travel Fund is named for CBI's founding director, Arthur L. Norberg, and is funded by generous gifts from his friends and colleagues.

The Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry at the Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF), an independent research library in Philadelphia, invites applications for fellowships. Short-term fellows are particularly meant to use the collections, while long-term fellows' work must help to support the mission of the institution and fit with collections more generally. The research collections at CHF range chronologically from the fifteenth century to the present and include 6,000 rare books, significant archival holdings, thousands of images, and a large artifact and fine arts collection, supported by over 100,000 reference volumes and journals. Within the collections there are many areas of special strength, including: alchemy, mining & metallurgy, dyeing and bleaching, balneology, gunpowder and pyrotechnics, gas-lighting, books of secrets, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry, food chemistry, and pharmaceuticals.

To promote the interpretation of Virginia history and access to its collections, the Virginia Historical Society, funded by a matching grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and gifts from individuals, offers research fellowships of up to three weeks a year. For the purpose of this program, a week is defined as five days in the VHS library, which is open 10-5, Monday through Saturday.

The Cummins Grant provides a stipend of $10,000 to support short-term historical research using Special Collections at GW's Jacob Burns Law Library, which is noted for its continental historical legal collections, especially its French Collection. Special Collections also is distinguished by its holdings in Roman and canon law, church-state relations, international law, and its many incunabula. The grant is awarded to one doctoral, LLM, or SJD candidate; postdoctoral researcher; faculty member; or independent scholar. Candidates may come from a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to, law, history, religion, philosophy, or bibliography.

The Myer and Rosaline Feinstein Center for American Jewish History announces a new fellowship, the Frederic Fox Memorial Summer Fellowship, to support pre- and post-doctoral researchers' use of the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collections in the Special Collections Research Center, Temple University Libraries. While the grant is for research that primarily uses the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collections, applicants are encouraged to explore other Temple University resources in the Special Collections Research Center as well. Grantees are required to spend a minimum of one month at the SCRC facility over the course of the year.  Graduate students or recent Ph.D. graduates are eligible to apply for a grant of $2,000.  Smaller grants may also be awarded to help defray research expenses.

The Portage Route Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation invites applications from student scholars to its Scholar-In-Residence fellowship program designed to encourage use of the William P. Sherman Library and Archives in Great Falls, Montana. A $3000 stipend will be granted to a student researcher who articulates a research topic suitable for extensive use of this special collection. The stipend is meant to defray expenses incurred in traveling to, and residing in, Great Falls, MT for three to four weeks. The Portage Route Chapter will assist the Scholar in finding cost-effective lodging. Desk space and internet connection will be provided by the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. Research is expected to focus upon at least one of the following (or similar) areas:  Jefferson's Corps of Discovery; the native peoples the Expedition met along their journey; efforts to establish and protect the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail; work of Lewis and Clark entities connecting the general public to the National Historic Trail through interpretation; commemoration of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial, 2003 - 2006; and the organizational history of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation - about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. An applicant's proposal should specifically address its relevance to the unique resources found in the Sherman Library's collections.

The objective of this Agreement is to facilitate the completion of a Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation (LCTHF) Administrative History. LCTHF is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that commemorates the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail (LECL). This will provide an Administrative History of the LCTHF for public awareness and knowledge of the inception and continued public commemoration of the Lewis and Clark NHT. It will further enhance public understanding of the vital role of partnerships and volunteer organizations in the advocacy for, and enhancement of, national historic trails. RECIPIENT AGREES TO: 1. Conduct historical research utilizing the LCTHF's William P. Sherman Library and Archives, other repositories, and materials collected for the Lewis and Clark NHT Administrative History. 2. Conduct oral history interviews with past and present board members, and others involved with the LCTHF. 3. Submit draft outline that includes descriptions of each chapter and sufficiently illustrates the complete range of topics, themes, and chronological periods. 4. Submit all drafts for NPS review and consultation, up to and including the final draft prior to publication. 5. Produce and publish the final LCTHF administrative history on the organizations website. 6. Provide to NPS and electronic copy of the final LCTHF administrative history.

20th Century Japan Research Award for 2017-2018 The Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies and the University of Maryland Libraries invite applications for two $1,500 grants to support research in the library's Gordon W. Prange Collection and East Asia Collection on topics related to the period of the Allied Occupation of Japan and its aftermath, 1945-1960. Holders of a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree are eligible to apply, as are graduate students who have completed all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation. The competition is open to scholars in all parts of the world and from any discipline, but historical topics are preferred. University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students may not apply. More information can be found on the Prange Collection website. The application deadline is November 17, 2017. The grant must be used by October 26, 2018. Grant funds will be disbursed in the form of reimbursement for travel, lodging, meals, reproductions, and related research expenses. Such costs as computers or software are not eligible.

Working in conjunction with the U.S. Army, the Army Heritage Center Foundation seeks to leverage the efforts of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, an educational resource, museum, library, and archive dedicated to safeguarding and making available to the public the tangible materials of soldiers during their time of service. To that end, the foundation is currently accepting applications for the Robert L. and Robert C. Ruth Fellowship program. Through the program, one graduate student will receive a research fellowship of $1,500 to engage in a three-week summer research program at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania Research topics need not be limited to military history and can include any subject with the potential to be supported by the vast material collection available at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center. Potential candidates must identify the resources they intend to use during their period of study and are encouraged to consult the online catalog.

Each year, the American Historical Association awards several research grants with the aim of advancing the study and exploration of history in a diverse number of subject areas. All grants are awarded in June and may be used anytime in the subsequent 15 months for expenses related to furthering research in progress. Grants may be used for travel to a library or archive; microfilming, photography, or photocopying; borrowing or access fees; and similar research expenses-a list of purposes that is meant to be merely illustrative, not exhaustive (other expenses, such as child care, can be included). Applications for the Cushwa Center's five research funding programs are due December 31, 2018.  Grants and awards fund research in repositories at the University of Notre Dame and beyond.  Research Travel Grants assist scholars visiting the Notre Dame Archives and Hesburgh Libraries.  Peter R. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants support research in Roman archives for projects on U.S. Catholic history.  Mother Theodore Guerin Research Travel Grants support research focused on Catholic women in modern history.  Hesburgh Research Travel Grants support projects using the Theodore M. Hesburgh Papers and related collections at the Notre Dame Archives.  Hibernian Research Awards provide travel funds for the scholarly study of Irish and Irish American history.  

Special Collections at Smith College offer four fellowships. The Sophia Smith Collection and the Smith College Archives offer the Margaret Storrs Grierson, Friends of the Smith College Libraries, and Carel B. Germain Fellowships awarded in an annual competition. Scholars will hold awards of $2,500, intended to support research visits of four to six weeks.  One Mortimer Fellowship of $2,500 is awarded annually for research in the rare book collection.

The Oberlin College Archives established the Frederick B. Artz Summer Research Grants Program in 1990. This research program, which is made possible by a grant from the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization, is intended to encourage and facilitate the publication of scholarly, humanistic studies based on archival and special collections sources at Oberlin College, with special emphasis on the history of the institution, Oberlin Community and liberal arts education. Studies of a local nature involving the resources of both archival and special collections departments are especially encouraged.Researchers will be selected on the quality and significance of their research proposal, its relationship to the holdings of the Oberlin College Archives and Oberlin College Library, and on the potential for publication.

New York University's Center for the United States and the Cold War announces the Agnese N. Haury fellowships and travel grants for 2018-2019. The Center for the United States and the Cold War at NYU's Tamiment Library supports research on the Cold War, especially on the ways in which this ideological and geopolitical conflict with the Soviet Union affected American politics, culture, and society. We will be offering a dissertation fellowship and several travel grants to scholars who are interested in using Tamiment's holdings to further their research.

The National Endowment for the Humanities offers the Dialogues on the Experience of War program as part of its current initiative, Standing Together: The Humanities and the Experience of War. The program supports the study and discussion of important humanities sources about war, in the belief that these sources can help U.S. military veterans and others think more deeply about the issues raised by war and military service. Although the program is primarily designed to reach military veterans, men and women in active service, military families, and interested members of the public may also participate. The program awards grants of up to $100,000 that will support * the convening of at least two discussion programs for no fewer than fifteen participants; and * the creation of a preparatory program to recruit and train program discussion leaders (NEH Discussion Leaders). Discussion programs may take place on college and university campuses, in veterans' centers, at public libraries and museums, and at other community venues.

Research Travel Grants assist scholars who wish to use the University of Notre Dame's archival collections in Catholic Americana at the Hesburgh Libraries. D'Agostino Research Travel Grants support research in Roman archives for projects on U.S. Catholic history. Hesburgh Research Travel Grants provide funds for scholars to research primary source materials relating to the life and work of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987. Hibernian Research Awards support the scholarly study of Irish American history.
